ÖDE · DRIFTING-8 · K-I UNMARKED (Värn's records, never updated) · Scalelist: — (her world is uncounted). Her Ledger page went blank with Värn, so the board still thinks she's a farm girl with no sin.

Look

  • Build & height: 1.68 m, strong from farm work: broad hands, square shoulders, a steady planted stance like a fence post.
  • Face: square, sunburned across the nose, freckled, with a straight brow and a stubborn chin. She has a small white scar through one eyebrow from a scythe she was too young to hold.
  • Hair: a sun-bleached braid, straw-coloured, as thick as a rope, tied with baling twine.
  • Eyes: hazel-green, the colour of barley before it ripens. When she unfolds Värn, a summer sky shows in them.
  • Skin & sin-mark: brown from the sun, dirt under her nails that never quite washes out. Greed, emerald, decide what you value. The names of everyone she remembers from Värn are written in emerald script up her palms and forearms, like barley stalks. There are 112 at her debut. Each forgotten name fades from her skin. The reader can count them.
  • Clothing, layer by layer: a homespun linen shirt, sleeves rolled to show the names · a sleeveless wool jerkin · a long work-skirt hitched up into her belt · heavy boots caked in earth · a straw hat on a cord down her back.
  • Signature item: the scythe on her back: an old farm scythe with a worn ash-wood snath, her grandmother's. And at her ankles, grass grows out of thin air wherever she stands.
  • Movement: unhurried and rhythmic, like someone mowing a field. She fights like that too: wide, even sweeps.
  • Voice: plain, warm and country-slow, with blunt words and long silences. Her balloons are simple, with a faint wheat-ear curl at the tail.
  • Variant looks: Unfolding (a whole sunlit world blooming around her in the dark: houses, sky, people waving). After the hour (kneeling in her one acre, staring at her arm as a name fades). Saga VI.

Power

She remembers her world so hard that it comes back around her. For one hour she can unfold the lost world of Värn: its houses, its sky, its fields, its harbour, and its people, who fight beside her as memories that bleed and laugh like the living.

  • Radius: about a mile: as far as she knew it. Her village, the fields, the harbour, the sky above them.
  • Its people: everyone she remembers (112 at her debut). They know her; they argue; they have their own skills (the smith, the harbour-master, her brother with his slingshot).
  • Then the hour ends, and Värn folds back into one acre of barley.
  • The Värn rule (home field): memory holds the ground together. The last field exists because she remembers it.
  • What it can't do: last longer than an hour; bring back anyone she never knew; touch the Null. Her field isn't a weapon against it. It is held together by love, one of the five things the Null can't uncount.

HADOM, the heartbeat

  • Tempo: 30.
  • Home tempo: Värn, her one acre.
  • Heartbeat technique: THE REMEMBERED BEAT. Without unfolding all of Värn, she remembers one person so completely that they step out of thin air beside her for one heartbeat: one scythe-swing from her grandmother, one hug from her brother, one bark from Bonde. No one else summons a whole person from memory for a single beat.
  • Burn cost: to keep their memories sharp she spends her own. Her own childhood is going first. Some day she'll remember everyone in Värn but herself.

The price

Every hour she unfolds Värn, she forgets one person from it forever, and that person stops coming back. Her world gets emptier each time she saves anyone with it. She has to choose who goes. The reader watches the names fade from her arms. (The price takes people, so Bonde, the dog, never fades.)

Weaknesses

  • The hour runs out. Outlast her and she's a farm girl with a scythe.
  • The Gleaners: scavengers who strip the corpses of dying islands. They want her acre for its last good soil. Their chief, Mother Skrap, wears a coat sewn from a hundred dead islands' flags.
  • The Null can't eat what she loves, but it can eat everything around it.
  • Mercy: every life she saves costs her a name. Bad people know it, and make her choose.
  • Her dark mirror (Envy VI): a woman who builds a home by stealing other places, where Öde builds one by keeping hers.

Gear & companions

  • Her grandmother's scythe.
  • The remembered villagers of Värn: Farmor Sigrun, her grandmother, who taught her to mow and to swear; Halm, her little brother, nine for ever, with a slingshot; and Bonde, a shaggy black-and-white farm dog who barks at everything.
  • The one acre of barley, floating in the dark, and the scarecrow in its middle, which wears her grandfather's hat.

How they fight

A harvest. She opens with the Scythe-Sweep and holds her ground with Grass-Step. When it's desperate, she unfolds Värn and a whole village charges with her. She finishes by folding it all back up, alone in her acre, looking at her arm. Team combos: Öde + Drämmen: he drags a half-taken thing back, she remembers it whole. Öde + Iskall: in Iskall's lamp, Värn's people see their own happiest moments and fight like the living. Öde + Kvar: the one who always survives and the one who remembers. He teaches her the Roll-Call.

Personality

  • Wants: to keep everyone. Every name.
  • Fears: the hour when she has to choose between her grandmother and a stranger.
  • Contradiction: her power saves the living by losing the dead, and she'd make the trade every time, which is what frightens her about herself.
  • Humour: dry farm humour. "Lovely ship. Where's the soil?"
  • Habits: reads the names on her arms every morning, aloud; plants something wherever the ship docks.
  • Alone: lies in her acre, looking up at nothing, and tells the dark about everyone in Värn.

Relationships

  • Kvar: the one who always survives. He bonds with her more than with anyone. "Remembering isn't the same as carrying." "It is for me."
  • Ysel and Drämmen: two other half-taken people. She remembers Ysel whole (Saga IV, Arc 6), and asks every one of Drämmen's drippings for a name.
  • Vigolas: both of them lose people to their own power. He learns all 112 names off her arms, so there will always be someone left who remembers. The crew follows.
  • Kompis + Mingus: Mingus plays with Bonde: a living dog and a remembered one, chasing each other through barley for an hour. When the hour ends, Mingus sits in the empty acre and waits for the next one.
  • Rougeina: two women who remember people nobody else does. They understand each other without speaking.
  • Isa: her bunkmate. Two girls carrying worlds that stopped.
  • Levla: two Greeds. He sells memories; she'd die before losing one. She hates him; he can't stop thinking about her.
  • Smurjan: she asks each of the seventeen voices its name, and adds them to her arm, in a different ink.
Story so far
  • V: she plants barley on every island the Marka touches.
  • VI · The Third Sign: the Harvest Hour. The last name fades: her grandmother. Then Fenna, the First Witness, gives the memory back, because being witnessed brings it home. At the Ascension, Öde gets her grandmother back.
