Saga I

The Satchel

Chapters 1–28
Saga I recap

Vigolas wakes in his eighth life. Fenna has just read him his entry ("Edited. Seven times. Not by me.") and sent him back: "Someone is going to be very upset that you exist."

Arc 1 · The Heist (1–8).

  • The crew forms. Vigolas, the pirate whose ∞−1 on the board nobody can rank, steals a satchel. Kompis, the Order's child-agent with Mingus at his heel, defects and chooses him. Rougeina and Trollmage join, and Ysel is uncounted.
  • Orm tries to take Mingus. Mingus = the Sabre Lion.
  • Loss: Drekk's boat, the Kettle, burns and sinks in the fjord.

Arc 2 · The Trinity (9–16).

  • Troll country. Stranded in troll country, the crew are hunted by the Trinity (Smurjan, Kali and Bakasura) and by Sigvat the Cleaner.
  • Loss: Marka holds Bakasura's jaws open in the silent dawn so the children can escape. She winks and is eaten, and lives on as a voice inside Smurjan, who joins the crew.
  • Mingus = the Manticore, when the camp is attacked.

Arc 3 · Baldr (17–28).

  • Glasheim and the Protocol Hall. Kompis's old network turns on him.
  • Loss: Gate City burns.

  • The First Sign: Torva's horn is heard in every realm, and Vigolas's entry is edited an eighth time.
  • Mingus = the Griffin, catching the falling crew.

Arc 1 · Fyren (231–242).

  • The Up-Again crew debuts: Krydog, Flexsnus, Roffe, Jeppson, Perne, Emma, Tihi and Daniel. They start as rivals and soon become friends.

  • Krydog vs Vigolas I ends in a draw, with a fish and a ship's bell.

  • Krydog vs Vigolas II ends in a draw: "Getting up was never a feeling. It's a habit."
  • Loss: the seventh lamp. It climbs into the sky and becomes the Deep's first north star.

Arc 4 · The Splinterlands (264–275).

Arc 6 · The Burn (288–299).

  • Aska in white-hot chains on Ferdinand's highest branch, and Ivo the Kindler (Gluttony II).

Saga VI

The Third Sign

Chapters 331–420
Saga VI recap

The war that ends the first era, but not the story.

Arc 1 · The Bark (331–340).

  • Mingus barks: the Third Sign, heard in every realm. The Null pauses.
  • The Arbiter sits in the Twelfth chair. Runa's GATHER, and Torva's horn: THE CONVERGENCE. ONE MATCH.
  • Stage IV: dreams go white and mirrors show empty rooms.
  • Hallbard sleeps for one night while Krydog keeps the lamp. Vaka wakes.
  • Loss: the Upp Igen's figurehead, the fist. Jeppson carves a new one with a scar on the knuckle.

Arc 2 · The Cut (341–350).

  • Vägskälet and the Twelfth Road: ANYONE MAY WALK IT.
  • Dolk, the knife-child, and Ferdinand's oldest wound at the Void-II Seal. The Menders want to sew it shut.
  • Daniel: "A bond can be appealed. A cut can't."
  • Loss: Dolk's healing. He cuts the one healed inch open again himself. Dolk lives.
  • Mingus = the Sabre Lion.

Arc 3 · The Cabin (351–360).

  • The completion-hunters touch anything in progress and finish it. They come to finish Kompis's cabin in Heartbeat.
  • Nagel, the iron man in the lintel, guards the door.
  • ALTERNATE costs Kompis's name for one chapter. Nagel pins it back.
  • Loss: Kompis's dream of the cabin. He can never dream it himself again.
  • Mingus = the Manticore.

Arc 4 · The Gathering (361–370).

  • Every ally answers. Krydog is elected captain of captains: "Anybody goes down, somebody picks them up."
  • The breakthrough: Svala's Long Line cuts the Great Chain, Levla and Pyssel come in a borrowed boat, Iskall's lamp-bearers light the night, and Tyngd lifts.
  • Loss: Eken's memory. He releases Three Thousand Years and forgets everything. The mice give him a note: EKEN.

Arc 5 · The Bridge of Every Ship (371–380).

  • The Bridge: Jeppson draws a mile-long bridge up the trunk, with a plank from every ship. Orm tries to turn the alliance and slides off Roffe's table.
  • The Arbiter's first ending, a full stop the size of an island, floors the whole fleet in the last inch of a fall. Mingus = the Cave-Bear holds it.
  • The Rivet Beat: "That's not a fleet. That's a deck. It's all one ship." Flisa's Barkskin holds the joints, and she shrinks to 0.90 m.
  • Krydog: "It's not an ending! It's a fall! Let it land! — And get up!" A hundred worlds get up.
  • Loss: Njord's tide-rod. Six knots let loose, he goes deaf, and the Order's last fleet scatters: "I knew. And I stopped it."
  • The Upp Igen sinks a sixth time, holding the first span.
  • Emma's Great Ring is tied from a rope from every ship.
  • Everyone cooks for Roffe: "…Full."
  • The stands of the dead fill, and the five step down: THE MATCH IS CALLED.

Arc 6 · The Arena (381–390).

  • The five stand. The Arbiter is seen whole: a cathedral of frozen last moments.
  • The First Movement: they refuse to kill each other.
  • Rule Five: the dead are called down, and Vigolas carries Hild over the rope.
  • Orka binds the living and the dead, and loses her voice for a year.
  • Perne's true sight: under the Arbiter are Kompis and Rougeina, still in the middle of their old match. She loses her left eye.
  • Loss: Ögar's sight. Her last sight is Mingus asleep in the sun.
  • The hook: Jorvand: "Hello, boy. I told you I'd be one."

Arc 7 · The Null Wakes (391–400).

  • The Null comes through Jorvand. Vigolas's commands aren't received.
  • Mingus's bark lands. The Quoka is spoken five ways.
  • The allies' war on the Null: Isa's Statue Vigil (3 min 40 s), Vider and Lärka's Silence, Niva's Seventh Stake, Aska's Sixty for Everyone, Hallbard's Fixed Light, and Mörda's Long Night, which means she can never sleep again.
  • Loss: Kvar falls in his Last Watch.
  • Mingus = the Sun-Wolf, the second time.
  • The Codices wake. Trollmage's macro gives the Null a heartbeat and a number: #0.

Arc 8 · Five and One (401–410).

  • "We're the same person." The bark is heard a second time. Fenna is already seated, and the First Count is revealed: Mingus is the beat, and Fenna is the one who hears it. She witnesses the five as one.
  • The Arbiter's last THE END. Flexsnus bends Rule Seven ("By a crew… Ours.") and his Tuesday notch is gone.
  • Daniel appeals the Arena. The crew hold up his arm, Krydog falls so Daniel's heel lands on Emma's line, and Fenna speaks in a balloon left empty for you.
  • Tihi laughs: "AGAIN!" Daniel laughs for the first time, is ruled HEARD, and his right hand turns grey. The Arbiter shrinks to an empty balloon: the Free Arena.
  • The salvos:
    • COMPACT takes the memory that the Camilla's sails were red.
    • Trollmage's morning: a sunrise inside the Null.
    • The Trinity sings.
    • Kompis holds the Null's one thread, and Rougeina erases it.
    • The Null forgets why it came. It was only homesick.
  • Loss: Jorvand. He takes Vigolas's hand ("Here—"), goes through the Cut into Void-II and sits with the sleeping Null, witnessed.
  • The dreams merge: "Getting up isn't an order. It's an offer." Krydog lies down on purpose: "Sleep. I'll stand."

Arc 9 · The Ascension (411–420).

  • Krydog sleeps: eleven days and an afternoon, with Vigolas guarding the door.
  • Hjalmar gets the message: "It stopped stinging."
  • The Harvest Hour: Öde gives Farmor Sigrun as the price, and Fenna gives her back. Fenna forgets Sigrun.
  • Röta's Orchard: the consumed get bodies, and Marka comes back: "…Huh. Bright out here." Old Torbjörn is gone for ever.
  • The Upp Igen is raised again, with the sixth band: a plank from every ship.
  • The five sit down in five identical cork chairs in their realms, and where they sit, Ferdinand stops bleeding.
  • Gifts and promises: Dolk gets his Quoka. Roffe sets out a sixth bowl, and a new page of the Ledger begins with a blank first line.
  • The end: Ferdinand grows a new branch. Mingus barks once, gently, and Njord can hear again.
  • "Right. Where next?" · END OF SAGA VI.

Prices that stand after the first era:

  • Daniel's grey hand. Flexsnus fixed at #10,000. Emma's white braid and eyelashes.
  • Ögar blind. Perne one-eyed. Orka voiceless for a year. Mörda sleepless. Isa's heart scar. Flisa 0.90 m. Eken's memory.
  • Kvar dead.
  • Fenna doesn't remember Sigrun. Vigolas knows neither his first word nor the colour of the sails. Rougeina's eight are gone.

HADOM Quoka. ツ
