Chapter 150
The Marka turns toward a faint golden glow on the horizon: Skatt, the market world. The Compass in Vigolas's hand points straight at it.
The crew prepares: Drekk at the wheel in his bell-rope mask, Kompis cleaning four guns, Rougeina sharpening eight blades, Smurjan meditating with three shadows side by side, Kali eating, Trollmage asleep with the Gluttony Codex on his chest and the crown under his head as a pillow.
From three directions at once, sails. Black skiffs of Shelf-Wolves. A white-hulled ship of Order remnants, Sentinels without collars who still serve the four Architects. And a gaudy bounty-ship of Codex-hunters with the Scalelist's new CODEX column painted on its sail.
grinning, almost relieved.
eyes gold, seeing the crew's threads, all six tied, glowing, thick as rope.
Vigolas, the Minus One: "I give up looking back", and lightning fists in every direction at once.
Kompis, the Four-Gun Volley plus Shared Beat lent to all of them: Ivar roars, Lilla Ulv bounces, Fru Gnista bursts gold over the Order ship, Tyst silently cuts the Wolves' sail-ropes.
Rougeina, Moth-Swap from a gull to the Codex-hunters' deck, eight silver-rose blades.
Smurjan, the Triple Pulse: three strikes, three ships, one beat.
Trollmage, the Banked Beat, three days of sleep in one beat: MACRO : CALM SEA = THEIRS. Every enemy ship's sails go slack.
Kali borrows Drekk's sin (lent), and Drekk spins the wheel; the Marka slides between all three enemy ships.
Mingus barks once.
One heartbeat. Three becalmed ships, their sails cut and their decks full of groaning raiders.
The Marka sails on through the gap, untouched. Behind her, three enemy ships sit dead in a calm sea.
crashing back to sleep, mumbling.
Narration-free; the art tells it:
The Council Hall: four Architects in a ring of twelve chairs, eight dark. The glass floor dark. Nobody is steering.
The Gate Yard: frames rusted, every gate in every realm black.
A Sentinel barracks: collars in a pile of white rust, freed soldiers learning to hold their own sins.
Gate City's surf: the reborn walking out of the waves into their own bodies again, since Routing broke.
A city square: a Scalelist board with two new columns, THE DEAD and CODEX, names changing faster than the stone can carve them.
The sky: seventy comets of Codex-light long since landed, and on islands everywhere small new lights of power flickering on.
The whole map of the world, seen from high above the Current: nine realms hanging like fruit on the great dark shape of Ferdinand, the cork-oak; the starlight sea of the Current between them; islands drifting like lanterns. And everywhere, on every realm and every island, lights: thousands and thousands of small coloured lights. Woken sins, freed Sentinels, seventy Codices, souls back in their own bodies. A world glittering with power nobody assigned, in glorious, frightening freedom.
At the very bottom, tiny, a single bark ship with a bell at its bow, sailing toward a golden coin of a planet.
The crew lies on blankets under the stars, all of them, closer together than ever, tied. Nobody on watch except Mingus, who has decided he is the watch.
on his back, the Compass on his chest pointing toward Skatt.
on her side, her short ragged hair, a hand over her heart.
lying with his head on Mingus.
Vigolas, the Compass in his hand. Memories gone: his ship's name, his mother's face and song, Hild's face, his first crewmate's name, the bowline, his age, what was in the hold, "something small". And he keeps everyone.
Kompis, four guns, a fifth loop empty. A torn page. A brother's face he can't see.
Rougeina, short hair, a lighter heart, a list with one name left: SOLVIG.
Smurjan, three shadows side by side, seventeen voices, a heart that only beats in step when they agree.
Trollmage, a crown under his head as a pillow, two Codices: one that waits, and one that's hungry.
from Smurjan's shadow, setting out a bowl on the deck beside her. Then a second. A third. A fourth. Filling it. Pushing it to the empty edge of the blanket.
at the wheel, mask on, looking up at the Kettle's bell gleaming at the bow, then at a plank by the rail where a ship's name will go, if they ever buy it back.
Above the Current, the sentence the Arbiter wrote in Saga II still hangs faintly in the stars, missing its full stop: ONE MATCH. OF MANY
The verdict cube (the Arbiter's full stop, folded into a dice) hums in its pocket, faintly, as if something on the other side of the sky is listening.
The edge of the Current, where the starlight sea goes grey. No stars. No colour. Islands half-eaten at the rim, their edges fraying into nothing. The Null's edge.
Sitting on nothing, on the grey, is a figure in grey: tall, thin, in a long coat the colour of ash. Where its face should be there is a smooth blankness, like a page that has been written on and erased so many times the paper has gone soft. In its long fingers, a single page of the Ledger.
At the top in the Order's script: VIGOLAS. Under it, lines of rank, entry after entry, crossed out. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Each crossing-out in the same patient hand. Below the eighth, space for a ninth.
tilting its blank head at the page, almost fondly. Its voice is like paper tearing, very gently:
In the lining of Vigolas's midnight-green coat, hung on the mast, one of the 36 sewn pockets holds the black shard: cold, empty-looking, greying whatever touches it. It frosts over. Completely. White rime spreads across the coat's lining around it.
The Marka sailing toward the golden glow of Skatt under a sky that still reads ONE MATCH. OF MANY, with no full stop. Behind her, so far away it's only a faint grey smear on the horizon, the Null's edge. And on deck a crew asleep in a heap, and a golden dog keeping watch, lifting his head toward the grey, ears up, listening.
