Chapter 88
The harbour ringed by white walls, four realm-gates clamped shut in white iron along the far side. The Marka sits pinned in the middle of the water, the line of white light running straight through her hull from bow-rail to keel, and she doesn't rock at all. Along the quay, pens of white light are packed with Bloom-marked people. At the end of the pier stands Veyra at her stake.
Tall and broad-shouldered, dark-skinned, white hair cropped close to the skull, a thin pale scar along her jaw. Her armour is crystal, clear as river ice, worn over a white warden's uniform; through it you can see the stitching on her sleeves. Both gauntlets are wrapped around the head of the white iron stake, and her greaves have grown down into the pier in crystal spurs. Around her own feet, a tight little ring of white light: she always draws herself in first. The white serpent, scaled in crystal, lies across her shoulders.
Rougeina, alone on the stern side of the line, fixes her eyes on Vigolas at the bow and Swaps. The silver-rose spark flies at the line and shatters like glass against it. She's thrown flat on the deck.
Her panther takes a run and leaps the line, and bounces off it as if off a wall, yowling, claws skidding on the planks.
From the bow, Kompis fires Lilla Ulv at Veyra. The wolf cub of light bounds down the pier and stops dead in mid-air at the little ring round Veyra's feet, as if it ran into a window. It drops onto the planks, dazed, and fizzles out.
Codex open, ears flat, the crow on his head glaring at the line.
Vigolas walks to the line on the deck, takes a breath, and steps over it. A cold tingle runs up his leg, like wading into a winter stream. Then he's across, standing next to Rougeina.
not a flicker on her face.
Vigolas points down the pier at her, coat flaring.
The crew leaps from the Marka's rail onto the quay: Smurjan, Kali, Trollmage with the crow, Rougeina and her panther, Kompis first of all, Mingus scrambling after him off the gangplank.
The white serpent pours off them onto the pier, crystal scales flashing, fast as spilled water. Wherever it slides, it leaves a line of white light behind it, drawn on the stone, on the water, on the air.
In one long rush the serpent writes a web across the whole harbour: lines on the quay, across the water, up the white walls and through the empty air, glowing white like chalk on a slate. The Weir is cut into pens, and the crew is caught in them one by one: Vigolas and Trollmage in one; Smurjan alone in another, his three shadows pressed against its edges; Rougeina and her panther alone in a third; Kompis in a fourth. Drekk is alone at the Marka's wheel in a pen of his own. The Bloom-marked crowd, already penned, looks out at them through the light.
And at the centre of the web, perfectly still at her stake, Veyra: the serpent coiling back up her leg like ivy, its work done.
turning round. One of the lines has come down between him and Mingus: the dog was a step behind him, at the foot of the gangplank. Along the bottom border of the panel, the golden pulse line goes flat.
looking at the line. Then he does the simplest thing in the world. He walks across it, tail wagging, paws padding through the white light as if it were a puddle, and sits down on Kompis's feet.
Along the border, the golden pulse line comes back: ba-dum, ba-dum.
laughing, his hands in the dog's ruff.
Wendlan, his little finger in its ruler-splint, leans over a frame on his bench that shows the Weir from above like a map.
He draws one rectangle. Then another. Then another.
Inside every pen, a white frame unfolds, and Sentinels pour out of each one, right in among the crew. Inside the lines, everything moves freely, and that includes them.
ducking a chain, reading fast.
Kali bursts out of Smurjan's shadow, sickle first, cuts a Sentinel's chain and plants herself in front of the line, glaring at it.
fixed on the glowing line. She breathes in, the way she does when she takes a sin…
…and her eyes stay smoky dark. Nothing comes.
The third eye opens. In grey diagram lines, he sees the pier, the web, Veyra, and one crimson point: the head of the stake, under her gauntlets.
Smurjan walks the Sightline toward her. A Sentinel swings, and he steps half an inch. He reaches a line and steps over it; feet are allowed.
His next step lands in a white frame that has unfolded on the stone in front of him, and he steps out of another one on the roof of the fortress, forty metres up, facing the wrong way.
Smurjan climbs down the fortress wall without a word. He walks again. A frame, and he steps out waist-deep in the harbour. He wades out, robe dripping, and walks again. A frame, and he's on the Marka's yardarm.
climbing down the rigging, soaked, calm, all three shadows trailing him.
watching him, motionless.
which borders one of the Bloom-marked pens. Pressed against the line on the other side is a girl of about seven in a fisherman's knitted jumper, a gold knot glowing on the inside of her wrist, staring wide-eyed at the empty air above everyone's heads.
Gold threads everywhere. One of hers, the brightest, runs away from her across three white lines and over the water, to a pen on the far side of the harbour, where a woman in a fishwife's apron is pressed against the light, calling a name we can't hear.
kneeling down at the line so his face is level with hers, Mingus beside him.
(he shows her the gold knot on his own wrist)
looking at the white line between them for a long moment.
The girl presses her small palm flat against the light. Kompis puts his big hand against it from the other side. Between their hands, the line stays as hard as glass.
She's fighting three Sentinels with her blades alone, no Swaps, all footwork, her panther on the back of a fourth. She cuts a chain, kicks a helmet, and looks across at Vigolas's pen, where a whole squad is piling onto him and Trollmage.
She sheathes two blades, climbs a mooring post, runs along a boom-spar lying on the quay, and walks across the line into Vigolas's pen, barefoot, scowling. The panther pads after her.
In the whole fight she hasn't moved a muscle. A fly lands on her cheek, crawls to the corner of her eye, and she can't lift a hand to brush it away. Only her eyes move.
The whole harbour dims to grey, and the brightest gold thing in it, burning like a coin in a fire, is the head of the stake under her crystal gauntlets.
Wendlan, looking down into his map-frame at the crew in their glowing pens, nodding like a man who's just finished a tidy piece of joinery.
on the workbench, drawing one long rectangle, as big as the bench itself.
Under the crew's feet, in every pen on the quay, the stone floor opens: a frame lying flat in the ground, unfolding like a trapdoor. Below it there's no harbour mud and no water. There's sky: violet light, and far beneath, golden spires and towers of books, and pages flying like flocks of birds.
They drop: Vigolas, Rougeina and her panther, Kompis clutching Mingus, Smurjan and his three shadows, Trollmage, the crow flapping after him. Only Drekk, alone at the pinned Marka's wheel, stays behind, his masked face turned toward the sound of them falling.
