Chapter 218
The white towers on the peak of the Marhold Spine. And down the mountain's lower flank, slowly, a grey stain, spreading outward from somewhere deep inside the rock, soaking up through the stone like damp. Bells ringing in the towers. People pouring up the stairs away from it.
at the top of the Scriptorium well, for the first time in ninety-three years standing in daylight, blinking his milk-white eyes, an inked hand raised, directing Hushed Scribes and freed Sentinels up the stairs.
The crew climbing down out of the hidden passage, grey dust on their boots, into the fjord-light. Vigolas, Rougeina, Öde (hoarse, her arm still raised half out of habit), Drekk, Ysel. And a long, stooped figure nobody can quite look at directly: Oswin.
looking back up at the grey stain on the mountain.
sitting down on a bollard on the jetty, the star-lantern in his lap, its map wheeling, slower now, many of its stars dark. He looks very old.
sitting down next to him on the jetty without being asked, croaking.
uncapping her ink, and writing, small, on her arm, in the dark place-ink: a blue door · cardamom.
staring at her arm through three pairs of spectacles. Something in his dry, polite face breaking very gently.
standing, lifting his lantern, the wheeling map sliding over the crew's faces one last time.
plucking one last star out of the lantern's light, his own, and setting it nowhere.
Oswin, still standing on the jetty, misfiled. Every eye sliding off him. He's there; nobody can find him. He walks away up the fjord-path, and nobody sees him go.
who was never filed, turning his head to watch the place where Oswin walks, wagging, following him a few steps, and coming back.
(Nobody. Everybody.)
Twelve chairs on the glass floor. Two lit. Hjalmar's, the First. And Oswin's, the Fifth, its Signet glowing faintly, occupied by someone nobody can find. Ten dark. The glass floor dark. Hjalmar, back from the Scriptorium, sitting alone in the ring.
round the Hall's walls, eleven carved figures and one black bar. Under the black bar, in Hjalmar's milk-white gaze, a hairline crack in the stone, new this morning.
The Marka returning to the rim to fetch the rest of her crew. On the sand-gold stone, Kompis, Isa, Trollmage, Smurjan and Mingus waiting by the bench. And Vider, seated again, smoke still rising faintly from the shadow of his hood, the ring of ten slots beside him dark and cracked.
signing to the crew as they come ashore.
stepping off the Marka onto the rim, walking straight up to the bench, and stopping in front of the giant. Arms crossed. Her face stone.
bending toward her. A long stillness. Then his great hands, one still bandaged where the hook went through, signing slowly:
The rim of the world at sunset, the endless dark of the Second Void on one side, the starlit Current on the other. A seated hooded mountain on a sand-gold bench, smoke drifting faintly from the shadow of his hood, a ring of ten dark cracked slots beside him. Before him, a small crimson-haired woman with eight blades at her hips, arms crossed, refusing to look away.
His two enormous grey hands raised between them, mid-sign, and below, in Tecken's small square caption, the whole of it:
Around them, the crew, silent. Mingus lying at the giant's feet.
a long beat. Her jaw working. Her eyes wet and furious. She doesn't answer. She turns on her heel and walks back to the Marka.
(Not yet.)
settling back in his lap. Tecken glancing up at him. He signs one small thing to her, and she, for once, translates it without being asked.
the last to leave the rim, kneeling by the little cairn of stones Vider has built beside his bench over the centuries, and setting one more stone on top, very carefully.
the very last on the rim, giving the giant's wounded hand one more lick, then bounding up the gangplank after Kompis.
The Marka sailing back from the rim through the starlit sea. And on every horizon, the edges visibly closer than they were a week ago. A grey smudge where an island used to be. Stars going out, one, then another, while the crew watches.
at the bow, ear to the planks, then sitting up, a beat late.
The crew asleep in heaps. Rougeina alone at the stern with the bare wooden list in her lap, her thumb on the empty place where SOLVIG was. Kompis sitting down next to her, saying nothing, Mingus between them.
going, after a long moment, not to a blade but to Mingus's head. Scratching his ears. He leans into it, blissful.
in his hammock, unable to sleep, his coat hung on the mast beside him. Thirty-six pockets. The verdict cube. The Hound-ship. The Protocol Hall. The wave. The grey cube of a thousand decrees. And one pocket, the one that holds the black shard, frosted white since the end of Saga III.
The frost on it melting. A drip of water running down the coat's lining. A faint, steady warmth coming out of it, like a stone that's been in the sun.
opening his eyes, sitting up, reaching for the coat. Pulling out the black shard. For the first time since he stole it, it's warm.
black, faintly glowing at its broken edges, and a voice coming out of it, gentle, old, kind, like a grandfather speaking from the next room:
