SCALELIST UNIVERSE
Saga VI · The Third Sign · Arc 1 · The Bark

Chapter 334

Stage Iv
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, the Deep at night.

Two ships sailing under one trembling star, with islands drifting all round them the same way like leaves on a current: villages, rafts, a lighthouse-rock, a forest floating on its own roots. And the sea flickering: for a panel-corner's width, the black water simply not there, then there again.

P2CLOSE, Svala

on the masthead, blinking at the sea.

SVALA
…The water just went. · · For a second. · There was nothing under us.
DREKKat the wheel, hoarse
…Don't tell me things like that while I'm steering.
PAGE 2
P3CLOSE, the Marka's deck lantern.

Its flame flickering the same way: there, not there, there. Not wind. The lantern blinking out of being and back.

KOMPISeyes gold, watching the threads of the flame
…Reality's flickering. · · That's the third thing. · Dreams, mirrors, and then the world itself.
P4CLOSE, Smurjan

a hand on his chest.

SMURJAN
…Stage IV. · · Saturation. · The grey's not at the edge any more. · It's soaked into everything, a little.
PAGE 3
P5WIDE, the Marka's deck, the middle watch.

Most of the crew asleep in heaps by the fire: Isa, Öde, Levla, Ysel, Tihi across the gap on the Upp Igen. And Trollmage, flat on his back on a coil of rope with his hat over his face, as always.

TROLLMAGEmuffled, half asleep
…Banking. · Don't wake me. · I'm banking.
P6CLOSE, Trollmage's sleeping face

under the hat. And his dream, drawn as a soft thought-panel above him: the Library, warm, shelves, a cat, a macro half written in violet light.

PAGE 4
P7CLOSE, the dream-panel

and its edges going white. Not burning. Not fading to black. Whitening, like paper bleached in the sun, the shelves losing their colour, the cat losing its outline, the macro's violet letters going pale.

P8CLOSE, the dream-panel

all white. Nothing in it. Not even a border.

(Under the hat, Trollmage doesn't move.)

PAGE 5
P9CLOSE, Isa

asleep by the fire, and her dream-panel above her the same: her mother's three-day smile, going white.

ISAin her sleep, a beat late
…Mamma?
P10CLOSE, Tihi

on the Upp Igen, asleep, her dream-panel above her: Lo the clown, laughing, and the laugh going white, the paint going white, the clown going white.

TIHIin her sleep, small
…Not funny.
PAGE 6
P11CLOSE, Kompis

on watch, seeing it: every sleeper's thread on both decks thinning, going pale at the dreaming end.

KOMPIS
…Wake them! · · Everybody up! It's in the DREAMS!
P12ACTION.

Kompis shaking Isa, Svala dropping off the mast onto Levla, Krydog on the Upp Igen pulling Tihi up by the collar. The sleepers jerking awake one after another, gasping, blinking at a world with colour in it.

TIHIawake, wide-eyed
…Lo was white. · · He wasn't laughing.
PAGE 7
P13CLOSE, Trollmage

being shaken by Vigolas, lifting his hat. Blinking. Very slowly sitting up. Looking at his own hands.

P14CLOSE, Trollmage's hands

lifting, two fingers out, the way he writes a macro. Tracing in the air: MACRO : LIGHT = … And the violet letters coming out pale, thin, and after the colon, nothing. No amount. A blank where the waiting should be.

TROLLMAGEvery quietly
…Six hours I slept. · · And I banked nothing.
PAGES 8–9 — SPLASH
P15SPLASH (double page). WHITE.

The two ships on the flickering black sea under one star, both crews awake and staring at each other in the firelight. And above every one of them, drawn as soft panels hanging in the air, their last dreams: every one of them white. Trollmage's Library. Isa's mother. Tihi's clown. Öde's village. Levla's kite. Isa's whale. Blank, bleached, empty frames floating over two ships like a gallery of paintings someone stole the pictures out of.

And in the middle of the gallery, one frame that isn't white: a cabin, a fire, snow outside, a golden dog: the dream of the only one still asleep.

(Mingus, asleep on Kompis's feet, twitching, chasing something.)

PAGE 10
P16CLOSE, Kompis

looking up at Mingus's dream, the only one with colour.

KOMPISbarely audible
…His doesn't go.
SMURJAN
…He's an Immunity. · · The grey can't touch what he is. · Or what he dreams.
P17CLOSE, Trollmage

staring at his blank macro, a hand over his mouth. Something nobody has ever seen on his face: fear.

TROLLMAGE
…If I can't wait, I can't cast. · · If I can't sleep… · I'm a big lazy troll with a crown on.
PAGE 11
P18CLOSE, Emma

coming across the gap from the Upp Igen with her ash staff and a stick of chalk.

EMMA
…Then sleep inside this.
P19ACTION.

Emma drawing a circle on the Marka's deck round the rope-coil where Trollmage lies, one walk, the ends meeting. The circle waking.

EMMA
…Inside. · · Nothing can be made in here. · Not a choice. · Not a dream.
TROLLMAGE
…The white isn't making me dream anything. · It's taking the dream.
EMMA
…Then try it.
PAGE 12
P20CLOSE, Trollmage

lying back down inside the chalk circle, very carefully, as if into cold water. Hat over his face. Emma sitting cross-legged on the line beside him.

EMMA
…I'll be right here.
TROLLMAGEmuffled
…You'll be bored.
EMMA
…I'm very good at bored.
P21CLOSE, Trollmage's dream-panel

rising again: the Library, the cat, the warm shelves. And at its edges, the white creeping in, and stopping at a faint chalk line drawn round the dream itself, the way it stops round a sleeper.

PAGE 13
P22CLOSE, the dream-panel

holding. Colour inside the chalk line. White outside it, pressing, not getting in.

KOMPISstaring
…It's holding.
EMMAquiet, a grey strand appearing at her temple
…The white wants the dream to end. · · In here nothing can be made to end.
P23WIDE, the decks.

Emma's crew already moving: chalk circles on both ships, round every sleeping-place, Jeppson drawing the lines Emma can't reach (hands shaking), a ring of rope laid round the Upp Igen's hammocks.

KRYDOG
…Sleep in the rings! · · Everybody who sleeps sleeps in a ring!

(Krydog, who never sleeps, says this with great authority.)

PAGE 14
P24CLOSE, Trollmage

waking an hour later inside the circle. Lifting two fingers. Writing: MACRO : LIGHT = 1 HOUR in bright violet, the amount glowing, real.

TROLLMAGEa long breath out
…Banked. · · One hour. · · Emma, I'll marry you.
EMMA
…No, you won't.
TROLLMAGE
…No, I won't. · But I'd think about it.
P25CLOSE, Rougeina

at the rail, looking into her blade. Her reflection back in it, for a second, then gone, then back, flickering like the lantern.

ROUGEINAto herself, very quietly
…Torvik. Baldr. Stillmark. · · At least I can still see the ones who are here.
PAGE 15
P26WIDE, before dawn.

The ships coming out of the drift of islands into open water, the trembling star overhead, and ahead on the horizon, growing, a light that isn't a star: a Beam, sweeping, turning, enormous.

DREKK
…Fyren.
P27CLOSE, the Beam

passing over them, silver, and in its light, for one moment, everything solid: the flickering sea steady, the lantern steady, every reflection in every blade back.

SVALAfrom the mast
…It stopped flickering! · In the light it stops!
DREKK
…In the Beam nothing can get lost. · · Old man always said.
PAGE 16
P28WIDE, closer.

The black rock at the Mouth of the Current, the 212-step tower, the crystal lens turning on quicksilver, the white keeper's cottage at its foot. And past the rock, the Mouth, closed: the wall of mist at the Current's edge.

P29CLOSE, Perne

on the Upp Igen's masthead, Fjärran at her eye, a crimson tear starting, looking past the Mouth, through the mist, into the Shallows on the other side.

PERNEvery quiet
…Captain. · · There's something on the other side of the Mouth.
PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P30PERNE'S VIEW, through the scope and the mist.

The Shallows beyond the Mouth, and across them, from horizon to horizon, lanterns. Hundreds. Ships of the Order: the Council of Four's colours, Sentinel pennants, the white hulls of the last Bastion fleet, the black-and-silver of something new, ships with no names on their bows, waiting. Anchored in a great crescent round the Mouth.

P31FINAL PANEL, close on Perne

lowering the scope, the crimson tear running down.

PERNE
…The Order's last fleet. · · And whatever the Arbiter's sent with it. · · They're waiting for whatever comes out.
