Chapter 333
The white-stone island where a hundred roads of light come in over the Current from every realm and cross at its heart. Signposts pointing every way at once. And on top of the bell-tower with no bell, a woman in a dust-brown road-coat, a raven braid whipping in the wind, swinging a great curved horn of cork-ridged bark off her shoulder.
planting her boots on the parapet, the horn's mouthpiece at her lips, her dawn-gold eyes flashing like sunrise through a gap in a wall. Gold script running down from the corners of her mouth along her throat like a cord.
filling. A runner's lungs, a breath that takes a whole panel.
and the first note leaving it: drawn as a wave of gold light rolling out across the island, down every road at once.
Vägskälet from above: a white island at the crossing of a hundred roads of light, and from its tower the horn's call running out along every road at once, into every realm and every island, and in huge, hard capitals running off the edges of the page in every direction:
And under the letters, tiny on the tower top, a woman with a horn bigger than her arm, her whole body bent like a bow, laughing.
Gate City: the board in the square, and every person under it hearing the same words at the same instant.
Brygdar: stone kings in the cliffs with their eyes open, and a crooked troll-iron crown on a rock in the King's Bed, ringing.
The Ring Halls: in the dark under Codexia, something vast that has sat still for three hundred years lifting its head: Eken.
Fyren: Hallbard, his hand on the lens, very still.
On a road in Scalelist, a man in a stolen road-coat with a forged horn, a Liars' Post runner, stopping dead in the dust, his own horn going silent in his hands.
In the Silence at the rim of Void-II, a man who speaks one sentence a century, Vider, opening his hands.
On the Pillar of Names in Thanatos, a blindfolded woman, Ögar, turning her head toward the sound.
the call fading, and Torva lowering it from her lips. Laughing. Doubled over on the parapet, laughing like a girl.
the laugh turning, without any gap at all, into crying. Sitting down on the parapet with the horn across her knees, face in her hands, shoulders shaking.
wiping her face with her sleeve, trying to take a breath, and wheezing: her chest hitching, the gold cord down her throat dimming.
And in it, appearing one by one, black, square, slow, written by no hand across the dawn: letters.
The two ships, the Marka and the Upp Igen, coming down the slow grey river toward the gate where a black bar closed the way out three chapters ago, and the gate open: the bar burned away in a dog's sun. Beyond it, the grey trees of the Witness Wood.
the same letters writing themselves across it, slow, black, square:
THE CONVERGENCE.
at the Marka's rail, reading it, his face going still.
the next letters arriving:
ONE MATCH.
(And no more. No "OF MANY." Just a full stop, black and square and final.)
looking up at it. At the full stop. Remembering, perhaps, a full stop that fell on his ship once and that he folded into a cube.
on the Upp Igen, his hand on his plain sword, reading the sky like a judge reads a charge.
Lumen: over six white towers, THE CONVERGENCE. ONE MATCH. Iskall looking up, her lamp held close.
The Burn: across a red-gold sky where light comes before its lamps, the letters arriving before they're written. Aska reading them early.
Tidekant: over the lake. Njord, who can't read fast, having Sill sign it to him.
The Splinterlands: Flisa, looking up through the roots, spitting a splinter. "…Rude."
every number on it frozen, and across the top of the board where the realm's name is carved, the black letters writing themselves over the carving.
The two ships gliding out of Thanatos into the grey forest between death and return, no birds, no wind. And on a stump at the side of the river as they pass, nobody: just a stump, and a book left open on it, its pages turning by themselves.
A page with a column of names, and at the bottom, in a small exact hand, one fresh line:
They left by the river-gate. Witnessed.
(Rougeina sees it as they pass. She says nothing. She touches her heart.)
Out of the Witness Wood into black water under a sky with one star: Lumen's Seventh, trembling but there. And on the horizon in every direction, islands drifting, not inward now but all one way, like leaves on a current. Toward Ferdinand.
at the wheel, the rune of GATHER faint on his own cheek where he leaned on the wheel to doze for a minute.
sitting on the deck with Mingus, who is asleep on his back with his legs in the air, snoring, exhausted from calling the world.
(Mingus snores.)
at the bow, Aska's ember warm in his pocket, the black handprint on his wrist, looking at the black letters in the starless sky.
Torva on the tower top, sitting with her back to the parapet, wheezing, the horn across her knees. Below, on every road of light into the island, travellers arriving: a troll on a road from Brygdar, a lamp-bearer child on a road from Lumen, a woman in white with soot washed off her face on a road from the Burn. All of them stopping at the crossroads. All of them looking up at her.
looking down at them, too out of breath to shout. Pointing, instead, with one long arm, at the one road out of Vägskälet that isn't lit: overgrown, dark, its signpost rotted, the twelfth.
overgrown with grey thorns, its signpost so old the letters are worn off, and a faint line in the dust where something carved once said THE ARENA.
on the horn across her knees. The bark of it cork-ridged, warm. A fine crack already running a little way down its length, from the answer it just gave.
The two ships under the one star, sailing with the drifting islands toward a light on the far horizon that is not a star: a beam, sweeping, turning, enormous. Fyren.
squinting at the Beam, his face grim.
(On the Upp Igen, Flexsnus very carefully doesn't look at his tin.)
