Chapter 332
Inside the world tree: pale growth rings like plains, sap-rivers of amber light, and the tree's slow heartbeat thudding through the floor, faster now, like a heart that's heard something. Cork welling from a hundred cracks in the heartwood.
at the heart of the wood: an old, old woman, small and bent, her braid grown into the floor, her palms scarred with rune-burns, both hands flat on the heartwood. Runa, a hundred rings older than she was a season ago. Listening to the echo of a bark.
pulling her flint burin from her belt with shaking fingers. Looking at her own palms: the scars, old and fresh.
The tree's heartbeat. One of Ferdinand's: a season long. She waits for it. Eyes closed. The panel holding.
opening, and a rune coming out of it: not a sound. A shape, silver, burning, carved in the air like a first letter: three lines meeting at a point, like roads.
the rune burning into them fresh, white-hot, and the heartwood under them taking it: the silver shape sinking into the grain and racing outward along every ring, every root, down, out, away.
Ferdinand, seen from below, his roots spreading out into nine realms like rivers on a map, and along every root at once, a silver rune racing, three lines meeting at a point, lighting the grain from the heart outward: into Scalelist's soil, under Helios's towers, through Astralis's mirrors, Codexia's shelves, Heartbeat's snow, Trinity's compost, Thanatos's river, out under the Current to every island with a root in it.
And at every place a root comes near the surface, a sleeper lying on it: a fisherman asleep on a dock post, a child asleep against a tree, a troll asleep on a cliff of stone kings, a soldier asleep on a battlefield root, an old woman on a porch. And under every sleeping cheek, a silver rune, lighting.
Brygdar: a troll asleep on the King's Bed, waking with a rune on his cheek, sitting up: "…Ferdinand's side."
Tidekant: Sill asleep on the end of the dock, sitting bolt upright, signing at her grandfather before she's awake: [The tree. The SIDE of the tree.]
Lumen: a Lamp-bearer child asleep on a hill-root, waking, pointing.
Askslätten: Kvar, asleep sitting up against his spade, which is planted in a root: one eye opening. "…Well."
falling. One cork-oak leaf, gold, slow, drifting down out of nowhere in a hundred places at once: in a market, on a deck, into a teacup, onto a sleeping baby's blanket.
(It's the same leaf, everywhere.)
Trollmage, who had dozed off standing at the rail after the bark, his cheek against the bark of the rail, jerking awake, the silver rune on his face blazing with a new shape: three lines meeting at a point.
his ear pressed to the rail, listening through the wood the way he did as a child on a root near Brygdar.
beside him.
at the wheel, frowning at his charts, then dropping them, because he knows: the rune has reached him too, through the deck. His hand on the spokes turning the Marka's head without being told.
eyes gold, seeing the threads of the whole world turning, now not just toward the tree but toward one point on it, like iron filings snapping to a pole.
her blade half out, looking at its mirror-bright face: and the blade reflecting the deck with nobody on it. An empty ship.
leaning over her shoulder, looking into the blade. His own face not in it. Nobody's face in it. Just the deck, the mast, the bell, empty.
a beat late, coming up from below, pale.
The crews looking at each other. At their reflections not there in the water. The witnessed dead stirring in their boats, the far grey still paused.
already shouting across the lashings, under the Upp Igen's figurehead, the bandaged fist carved from his own, cork welling from its knuckles.
herding forty-one plateless refugees below decks with a ladle, gently.
untying the lashings between the two ships, his rings dull, looking back once at the near shore of Thanatos: the thirty-one boats, the hundred and eleven, Old Stav asleep in the stands.
The two ships casting off from the stone jetty, sails filling with a wind that has no source, Drekk turning the Marka's head toward the river-gate, the Upp Igen falling in beside her.
on the stern, looking back at the far hill: the shut chalk door in its black frame, holding.
Runa, slumped in her rowan grove, a little more bent, a little smaller, her new palm-scar smoking. And a leaf, gold, settling on her knee.
closing her eyes, her cheek against the heartwood like a child on a root.
A small island of white stone where a hundred roads meet: roads of light coming in from every direction over the water, from every realm, crossing at its heart. Signposts pointing every way at once. An inn. A bell-tower with no bell. Vägskälet: the Crossroads.
Over the back of a chair, in its leather harness: a horn. A great curved horn of pale, cork-ridged bark, longer than a woman's arm, like a crescent moon. Utterly still.
asleep at the table beside the chair, her head on her arms, a map spread under her cheek: a runner's build, a dust-brown road-coat with every pocket stuffed with letters, a raven-black braid to the small of her back tied with red signal-cloth. A silver rune glowing under her cheek, three lines meeting at a point.
opening her eyes, dawn-gold. Not sitting up. Just looking sideways, from her arms, at the horn on the chair.
in its harness. And the strap trembling. The horn rocking, very slightly, on the chair-back, all by itself, its bark ridges humming, like a thing about to say something too true and too large to keep in.
standing up, one eyebrow raised, swinging the horn's harness over her shoulder, a herald's calm on her face, and under it, fear.
