Chapter 331
Exactly where Saga V ended: cork welling up between the planks, the Kettle's brass bell above, and a golden retriever planted under it, ears up, chest full, mouth opening.
behind him, a hand half-raised toward the dog, frozen.
No background. No river, no ship, no sky. Just a golden retriever, drawn huge across both pages, head thrown back, mouth open, and coming out of him, filling everything, one sound:
A city of white towers under a white sky where commands arrive before their causes. Every tower ringing like a struck bell. An empty throne at the top of nine steps, and on it, for one panel, the shadow of a man in a long coat who isn't there yet.
Mirrors over starlit black. Black panthers lifting their heads in a field of nettles. A tall woman in the nettles, Nässla, straightening, looking up.
Shelves to the sky, seventy-seven dead lights, and every one of them flaring.
A small cabin in snow. Empty. The fire in its grate flaring up, all by itself, as if someone had opened the door. And above the door, in the lintel, an old iron nail trembling.
The Compost Fields, the soil between death and respawn, and a woman of rot and roots, Röta, kneeling among them with her hands in the earth, looking up, smiling.
The witnessed dead, asleep in their boats, all turning their heads at once toward the sound, the way sleepers turn toward a voice they love.
Fyren: Hallbard, in his lamp-room, the Beam stuttering. "…Hm."
Lumen: Iskall on the sixth tower, her clay lamp flaring white.
The Burn: Aska standing off her stump; Ivo dropping the onion.
The Splinterlands: Flisa, at the first strip, every gold glint in every root lighting at once.
Tidekant: Njord on the dock, his eyes moving like water, and for the first time in his life hearing something that isn't weather.
Flyttfågeln: ten thousand birds lifting, and then, all of them, turning one way.
The colossal Scalelist board in the square, every number on it stopping. Not flickering. Stopping. As if the board were listening.
Twelve chairs round a long table. Ten dark. One faint (the Fifth). One lit: a blind old man, Hjalmar, his milk-white eyes wide, his hands flat on the bleeding table.
at the end of the table. Empty since Jorvand walked out of it three hundred years ago. A chair nobody can ever sit in. The cork welling out of it like out of everything else.
For one panel, drawn as nothing: a white panel with no border, no line, no grain. And across it, faint, for the first time in the history of nothing: a single ripple. As if something with no ears had heard.
(No balloon.)
The same blank. Still. Not advancing. Not retreating.
Paused.
The lashed ships at the stone jetty. The bark echoing, rolling away across the river of the dead and over the hills and gone into every direction at once. Both crews frozen on the decks. The grey on the far shore not moving.
closing his mouth. Shaking his ears. Sitting down on the bleeding planks, very pleased with himself, tail sweeping cork.
(He looks up at Kompis as if to say: there.)
on his knees, both hands on the dog's face.
(Mingus licks his nose.)
at the rail, very pale, his crown crooked, the silver rune on his cheek glowing.
standing at the bow beside the dog, looking out at the grey on the far shore, which has stopped.
beside them, her hand on her blades, saying eight names under her breath, looking at the sky.
looking down at Mingus. Remembering, suddenly: a cabin, a fire, snow outside, a boy who wouldn't eat and a golden dog who pushed the Nursery door open.
(Mingus sneezes.)
on the Upp Igen, looking from the dog to the far grey to the sky.
beside him, quiet, his hand resting on the plain sword he's drawn four times in his life.
at the wheel, staring up. The sky over Thanatos, river-grey, and in it, very faint, very high, like letters written on the inside of a lid: black squares, beginning to appear. One at a time.
The empty Twelfth chair at the end of the long table. And the air above it thickening. Not grey. Not dark. A haze, like heat over a road, like the smell of a match just ended. Shapes in it that aren't shapes: a raised hand, a bowed head, a falling sword, a full stop. Every outcome the Arena ever decided, gathering.
blind, feeling it, his face going still.
settling into the chair. Shoulders that are a thousand shoulders. A head that is every head that ever bowed. No face. Only outcomes, layered, turning, like pages of a book riffled very fast.
forming in the air above the table, one at a time, slow, deliberate, written by no hand:
I HAVE WAITED.
his hands flat on the bleeding table, his blind eyes on the chair.
writing on:
THEN I WILL FINISH WHAT HE COULD NOT.
Twelve chairs. Ten dark. One faint. One lit by an old blind man. And in the Twelfth, at the end of the table, under a carved frieze of a tall stooped man with a kind face, something with no face and only outcomes, sitting down at last, settling, the cork running out of the chair under it.
and the thing in it, raising one hand that is every hand that ever ended a match.
