Chapter 335

The Beam Again
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, Fyren at dawn.

The black rock at the Mouth of the Current, the lighthouse 212 steps tall, the crystal lens turning on quicksilver, the Beam sweeping the Deep. The white keeper's cottage at the tower's foot, its door open so she can hear the sea. And the two ships coming in to the rock's little jetty, bark-hulled, battered, one of them weeping cork from every seam.

P2CLOSE, the lamp-room

at the top of the 212 steps. A sea-foam-bearded giant at the lens with a rag in his hand, his eyes narrowed to slits, polishing a lens that doesn't need it. Hallbard. Not turning round.

HALLBARD
…I see you, son. · · Only because the Beam's on you. · Come up.
PAGE 2
P3WIDE, the 212 steps.

Vigolas, Krydog, Kompis and Mingus climbing the spiral, Mingus bounding ahead, three steps at a time, biscuit-hopeful.

KRYDOGpanting
…Two hundred and twelve. · Every time.
VIGOLAS
…He doesn't sit. · He's never had to climb them.
P4CLOSE, Hallbard

turning from the lens as Mingus arrives, pulling a biscuit from his coat without looking and dropping it exactly into the dog's mouth.

HALLBARD
…I heard the bark. · · Whole lighthouse shook. · The lens rang.
PAGE 3
P5CLOSE, Hallbard

the Beam sweeping past behind him, lighting him gold for a moment, then gone.

HALLBARD
…And then the horn. · · And then the letters in the sky. · · And now you lot. · Bleeding cork all over my jetty.
P6CLOSE, Vigolas

at the lamp-room's window, looking out past the Mouth's wall of mist.

VIGOLAS
…We need to get home, Hallbard. · Through the Mouth. · · To the side of the tree.
PAGE 4
P7CLOSE, Hallbard

turning the great crank that turns the lens. The Beam swinging round to the Mouth, and through the mist, in its light, the Shallows beyond: the crescent of lanterns. The Order's last fleet.

HALLBARD
…I see them, son. · · Only in the Beam. · But I see them.
P8CLOSE, the Beam on the fleet.

Council of Four colours. Sentinel pennants. The last Bastion hulls, white. And among them, black-and-silver ships with no names, their decks crowded with figures in grey that don't move, don't talk, stand in perfect rows, like statues of soldiers.

KOMPISeyes gold
…Those ones have no threads. · · Not cut. · They just… end. · Like a sentence with a full stop.
HALLBARD
…The Arbiter's. · Completion-hunters, the fishermen call them. · They finish things.
PAGE 5
P9CLOSE, Hallbard

letting the Beam swing on, past the fleet, back to the Deep. His face very old.

HALLBARD
…Here's the trouble, son. · · The Mouth only opens in the Beam. · For one heartbeat. · For one ship. · · And when I open it…
P10CLOSE, Hallbard

turning to them.

HALLBARD
…they see you come out. · · Every lantern in that crescent. · · A lighthouse doesn't choose its ships. · But it lights them for everyone.
PAGE 6
P11CLOSE, Krydog

folding his bandaged arms.

KRYDOG
…So light us and we fight our way through.
HALLBARD
…Through that? · · Two ships and a dog? · · I've watched the Current four hundred years, son. · I know what a fleet does to two ships.
P12CLOSE, Vigolas

very quiet.

VIGOLAS
…Then don't light us.
HALLBARD
…Then the Mouth doesn't open.

P13SPLASH (double page). THE KEEPER'S CHOICE.

The lamp-room at the top of Fyren: the crystal lens, the quicksilver, the Beam pouring out across two worlds. On one side of the rock, the Deep: two battered bark ships bleeding cork at a little jetty, islands drifting past. On the other side of the Mouth's mist-wall, the Shallows: a crescent of a hundred ships with lanterns lit, and among them black-and-silver hulls crowded with still grey figures.

And in the middle, between them, a giant sea-foam-bearded man with a rag in his hand who has stood in this room for four hundred years without sitting down, looking from one side to the other.

HALLBARDvery quietly
…If I light the Mouth, they see you. · · If I don't, the Mouth won't open.
PAGE 9
P14CLOSE, Kompis

not listening for a moment. Turning. Looking down through the lamp-room window at the white cottage at the tower's foot. At the open door.

KOMPIS
…Hallbard. · · Is she still asleep?
HALLBARDa long beat
…Nine years, three months. · · I keep her lamp lit. · I tell her about the ships.
P15CLOSE, Kompis

already moving for the stairs.

KOMPIS
…Everybody's dreams are going white.
PAGE 10
P16WIDE, the white cottage.

Kompis coming through the open door, Mingus at his heels. A small room. A bed. A lamp beside it, lit. And in the bed, a girl of about fifteen, asleep, a lantern-girl's coat folded at the foot, a small smile: Vaka.

P17CLOSE, Kompis

kneeling by the bed, his eyes going gold. And above the sleeping girl, her dream: a soft panel, a ferry at night, a lantern held up, faces turning toward its light, and at the dream's edges, white, creeping in, like frost on a window.

KOMPISbarely audible
…No. · · Not her.
PAGE 11
P18CLOSE, Mingus

climbing onto the foot of the bed, lying down across the girl's feet. And the white at the edge of her dream pausing, near the dog. Not retreating. Pausing.

KOMPIS
…He can hold it back a bit. · · Not forever.
P19CLOSE, Hallbard

in the doorway, huge, filling it, his slitted eyes seeing nothing in the dim room except where the lamp's glow falls. He's come down 212 steps for the first time in years.

HALLBARDhoarse
…What's happening to her?
PAGE 12
P20CLOSE, Kompis

not looking away from the dream.

KOMPIS
…The white's getting into dreams, Hallbard. · · If it finishes hers… · she won't wake up. · Ever.
P21CLOSE, Hallbard

his hand on the doorframe, the wood creaking under it.

HALLBARD
…She lit every dreamer on this rock. · · Every one of them added a day to her sleep. · · To wake her, somebody has to go into the dream and light her. · · And I'd have to sleep.
PAGE 13
P22CLOSE, Kompis

looking up at him.

KOMPIS
…I can go in. · · I've built dreams before. · I've walked in them. · · What do you mean you'd have to sleep?
P23CLOSE, Hallbard

a long, long silence. Then very quietly.

HALLBARD
…She keeps the dreamers lit. · · I keep her lit. · · As long as one of us is awake, the other can't come back. · · I've known that nine years.
PAGE 14
P24CLOSE, Vigolas

in the doorway behind Hallbard, putting it together.

VIGOLAS
…So you never slept.
HALLBARD
…Four hundred years I never slept because the lamp needed me. · · Nine years I never slept because she did.
P25CLOSE, Hallbard

looking at the girl. At the lamp beside her. At the white creeping in at the edge of her dream.

HALLBARDbarely audible
…And now the lamp needs me awake and she needs me asleep. · · On the same night.
PAGE 15
P26WIDE, the cottage.

A giant in a doorway. A boy on his knees by a bed. A dog on a girl's feet. A pirate behind. And a bandaged man pushing past the pirate into the small room, looking at the sleeping girl, then up at the giant.

P27CLOSE, Krydog

folding his arms.

KRYDOG
…I said something to you once. · · On this rock. · About keeping the lamp.
HALLBARDslowly
…"Not yet." · That's what I said back.
KRYDOG
…And "I'll remember you said that."
PAGE 16
P28CLOSE, Hallbard

staring at him.

HALLBARD
…You don't know how to keep a lamp.
KRYDOG
…I know how to stay awake. · · Four thousand one hundred and ninety-one nights. · · And an afternoon.
P29CLOSE, Vigolas

looking from Krydog to the Beam sweeping past the window to the crescent of lanterns beyond the Mouth. An idea arriving, the way a storm arrives where it already wanted to go.

VIGOLASslowly
…Hallbard. · · What if the lamp didn't need you tonight?
PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P30CLOSE, Hallbard

turning to him.

HALLBARD
…The Mouth only opens in the Beam, son.
VIGOLAS
…So open it. · · And then…
P31FINAL PANEL, close on Vigolas

the Beam passing behind him through the window, lighting him gold, and then gone, leaving him in the dark.

VIGOLAS
…put the light out.
