Chapter 143
One beam of morning light falls down the sun-shaft onto the kneeling giant. On his shoulder, in the light, two women: Ingrith with an empty belt and a measuring tape, and Rougeina, barefoot, blades sheathed. Below them, the last of the Examiners (K-II MARKED again, their seals cold) come swarming back up the axe-handles to save their Architect.
Rougeina as Ingrith sees her: a slim, faceless blank with a plate where a face should be: ROUGEINA · K-IV SHAPED · #777.
Below them, the crew holds the giant's back:
Smurjan, three shadows again, script blazing: the Triple Pulse. Sightline, sickle and bite in one beat, and three Examiners peel off the axes like ripe fruit.
Kompis, sitting against the shield with one arm round his cracked ribs, fires Fru Gnista one-handed straight up the giant's spine: a crackling crown of fireworks, and the climbers let go, dazzled. FRU GNISTA: "Down you come, darlings!"
Kali, swinging up the sword-hilt in Eken's back: "Sorry! Not hitting him! Hitting YOU!"
Mingus, tooth in his mouth, growls at the bottom of the ladder of axes, and nobody else tries it.
ignoring all of it, looking at Rougeina's plate.
Eken lifts one slow palm up to his own shoulder, and Vigolas steps off it, soaked, the wave-cube in his sash, the Compass pointing back down at his crew.
drawing out of her breast pocket a small brass plate, worn smooth by thumbs, with neat numbers on it: K-I UNMARKED · Scalelist #3,004,117.
holding the plate. Her voice cracks for the first time.
looking at the blank where Rougeina's face is.
eyes closing behind cracked lenses, the brass plate held against her heart.
(We see only Rougeina's shoulders in the beam of dawn, and a flash of silver-rose.)
A great spread of fragments around a single beam of dawn light in the centre, where a slim barefoot silhouette stands alone on a giant's shoulder.
Gate City, the great Scalelist board in the square: every rank plate on it freezes. The K-letters stop flickering mid-change, true or not. Only the numbers in the columns keep moving.
A Trisdel checkpoint: an Examiner brings down his bronze seal on a smuggler, and the seal is cold, dead metal. It thumps on the man's shoulder and does nothing at all.
A fishing harbour: an old K-II net-mender whose new mark blazes as bright as any K-IV. His plate still says K-II, and he doesn't care.
In the Ring Halls, over the snoring king on his shield, his plate hangs in the air and sets like cooling iron: TROLLMAGE · K-II MARKED (assigned) · #120,331.
Seal-domes all over the world melt away like frost on a window.
And in the Council Hall, a small square of white light settles on the Fourth Chair and goes dark.
on the giant's shoulder, alone in the light, the little brass plate in her palm. Her knees give. Her heart: ba………… dum. 113. The heaviest stone yet.
unfolded on her knee. She crosses off INGRITH. Below it there's only one name left, in older ink: SOLVIG.
ACTION, same panel. She slides off the shoulder, and Vigolas catches her on the way down.
Under the crew's feet the floor of the Ring Halls has turned grey: fine ash rising up through the stone like mist off a lake. Askslätten, the ash-plain that rises wherever a battle ends. On the overturned head of a smashed war-engine sits a man of about forty, stubbled, in a burned leather coat hung with thousands of cut threads.
KVAR · RÖNNKVIST-5 · not on any board
in Vigolas's arms.
Kvar climbs with Rougeina on his back, and the crew walks beside him, never behind: Vigolas, Kompis leaning on Smurjan, Kali talking softly to no one. The troll guards carry the snoring king on his shield, and Smurjan carries Stav, wrapped in sailcloth, in his burned arms. Mingus trots alongside with the tooth. At the bottom of the stair the kneeling giant watches them go, the sun on his ferns.
Snow, smoke, hammers. Trolls rebuilding the broken halls. Along every cliff the stone kings are lying back down into the mountains, slowly, like old men settling into armchairs. But their eyes stay open. At the slipway the Marka is being patched, and Drekk stands among the shipwrights with his hand on her bark.
Trollmage opens his eyes. Crown crooked on his head, the crow asleep on his chest, Ulla's scarf. Around the bed sits the crew, bandaged: Kompis with his ribs strapped, Rougeina pale but upright, Vigolas with his coat drying on a pillar.
looking round the hall at all the faces. Counting. One is missing.
(Nobody answers.)
sitting on the edge of the King's Bed, very gently.
His long ears go down, all the way down. He pulls Ulla's scarf up over his face. The crow wakes and presses itself against his cheek without a sound. A long, silent panel.
leaning against the King's Bed: every king's face carved on it, and the smooth, uncarved knob at the top. A very old troll of the Dresk Council stands beside it.
lowering the scarf, sitting up in the King's Bed with the crown crooked on his head and his eyes red.
The whole troll nation stands along the shore. Six trolls carry Old Stav up the cliff path and lay him gently against the rock among the stone kings. And the mountain takes him: grey stone grows over him slowly, like a blanket being drawn up, until where he lay there's a new face in the cliff, small among the giants. One broken tusk. A beard like hanging moss. Smiling. The stone kings on either side turn their great open eyes to look at him.
Drekk, bell-rope mask lifted toward the new face he can't see but can feel. Smurjan beside him with his burned palms flat on the rock.
sitting on the slipway with the king-staff across his knees and a small knife, carving the uncarved knob at the top, very slowly, very lazily, tongue between his tusks: a small face, a broken tusk, a beard.
standing, setting the troll-iron crown back on his own head. It goes on crooked. He leaves it that way.
Drekk comes down the Long Stair with the king on his back like a sack of flour, and the king carries a basket of bread. The hole in the roof has been patched by trolls, and the sun-shaft falls on the kneeling giant. Trollmage climbs down and sets the basket at his knee.
The mouse holds up the crumpled paper. EKEN. BREAD-MAN. FRIENDS… And at the bottom, in the newest and most careful letters of all: STAV.
Four Architects in a ring of twelve chairs, eight seats dark. The tiny ancient man in the First Chair, the grey woman in the Second, a thin archivist in the Fifth, and the scarred old soldier with his tower-shield in the Tenth.
The Marka slides down the slipway and out toward the sea-gate. The two carved kings part their stone lips for her. All along the cliffs, open stone eyes watch her go, and among them one small face, smiling. On deck the crew is bandaged and war-weary, and at the bow stands the king in his crooked crown. The Compass on the captain's chest points steadily back along the deck at all of them.
A pedestal in a violet alcove. A thick old crimson book, chained shut. The last thin red line across its glowing page lifts, drifts upward and fades. The book's chain begins, very faintly, to tremble. In alcove after alcove, all the way up the spiral, seventy books begin to hum, a low note, like a held breath.
Trollmage's bag lies at his feet by the bow. Something inside it twitches, pushing at the flap, and an amber glow leaks out of the gap like light under a door. The crow, on the rail, stares at it. Trollmage, looking out at the sea, doesn't notice.
