Chapter 142

North
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, the Ring Halls.

The wave comes down the corridor, black fjord-water as tall as a house, roaring, pouring past the kneeling giant's shoulders. In front of everything stands one man in a midnight-green coat.

P2FLASH, cutting into the panel like a crack in glass.

Another night, another sea. Rain. A ship under black sails, and a wave rising over her bow. Below deck the hold glows gold. On deck, his first crew, drenched, faces turned to him and blurred, waiting for an order.

VIGOLASbarely
…Not again. Not again—
PAGE 2
P3ACTION, behind him.

The crew, every one of them a K-I tonight. Kompis on one knee, gold gone from his arms. Rougeina with her rings cold, unable to Swap. Smurjan with one shadow, holding Stav's body. The troll guards frozen slow. The king asleep on his shield. Mingus barking at the water.

KOMPIS
Captain! CAPTAIN! Where do we go?! PICK!
P4CLOSE, the brass Compass

on its cord at Vigolas's chest, its needle spinning so fast it's a blur, the way it has spun every day of his life.

PAGE 3
P5GREED-SIGHT.

The world flares gold by value, the way it always has for him. The troll-iron crown on the sleeping head burns like a forge. The 36 shards blaze through the lining of his coat. The cubes glow in his sash. The Shelvers' scattered brass tubes, three thousand years of Eken's memory, shine on the floor like ingots. Beyond the passage, the Library: seventy lights, the greatest treasure in nine realms. Everything he ever wanted, all of it, in one hall, with a wave coming.

P6GREED-SIGHT, closer.

And then, among all that gold, his crew: Kompis, Rougeina, Smurjan with Kali's shadow and Bakasura's under it, the snoring king, the dog. In Greed-sight they burn brighter. Brighter than the crown. Brighter than the shards. Brighter than every book in the Library. Six small suns in a hall full of treasure, and next to them the treasure looks like brass.

PAGE 4
P7CLOSE, the Compass.

The blur slows. The needle shivers, swings once, twice, and stops. For the first time in his life it points. Down the hall. At them.

P8CLOSE, Vigolas.

Very quiet. The grin isn't there, and neither is the fear.

VIGOLAS
…Them.
VIGOLAS
It was always them.
PAGE 5
P9ACTION.

He doesn't run from the wave, and he doesn't run for the gold. He plants himself between the water and his people, one hand open toward it.

VIGOLAS
COMPACT.
P10ACTION.

The wave folds. The whole roaring black wall of the fjord folds in on itself like a sheet being folded by invisible hands, corner over corner, edge into edge, smaller and smaller and smaller, until in his palm sits a cube the size of a fist: black water inside it, and in the water a tiny wave curling over forever.

PAGE 6
P11FLASH, inside him.

The same stormy night. He goes down the ladder into the hold of the ship with the black sails to look at what he steered into the wave for, and the hold is dark, and empty. Not stolen; gone. The memory has gone out of the picture like a coin out of a hand.

P12CLOSE, Vigolas

holding the wave-cube, soaked, a strange look on his face.

VIGOLAS
…What was in the hold?

(He can't remember. The thing he drowned his crew for is the price of saving this one.)

VIGOLAStucking the cube into his sash with the others
Greed keeps everything.
PAGE 7
P13CLOSE, the wet black stone

at his feet, where the wave was. A light is coming up out of it: emerald.

P14WIDE.

The crew, the trolls, even the Examiners on the near side who were about to drown, all staring at the green glow rising at the captain's feet.

KOMPISwhispering
…Captain.
PAGES 8–9 — SPLASH
P15SPLASH (double page). GREED · VOLUME I · NORTH.

On the wet stone of the Ring Halls lies a book: bound in deep emerald, the lines of its cover tooled in gold, glowing like a lamp in a cave. There's no chain, no shelf and no pedestal. It's simply there, at his feet, where he decided. On its cover, in letters of light: GREED · VOLUME I · NORTH.

Above it Vigolas stands soaked, the wave-cube in his sash, the brass Compass on his chest pointing steadily down the hall. From him, drawn for the reader in gold, threads run to every one of the crew, and every one of them is lit.

Behind them all, the kneeling giant's eyes reflect the green.

VIGOLAS
…Oh.
KOMPIS
That's your book.
PAGE 10
P16CLOSE, Vigolas

kneeling and opening it. The world goes emerald.

P17INSIDE THE BOOK.

The deck of the ship with the black sails, at night, in rain. The black sea. The wave, rising. His first crew on deck, drenched, faces he can't quite see. A page of emerald script hangs in the air before him:

GREED · VOLUME I · NORTH.

Decide what you value.

And under it, a second line writes itself while he watches:

You did.

PAGE 11
P18INSIDE THE BOOK.

Vigolas takes the wheel. The wave rises over the bow, and in the hold below the gold-glow is gone. He doesn't steer into the wave. He turns the wheel the other way, hard, laughing, rain in his teeth. On deck his drowned crew turns round, one after another, and gives him the two-finger salute.

P19INSIDE THE BOOK.

He looks down the hatch into the dark, empty hold.

VIGOLAS
I can't even remember what it was.

The page writes:

Then you know what it was worth.

And one last line, burning brighter than the rest:

More is not a quantity. It is a direction.

(Vigolas, laughing and crying at once, salutes them back.)

PAGE 12
P20OUT, the Ring Halls. One heartbeat has passed.

Vigolas rises. Emerald script crawls across his chest under the open coat, made of sentences, and the sentences move toward his heart and settle there over the Arena's cold brand. His eyes are emerald with gold rings, deeper than before.

P21GREED-SIGHT, NEW.

He looks at his crew, and over each of them glows a small emerald light on the one thing they value most. Over Kompis: the dog. Over Rougeina: the folded list in her bindings, and beside it, brighter, the crew. Over Smurjan: his own chest, where seventeen voices live. Over Kali's shadow: four bowls. Over the kneeling giant: a crumpled scrap of paper in a mouse's paws.

Then he looks up at Ingrith on Eken's shoulder, and the emerald light over her doesn't sit on her seal. It sits on a small brass plate in her breast pocket.

VIGOLAS
…Huh.
PAGE 13
P22GREED-SIGHT, WIDE: KEYSTONE.

He looks at the whole battle: every K-IV plate on every Examiner, every seal-dome, the three K-I stamps on his crew. Lines of value run across the hall like the ribs of a vaulted roof, and every one of them meets at one emerald point, like the stones of an arch meeting at the top. The First Seal, at Ingrith's belt.

VIGOLAS
…Every stamp you've made tonight hangs off that seal. That's what's holding all of you together.
VIGOLAS
Keystone.
P23CLOSE, the Compass.

To point at the keystone, the needle has to swing away from the crew. It does. And from Vigolas, every gold thread to his people goes grey.

KOMPISclutching his own chest
I can't feel him— Captain? CAPTAIN—
PAGE 14
P24ACTION.

In that heartbeat, while the captain is looking away, a K-IV Examiner on the near side swings a blazing rod at Kompis, a K-I tonight, and catches him across the ribs. CRACK. Kompis goes down. Vigolas doesn't feel it.

P25ACTION.

Vigolas, eyes on the keystone, palm out toward the giant's shoulder:

VIGOLAS
ERASE.

The First Seal is gone from Ingrith's belt: not destroyed, just no longer there. Its chain swings empty.

PAGE 15
P26WIDE.

Every stamp it held lapses at once. Kompis's gold script blazes back up his arms, Rougeina's silver and rose rings flare, and Smurjan's one shadow bursts into three. Across the hall, two hundred Examiner plates flicker and drop: K-IV → K-II MARKED. Seal-domes pop like soap bubbles, and the troll guards straighten.

P27CLOSE, Vigolas

the needle swinging home to the crew and the threads warming again. He turns, and sees Kompis on the floor holding his side.

VIGOLAS
…Buddy. I didn't— I couldn't feel you.
KOMPISwincing, a hand on Mingus
I felt you go. · Don't look away long.
VIGOLAS
Never long. Never.
PAGE 16
P28CLOSE, Eken.

The light in his eyes is puzzled, a year emptier than this morning.

EKEN
…Mouse.

The grey mouse holds up the crumpled paper. Under EKEN and BREAD-MAN, in fresh, tiny, careful letters: FRIENDS. THE ONE WHO DIDN'T HIT YOU. THE DOG HAS YOUR TOOTH.

EKEN
…Friends.
P29CLOSE, Eken

turning his great head, very slowly, toward the far side, where the Order's war-engines stand in a line down the deep road and the Examiners are regrouping.

EKEN
…Captain. … I have one … for them.
EKEN
…Three hundred years old.
PAGE 17
P30ACTION: THE ENGINE RING.

On the giant's chest the darkest ring of all, a black band out among the younger rings near the bark, cracks, KRRAAAK, and out of his back, past the nine axes, leaves a blow in the exact shape of a colossal bronze-headed war-engine, travelling at war-engine speed. It hits the Order's siege lines. Rams fold, seal-heads shatter, and two hundred Examiners are thrown back up the deep road like leaves in a gale.

P31CLOSE, Eken.

The light in his eyes dims a little more.

EKEN
…Mouse. … What year … is it?
PAGE 18 — THE HOOK
P32WIDE.

High above the giant, in the roof of the Ring Halls, a narrow shaft cut by trolls long ago so the sun could touch him once a day. Down it, now, comes dawn: one beam of morning light falling onto the ferns on Eken's head. On his shoulder, alone, stands Ingrith. Her belt is empty, her army gone, her lenses cracked. She is holding nothing but her measuring tape.

P33FINAL PANEL, close.

A blink of silver-rose. Rougeina is suddenly standing beside her on the giant's shoulder, in the light from the shaft, barefoot, eight blades on her back.

ROUGEINA
Stand down.
