Chapter 141

The Bread-Carrier
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, the Ring Halls, the Library side of the giant.

Quiet. Eken kneels like a hill. At his knee, the sleeping king on his shield, crown crooked, snoring, the crow asleep on his chest. Six troll guards sit in a ring. Old Stav leans back against the bark with the king-staff across his lap, and the Library mice nibble crumbs out of his bread basket.

P2CLOSE, Stav

talking up at the bark face, easy, the way you talk to an old neighbour.

STAV
She'd have liked you, Ulla. She liked anything that didn't move much.
EKEN
…Who.
STAV
Ulla. The one I asked. To marry me. Every spring. Sixty years.
EKEN
…And.
STAV
She said I snored.
EKENvery, very long pause
…You do.
PAGE 2
P3CLOSE, Stav

laughing silently, then turning to the sleeping heir and gently straightening the crooked crown. It slides crooked again at once.

STAV
You slept through your own naming, you know. Whole valley singing, and you snoring in the middle of it. Ulla said, "That's a king."
P4CLOSE, Stav

softer, his huge hand resting on the edge of the shield.

STAV
She'd be so angry how lazy you are. · And so proud.
PAGE 3
P5A SOUND.

From the far side of the giant: boots, many of them. A flat brass horn. White light flickering along the rubbings on the walls. Eken's axe-wound eyes brighten.

EKEN
Hit. … Me.
P6CUT, the far side.

Ingrith, one lens cracked, the First Seal at her belt, at the head of an army re-certified at sunset: EXAMINER · K-IV SHAPED (certified · until sunrise) ×200, and behind them the Order's war-engines, rams with bronze seal-heads dragged down the deep road on rollers. She looks up at the kneeling giant with her measuring tape in hand.

INGRITH
Nobody strikes it. The archives are very clear. Do not engage. Do not strike. It keeps. (She points the tape at the ridge of handles bristling along his back.) Use the handles.
PAGE 4
P7ACTION.

Examiners climb the axes in Eken's back like the rungs of a ladder, boots on bark, hand over hand up nine old axe-handles, a sword-hilt, a spear-shaft.

EKEN
…No.
EKEN
…Off.
EKENhis balloon smaller every time
…Please.

He doesn't move. He has never struck first.

P8ACTION.

Over his shoulders they come, dropping down onto the near side. The six troll guards rise. Stav gets to his feet with the king-staff. On Eken's shoulder stands the old woman with bone spectacles, her ledger chain wrapped round her fist, her rod blazing white:

CHIEF EXAMINER · K-IV SHAPED (certified · until sunrise) · Scalelist #7,742

PAGE 5
P9ACTION, a run of fast panels.

The troll guards against the K-IV Examiners: seal-domes drop and two guards freeze, paperwork. A third guard gets his horn to his lips and blows: short, sharp, the alarm. A rod knocks it out of his hand.

P10ACTION.

Stav, unpowered, four hundred years old, swings the king-staff like an oar and lays an Examiner flat across the floor. Up on Eken's other shoulder Ingrith watches through her lenses: INGRITH'S POV, a faceless troll-shape with a plate, K-I.

INGRITH
Nobody. Again.
PAGE 6
P11CUT, the Library galleries.

The crew running: down the spiral, through the root gallery, into the passage, Rougeina Swapping ahead with every stride, and Mingus far out in front, ears flat, a gold streak.

KOMPIS
Faster—
P12CLOSE, the passage ahead.

Eken's raised arm. Torchlight and white rod-light flickering beyond it.

VIGOLAS
STAV!
PAGE 7
P13CLOSE, the Chief Examiner

crouched on Eken's shoulder directly above the sleeping king, rod raised and blazing with binding script.

CHIEF EXAMINER
The heir has no size while he waits. Very well. (She leaps.) I don't need to measure him to hit him.
P14CLOSE, Stav

looking up.

P15ACTION.

The blazing rod comes down past Eken's shoulder and glances off the bark, THONK. On the giant's chest, one new thin ring lights up green. The rest of the blow keeps falling, straight down at the shield.

P16ACTION.

Stav throws himself over the shield, over the sleeping heir, huge old arms spread wide, the way Ulla once held up a hull.

PAGES 9–10 — SPLASH
P17SPLASH (double page). THE BREAD-CARRIER.

An old troll over a sleeping king. Stav's broad back bent like a roof over the shield, the blazing rod landing across it, white light cracking out across the Ring Halls. Beneath him, untouched: the sleeping half-troll, the crooked iron crown, his grandmother's scarf, the crow's wide eyes. The bread basket tips and spills its loaves across the stone. Above them the kneeling giant, his eyes blazing. And at the very edge of the frame, bursting out from under Eken's raised arm one heartbeat too late: the crew. Kompis's hand reaching. Mingus in mid-leap. Vigolas's face.

KRRUNNCH.
PAGE 11
P18CLOSE, the Chief Examiner

landing in a crouch, turning, raising the rod again. Behind her, the voice of a falling tree:

EKEN
I. … Remember. … You.
P19CLOSE, Eken

the new green ring on his chest blazing.

EKEN
…This ring … is this year. … If I break it … I forget … this year. … You. … The crew. … The bread-man's … last Tuesday.
EKEN
…Here. … It. … Is.

KRRAAK. The ring cracks, light pours out, and the blow leaves the giant in the exact shape of a brass rod and strikes the Chief Examiner wherever she stands. She's hurled the length of the Ring Halls, rod shattered, ledger chain snapping, and she doesn't get up.

PAGE 12
P20WIDE.

The crew skids to its knees around the shield. Smurjan gets there first and gathers the old troll into his scarred arms, carefully, the way you'd lift a keel. Kompis, eyes gold: hundreds of warm threads still on Stav, and the thick old one running off into nothing, blazing now.

P21CLOSE, Stav

grey-faced, his small bright eyes finding Kompis.

STAV
…The king…?
KOMPIS
Asleep. Not a scratch on him.
STAV
…Good. Good. (the ghost of a laugh) He never could stay awake… for the important bits.
PAGE 13
P22CLOSE, Stav and Smurjan.
STAV
Your hands… still burned?
SMURJANhis voice breaking
Still burned.
STAV
Good. Bark remembers…
P23CLOSE, Stav and Kompis.
STAV
The thread… Ulla's…
KOMPIStears running into his beard
It's pulling. Hard.
STAV
…Spring, then. I'll ask her again.
PAGE 14
P24CLOSE, Smurjan.

His mouth opens, and the voice that comes out isn't his. It isn't Kali's, or Bakasura's. It's big and warm and full of laughter, a voice the crew has heard only a handful of times since the night she held the jaws open: Marka's.

MARKA
…Thank you for my boat.

(Smurjan's eyes go wide. In his shadow, for once, Kali says nothing at all.)

P25CLOSE, Stav

smiling up at a voice he never met and built a ship for anyway.

STAV
…She floats well. Your boat.
P26CLOSE, Stav's hand

sliding slowly off the edge of the shield, coming to rest against the sleeping king's enormous felt slipper. He's gone.

PAGE 15
P27CLOSE, Eken

looking down, the light in his eyes dimmer, puzzled.

EKEN
…Mouse.

A grey mouse scurries down his arm with the crumpled paper.

EKEN
…Who … is the old one … on the floor.
P28CLOSE, the mouse

looking at the paper, at BREAD-MAN, and then, with a stub of pencil bigger than its arm, very slowly writing something more.

PAGE 16
P29WIDE.

The crew kneels in a ring around the shield. Nobody moves. Vigolas's fists shake on his knees. Rougeina has her face turned away. Mingus lies down with his chin on Stav's arm.

On Eken's shoulder, Ingrith adjusts her cracked lens. Through it the crew is a ring of faceless plates, all perfectly, beautifully still.

INGRITH
Grief holds very still. Thank you.
P30ACTION.

KLANG. KLANG. KLANG. Three door-sized bronze seals drop out of the air:

KOMPIS · K-I UNMARKED (certified · until sunrise)

ROUGEINA · K-I UNMARKED (certified · until sunrise)

SMURJAN · K-I UNMARKED (certified · until sunrise)

Kompis's gold script dims to nothing. Rougeina's silver and rose rings go cold. Smurjan's three shadows shrink to one. A fourth seal drops on Vigolas and slides off. Nothing drops on the dog.

PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P31CUT, the far side.

Ingrith signals, and the Order's war-engines swing their bronze seal-heads up, at the dripping ceiling above the giant. BOOM. BOOM. Cracks race across the black rock.

EXAMINERon the near side, panicking
Architect, we're still on this side!
INGRITH
You're K-twos. I'll certify more.
P32FINAL PANEL, wide.

The roof of the Ring Halls splits, and the fjord comes down: black water bursting through the stone above the kneeling giant, pouring past his shoulders and rolling down the corridor in a wave as tall as a house, toward the crew, the sleeping king, the old troll on the floor and the Library door beyond. In front of it all, Vigolas gets to his feet. On the cord round his neck the brass Compass spins and spins and spins.
