Chapter 116
The iron door glows cherry-red. Black oil drips under it and smokes on the stone. The waiting souls on the racks shrink back, whining.
weapons up, facing the door. Kompis in front with Ivar on his back and Fru Gnista in his hand. Behind him in the corner, the long silent rifle points steadily at the door. It hasn't moved since it turned.
glancing back at it. Eyes gold. Inside the plain dark wood and blackened steel, a soul: small, very still, a figure sitting cross-legged with a cloth wrapped over its mouth.
(No soul-text. Nothing.)
quietly.
fizzing in Kompis's hand.
walking slowly over to the silent rifle, Mingus at his heel. He doesn't reach for it. He looks.
No soul-text. He reads the rifle like he read the crew in Katriel's fog: how it's angled, not at the door's centre but at the hinge, where a man would step through; the barrel perfectly still; the strap hanging toward him, just slightly, the way a person leans when they want to be asked.
still cross-legged, cloth over its mouth. It lifts one hand and touches two fingers to its own brow: a salute. Yes.
lifting the long rifle off its rack. It's light, perfectly balanced, cold, and then, slowly, warm.
The vault door bursts inward in a gush of black oil and heat. Melters pour through behind a wave of it. At their centre, Slagg, bloodied from yesterday and not caring, gauntlets dripping, and in one hand the black silent pistol: Lilla Ulv, quenched.
calm.
Malm charges like a landslide, fists swinging, and the Melters' oil-poles keep him at bay.
Vigolas and Smurjan hit the flank, lightning and Triple Pulse.
Rougeina Swaps with sparks from Fru Gnista's second firework.
The Melters dunk two more waiting swords. Hiss. Two lights go out.
raising quenched Lilla Ulv at Malm's back, perfectly steady, no hesitation. A man who feels nothing never hesitates.
raising Tyst. Eyes grey. Subtick. The world freezes.
A thousand versions of the shot. In most of them, the bullet is heard: the crack echoes, Slagg turns, and the oil-gauntlet comes up to catch it the way it caught Lilla Ulv. In one version, there's no sound at all.
Kompis fires. The long rifle bucks against his shoulder, and there is no sound. The panel is drawn completely silent: no SFX, no lines, no crack. Just a thin dark streak across the vault, faster than anything, and at the end of it Slagg's left gauntlet is torn off his hand in a spray of black oil, spinning away into a cauldron.
Slagg's bare hand, pale and scarred, hangs in the air. Behind him on its rack, the silent soul in the rifle sits cross-legged with the cloth over its mouth, and nods once.
looking at his bare hand. No pain on his face. No anger. Nothing.
lowering Tyst, nose bleeding.
Slagg backs out of the vault with his one gauntlet and quenched Lilla Ulv held up like a hostage. The Melters retreat around him, dragging cauldrons.
They're gone. Oil on the floor. Two more quenched swords. The vault quiet except for whimpering racks.
sitting on the vault floor with three guns: Ivar across his back, Fru Gnista in his lap, Tyst across his knees. The fourth loop on his bandolier, Lilla Ulv's, is empty. So is the fifth.
silent, lifting a hand and placing it, very gently, flat on Kompis's knee. I know.
rising from his back, arms folded, looking out of the vault toward the red glow of the lava-lake.
sitting down heavily beside them, humming Glöd's three notes.
far below the mountain: a crater of molten rock glowing like a sunrise. On its rim the Melters build a platform over the lava, and a cauldron of black oil steams beside a crucible for melting. Forge-folk gather on the slopes, forced to watch.
On a post above the crucible hangs a small black pistol on a chain, silent, swinging gently over the lava's glow. Slagg stands beside it with a pocket watch.
