Chapter 39
Vigolas and Smurjan trading blows on the heaving black water: lightning against open hands.
hard across the storm:
SIN COUNTS.
WRATH, AWAKE. GREED, UNREAD.
THE FIELD FAVOURS WRATH.
The storm turns. The wind swings round behind Smurjan like a hand on his back. The lightning curves away from him and toward Vigolas. The sea flattens under Smurjan's feet and heaves under Vigolas's.
A lightning bolt that Vigolas himself threw bends mid-air like a hooked fish, turns around and hits him.
uneasy, looking up at a storm that obeys him without being asked.
Smurjan lets Kali loose, for the match. She spins out of his shadow across the water, sickle flashing, and Vigolas barely gets a lightning-wrapped forearm up in time. Black glass rakes sparks off green light.
She inhales, reaching for his sin, and gets nothing. A hole. No Ledger line.
In her surprise, Vigolas catches her wrist and drives green lightning down her arm.
Burned black from fingertips to elbow, smoking. She stumbles back, staring at it.
It doesn't grow back.
looking at the useless arm, then at Smurjan. For the first time, she's scared.
reaching for her. She melts back into his shadow, cradling the arm, and inside his chest the whispering crowd of the consumed goes silent.
panting, looking at his own fist, then at Smurjan.
The grey woman stands on the rail, and the cone of silence covers the whole ship. The crew is moving, shouting, and nothing comes out. Drekk is yelling something at Rougeina. Rougeina yells something back. Neither hears.
LÄRKA · K-III TESTED · Scalelist #6,617 · the Quiet · Bastion Five
Short white hair, a pale calm face, eyes that never seem to focus on anything near. She doesn't speak. She hasn't heard a sound in her life.
Rougeina Swaps behind Lärka, the Swap still works; this silence takes heartbeats, not places, and swings. Lärka steps aside without looking. She doesn't need to hear things coming. She has never once heard anything coming. She feels it.
Drekk swings a belaying pin at Lärka's back, shouting a warning to Rougeina that nobody hears, and hits Rougeina instead, who has just Swapped into exactly that spot.
on the deck, holding her head, glaring up at a horrified Drekk. Both of them mouthing furious silent words at each other.
(No balloons. Two very angry faces.)
flat on his back, eyes open, thinking hard. He writes a word in the air with a fingertip, not a macro, just letters, glowing faintly violet so the others can read:
SHE'S HERE FOR KOMPIS.
reading it. His hand is still on Mingus's head, still feeling nothing. He takes a breath.
He lifts Ivar anyway.
The storm-favoured Smurjan comes at Vigolas carefully now. Precise. Every strike exactly placed. A palm to the ribs: crack. A heel to the knee. Vigolas goes down on one knee on the heaving water.
standing over him. His third eye glows crimson along its edge, the Wrath-mark awake.
spitting blood, grinning.
Smurjan raises one hand, and the whole storm rises behind him: every lightning bolt in the sky bending toward his palm, the black sea lifting into a second wave behind him, taller than the first, the wind screaming. He stands at the centre like a conductor holding a whole orchestra on one breath.
In the foreground, tiny, on one knee on the water, Vigolas looks up at it with green lightning flickering weakly in one hand.
In the rows of the dead, the cabin boy from the Starling has stepped one pace forward.
the storm poised behind him, his face pained.
Kompis fires Ivar at Lärka. No Subtick. Just aim. Ivar's ghost, grim, steadies the barrel.
Lärka feels the shot coming and tilts her head an inch. The bullet passes through the space where her ear was.
She turns toward Kompis for the first time, and smiles a little, the way you smile at a child who is trying very hard.
She walks toward him across the silent deck. Slow. Unhurried. The cone of silence moves with her.
backing up against the mast. Mingus stands in front of him, hackles up, barking soundlessly at the woman, a dog, only a dog, as big as his love and no bigger.
along the bottom of the panel. Flat. A straight, dead line.
on Mingus's back. The dog is warm. The dog is breathing. And Kompis cannot feel his heart.
Lärka stops one step in front of Kompis. She raises one pale hand toward his chest, almost gently, the way you'd reach to switch off a light.
Vigolas, on one knee before Smurjan's storm, opens his hand. The weak green lightning in it goes still. He is looking past Smurjan, past the dead, at the second wave rising behind them all.
