Chapter 234
on the Upp Igen's bow: SALVAGE: OURS, BY LAW. CERTIFIED. Ingrith's cold square seal.
Both crews on the floating Upp Igen and the reef beside her. A hundred Wreckers on the rocks, poles raised, chanting. Rasp on the bow with his hammer. And the law pressing: the deck of the Upp Igen tilting toward the rocks on its own, as if the sea itself were obeying.
both hands on her ash staff, the chalk circle round the hatch flickering, its edge being pushed inward an inch at a time.
on the reef, wide awake, explaining it grimly to Vigolas.
letting go of the Upp Igen's wheel. Straightening his clean grey coat. Walking, very calmly, to the bow, past Rasp, and laying one hand flat on the brass plaque.
quiet, certain.
rising. Palm out. Toward the plaque, toward the chanting Wreckers, toward the law itself.
And everything stops. Not like Isa's hold, where time stands still. Here the world keeps moving, but the law stops: the Upp Igen stops tilting toward the rocks; Emma's circle stops shrinking; the Wreckers' chant falters mid-word, as if they'd forgotten the end of it.
a balance of pale light, two pans hanging from a beam of nothing. In one pan, small and brass and heavy, the plaque's words: OURS, BY LAW. In the other, glowing, his own name in plain letters: DANIEL.
appalled.
grinning with brass teeth, hefting his hammer.
on his distant jetty, across the dark water, his narrowed eyes turned toward them, his foghorn voice carrying.
turning to his Wreckers, pointing his hammer at Daniel.
A hundred Wreckers charging from every rock at once, all of them at one man with his hand in the air on the bow of a ship.
Krydog planting himself in front of Daniel, taking every blow aimed at the hand: knocked down, up; down, up; a patch's worth of hooks in a minute. "UPP IGEN!"
Vigolas beside him, Emerald Knuckles, laughing: "Is he always like this?" / "Every time!"
Roffe and Smurjan holding the bow rail, ladle and Triple Pulse, side by side.
Perne, colourless still, calling every Wrecker who gets near the bow: "Left. Behind. Above." Kompis and Bror shoving them off as she calls them.
Isa holding the reef-waves the Wreckers ride in on, …ba—, while Tihi stands beside her with both hands clamped over her own mouth.
Rougeina Swapping from lantern to lantern, snuffing them, so the Wreckers fight half-blind.
Flexsnus, bending Daniel's tired arm one notch lighter every minute: "Not illegal. Just kind."
through all of it, standing on the bow, hand raised, perfectly still, sweat running down his face, arm shaking. Never lowering it.
(The clock in the corner: 1:20.)
Rasp himself breaking through, hammer swinging for Daniel's raised wrist, and Emma, stepping out of her own circle (she can't, the circle drops) to throw herself between them, ash staff up, taking the hammer on the staff's iron ring.
on the Marka, ears up, looking at the horizon, then barking: a long, glad bark. Something's coming.
(The clock in the corner: 0:00.)
The Beam comes round. A great white-gold blade of light sweeping across the dark sea from the lighthouse, lighting the reef, the wreck, the hundred Wreckers frozen mid-swing, the two crews holding the bow, and at the bow's point, a quiet man in a clean grey coat with his hand raised and shaking, a balance of pale light hanging over his palm.
And in the Beam, everything seen: the plaque's brass words, his name in the other pan, the truth of who is a thief and who is a ship. The balance tips.
The pan with OURS, BY LAW rising, light as a feather. The pan with DANIEL sinking, heavy as truth.
And the brass plaque on the hull cracking down the middle, Ingrith's cold seal splitting in two.
falling from the hull into the black sea in two halves, sinking.
All round the Mouth, on every rock, every salvage plaque the Wreckers ever nailed to every wreck cracking at once, two hundred years of stolen ships and stolen souls, and on the rocks, whole Wrecker gangs dropping their poles in confusion.
finally lowering his hand, his arm dropping like a dead weight, and sitting down on the bow, white, shaking. Krydog catching him by the shoulders.
standing on the reef, looking at the quiet man who just put his name on the scales for a ship. Something unreadable on her face.
to Krydog, very impressed.
The Wreckers fleeing back across the rocks into the dark. Rasp, last, backing away, his brass teeth bared.
on his jetty, suddenly turning his whole body toward the wreck-yard on the far rocks, the way a lamp turns, his narrowed eyes going wide.
on the far rocks: a graveyard of stolen hulls, lit by a hundred hanging lanterns. And among them, a thin woman in rags of black sailcloth, sitting on a broken figurehead, holding a lantern up to her face like a cup.
She eats it. The whole lantern, flame and all, swallowed in one bite, a glow sliding down her throat. And in that instant every lantern in the yard goes out at once, and the far rocks go black. In the dark, two eyes with a hollow glow in them, and a soft, hungry voice:
