Chapter 93
No lines anywhere. Kali bursts out of Smurjan's shadow, Bakasura rises behind her, Smurjan lets the serpent go, Rougeina is already mid-Swap, and Kompis is on one knee firing.
Rougeina Swaps with a hinge on Wendlan's bench, blink, and a door is waiting under her landing before she lands. Gone.
Kompis's wolf-cub bullet runs into a door and comes leaping out of another one behind Vigolas. Vigolas catches it in his free left hand like a ball.
Veyra, her Threshold gone, can move. The crystal spurs crack loose from the pillar. She wrenches her stake out of the stone (dead iron now, but heavy and sharp) and swings it like a spear at Vigolas's clenched right fist, to smash it open.
An open palm catches the stake an inch from the fist. Smurjan, stepped in from nowhere.
Veyra against Smurjan: crystal fists and a spear of iron against a man who moves half an inch at a time, the serpent lashing round both of them.
Wendlan thinks, and a frame unfolds around Vigolas's clenched fist. Suddenly his right hand, up to the wrist, is somewhere else. Cut-in: a smoking fist hanging in the white glare of Helios. Wendlan leans on the frame's edges, folding them in like a vice.
braced, teeth gritted, the frame grinding on his wrist.
He rips the fist back out of the door, still shut, smoke pouring from between his fingers.
counting with his hand on Mingus.
sitting bolt upright on the stone, eyes blazing violet, the crow tumbling off his chest.
looking at Wendlan, thinking faster than he ever moves.
landing hard from another bounce, panting, blades out.
roaring across the Yard.
Bakasura rises out of Smurjan's shadow, colossal, amber-eyed, and closes his jaws on a whole white iron frame, sky and all.
crack. A rib. He doubles over, gasping.
chewing thoughtfully.
One shot, lived a thousand times, until Kompis finds the line: a single gold path that runs through five hinges in a row.
Colour. The wolf cub runs the line, bonk bonk bonk bonk bonk, five frames snapping shut one after another like dominoes.
Cut-in: Wendlan's good right hand, fingers bending.
Vigolas smashes a frame flat with his left Emerald Knuckle, then raises his open left hand at a second one.
He punches it instead.
staggering upright. White cracks of light are running across his skin along the lines of his whole network, his face and neck and arms covered in a glowing map of every gate in the world, and each new crack is a broken bone.
Veyra, still fighting Smurjan, screams across the Yard.
on one knee, through his teeth, looking at his doors.
Smurjan's fight with Veyra has carried them to the edge of the terrace, and up over the top step pours a flood of Sentinels, lanterns swinging, chains of light ready.
Kali springs out of Smurjan's shadow and plants herself on the top step, one arm and one black-glass sickle against the whole stair.
She holds. Sickle flashing, braid whipping, she cuts chains, kicks helmets, shoves Sentinels back down the steps three at a time.
getting to his feet, which he almost never does in a fight. He yawns enormously and cracks his neck.
writing in the air in glowing violet letters:
MACRO : RUST = 1 YARD
Every white iron frame in the Gate Yard rusts in a single heartbeat.
A hundred doors to nine realms turn red-brown all at once, bubbling and flaking, their hinges crumbling. They slam shut one after another, BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM, a hundred skies going out like windows shuttered in a storm. Rust blows across the terrace like red snow. Only the Sea Frame at the edge stands untouched, still full of stars.
In the centre of it all, Wendlan throws his head back and screams, every crack on his skin blazing white at once, his whole network breaking in one heartbeat.
And one step behind his left shoulder, the silver-rose phantom trail she left there blooms. Out of it, swapped with her own afterimage, steps Rougeina: crimson hair streaming, eight blades fanned open, rose script blazing down her arm.
In a hundred broken bones he never felt the itch. But he sees her.
He thinks, and a fresh white frame unfolds under his own feet to drop him away, anywhere, out of reach.
They go still: unblinking, lidless, ringed by a halo of tiny frozen droplets. The look of a man nobody else alive remembers.
The rose script of the Envy Codex blazes. For one strike she wears the skill of someone she carries: Anchor-Sight. Nothing she looks at can change its place.
The door opens under Wendlan's feet, and he doesn't fall. He stands on the open door as if on glass, held in her gaze.
The wind roaring, rust falling like red snow between them.
looking past her, up at the open sky. The only Architect who loves the weather. The wind in his grey hair, the goggles on his forehead, a small smile.
The wind takes the chalk dust off his hands in a long white streamer across the rusted Yard and away over the clouds. In the foreground, Rougeina's back, blades lowered. On the stone at her feet, a pair of brass goggles.
A small square seal of white light lifts off the back of a splinted hand like a leaf, still glowing faintly, and drifts up into the night toward the glass dome of the Council Hall on the lower peak. As it drifts, the Sea Frame flickers in time with it, and so does every door left in the world.
standing in the red snow, blinking.
Veyra stands frozen by the stair-head, her fist still raised at Smurjan, tears running down her face that she doesn't understand. From her chest runs the thickest gold thread she has, twenty years thick, out across the Yard… and it ends in the air, tied to nothing.
still counting, hand on Mingus.
Vigolas's fist tears open. The white knot rips out of his blistered palm and streaks across the Yard, back into Veyra's chest. She staggers. Her Threshold is home.
swaying, eyelids crashing down, pointing at the little light drifting toward the Council Hall.
spinning round toward the terrace's edge.
Kali, at the top of the stairs, kicks one last Sentinel down them.
She dives back into Smurjan's shadow as he runs past. Smurjan scoops the collapsing Trollmage over one shoulder like a sack of flour. The panther bounds ahead. Mingus runs at Kompis's heel.
Veyra stands alone by the stair-head in the red snow, tears on her face. Her serpent rises. One line drawn across the terrace and the crew would never reach the Sea Frame. Kompis looks at her as he runs past.
on her stake. She doesn't drive it. Beside her, the serpent slowly lowers its head.
The crew leaps into the Sea Frame, the starlit Current far, far below on the other side. Across the sky, small and bright, the drifting Signet touches down on the glass dome.
Mid-crossing, the Sea Frame goes black. Rougeina dives last, and the dead frame snaps shut on the tip of her whipping crimson tail of hair. A lock of crimson hair drifts down through the red snow and lands on the rusted stone, at Veyra's feet.
