Chapter 210
The long stair from the Bastion climbing up the mountain toward the white towers of Glasheim, gleaming in the clouds. The floating Archive above it all. And the crew climbing, with Oswin at their head, his star-lantern on its pole.
lifting the lantern. Its wheeling star-map sliding over each member of the crew. He plucks a star out of the light with two long fingers for each of them, one, two, three, and sets it somewhere else on the map.
Two Sentinels on guard, freed of their collars, still serving. The crew walking straight past them, an arm's length away. The Sentinels' eyes slide over the crew, across them, past them, as if looking for something they've forgotten.
delighted, waving his hand in a Sentinel's face. Nothing.
trotting past the Sentinels, wagging, and bumping one's knee with his nose. The Sentinel looks down and sees a dog, and nothing else.
(Mingus was never filed. There's nothing to misfile. He's just a dog.)
pausing on the stair, his hand going to his temple, a strange blank look crossing his face.
A vast circular corridor beneath the floating Archive, its walls alive with a moving star-map: every record in the world, a star, wheeling slowly. Shelves to the ceiling. And along the shelves, moving silently, putting things back: grey clerks.

turning as one toward the crew, whom they can't see, but they can see the gaps: the places on the star-map where nine stars are where they shouldn't be.
Being shelved.
A Shelver lays a grey hand on Smurjan's arm, and he slides, his body being put back, dragged along the corridor toward a great drawer marked TRINITY · SPLIT · CASE CLOSED. Kali screaming from his shadow.
Another takes Isa's wrist, returning her toward a drawer marked STILLA · ISLAND · DO NOT DISTURB.
Rougeina being steered toward a drawer marked ASSET · ROUTING STUDY, her old file, and her face goes white with fury.
Kompis, drawn backwards toward a drawer marked NURSERY · INTAKE K.
Bror's shove, BRA-DOOM, blows the drawer marked NURSERY off its runners.
Vigolas gets grabbed by a Shelver and nothing happens. The Shelver tries to shelve him, looks at the star-map for his place, and finds no star where his should be: Oswin's filed it somewhere else, and no shelf in the Ring would fit it anyway.
Vigolas, unshelvable, running down the corridor tearing grey hands off his crew one by one, while Oswin raises his lantern and plucks stars, moving the crew's places back and forth faster than the Shelvers can read them.
Trollmage, yawning, writes in the air:
MACRO : SHELF = FULL
(Every drawer in the corridor slams shut at once. Nothing more can be filed anywhere.)
The Shelvers standing still in the corridor, holding grey hands out with nothing in them, confused, blinking at shelves that won't open. The crew running past them toward a spiral stair going down.
A well of pages spiralling down into the heart of the mountain, a stair winding round its walls, the walls lined with books. Lit only by unopened books that glow faintly on their shelves. At the very bottom, far below, a tiny lamp, and under it, a single desk.
stopping at the top of the stair, very tired.
The bottom of the Scriptorium well. A pool of lamplight. An enormous open book, as big as a bed, lying across a desk carved from the mountain's own stone. And under it, almost lost under it, a tiny, ancient man: his long white beard tucked into his belt, robes the colour of old vellum, his fingers black with ink to the second knuckle, running slowly over the names on the page. His eyes are milk-white. He doesn't look up.
Around him in the dark, the walls rising up and up, every book on them glowing faintly, and on every page in every book, in the same hand, names.
HJALMAR · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect One, Keeper of the First Ledger
his inked fingers stopping on a line. He speaks without raising his head, in an old, dry voice that sounds like a page turning.
walking past the others, pulling out the one chair on the far side of his desk, and sitting down across from the First Chair.
across the giant open book. The assassin with eight blades. The oldest Architect, blind.
His milk-white eyes, unmoving. His inked hand flat on the page. A very long silence. He says nothing. He doesn't move.
watching him. Watching the silence. Understanding that the silence is an answer of its own kind: someone he won't give up.
(Silence.)
(Silence. His inked fingers, very slightly, tremble.)
standing up. Her hand on a blade. Every Architect she's ever sat across from, she's killed. She looks at the tiny blind old man for a long moment.
And she takes her hand off the blade.
lifting his head for the first time, his blind eyes turned toward the sound of her voice.
his inked fingers moving to a different page of the great book, an old page, very old, and running down it. He speaks to the crew without looking up.
holding up his lantern, a single star rising in the map, far off at its very edge, alone.
The crew climbing back up the spiral stair, small and far above, lit by the glowing books. Hjalmar alone at the bottom under his enormous book.
Hjalmar, alone in the lamplight, lifting his milk-white face toward the frieze carved round the top of the well: eleven carved figures and one black bar. His voice barely a whisper.
