Chapter 8

The Weight Of Thirty-Seven
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, troll country, a fjord at sunset.

A comic, wonderful image: four enormous Brygdar trolls, moss-backed and gentle, carry the Kettle down a mountain path on their shoulders like a coffin made of love, lowering it carefully into the fjord. Drekk runs alongside them, fussing.

DREKK
Gently! GENTLY! She's old!
TROLLdeep, kind
So are we.
P2MID.

Trollmage, still on Marka's back, raises one lazy hand to the trolls in thanks. One of them bows to him, deeply.

KOMPIS
…Why did a troll just bow to you?
TROLLMAGE
Family thing. Ask me when I'm more awake.
PAGE 2
P3NIGHT, the Kettle at anchor in the fjord.

The crew sits around the little iron stove on deck. Warm light. Steam from a pot. Drekk polishes the boat's dented brass bell like it's a crown.

DREKK
She's ugly. She's slow. She leaks when it rains and when it doesn't.
DREKK
She's mine.
MARKAmouth full
She's ours.
DREKKgrumbling, pleased
…She's ours.
P4CLOSE, Mingus

asleep against the stove, paws twitching, dreaming.

PAGE 3
P5INTERIOR, the hold, lantern-lit.

Vigolas sits alone on a crate. He has laid the shards out on a blanket in rows, glowing softly like a city seen from a mountain at night.

VIGOLAScounting under his breath
…thirty-five, thirty-six, thirty-seven.
VIGOLAS
Thirty-seven. One went home.
P6CLOSE, his hand

hovering over the shards. He touches one.

PAGES 4–5 — WHAT THE SHARDS HOLD
P7FLASH-PANELS, each a glimpse, each a different art texture, like opening a door on someone else's life.

(a) The library index: a spiral mountain turned inside out, seventy-seven sleeping lights.

(b) A body splitting in three: a single man screaming as his shadow tears into three shapes, and behind them, half hidden, a fourth silhouette glowing silver, watching.

(c) A city's routing ledger: ten thousand souls poured into the wrong bodies, an old woman in a soldier's frame, a child in an old man's, all signed in neat silver ink.

(d) A shard that shows nothing. Black. Cold. When he touches it, his fingertip goes grey for a moment, as if it forgot it was a finger.

P8CLOSE, Vigolas

pulling his hand back from the black shard, flexing his grey fingertip until the colour returns.

VIGOLAS
…Okay. Not you.
P9CLOSE, Vigolas

looking over the whole field of glowing lives. Quiet. The most honest he has been.

VIGOLASnarration box
Everyone in the world wants one of these. So I wanted all of them.
VIGOLASnarration box
Greed is not the wanting. It is the not stopping.
PAGE 6
P10MID.

Kompis comes down the ladder with two bowls of stew and sits beside him.

KOMPIS
Why'd you take all of them? Really.
VIGOLAS
Because if everybody's fighting over one…
VIGOLAS
…nobody's fighting over me.
P11CLOSE, Vigolas

grinning, hiding something true behind it.

VIGOLAS
Also, I should have taken forty.
P12CLOSE, Kompis

laughing into his stew. Then his eyes narrow over the bowl, past Vigolas.

PAGE 7
P13WIDE, the deck above, seen through the hatch.

The crew at the stove. At the stern, alone, sits Ysel. In the stove's light, her shadow stretches across the deck toward the hatch, while she sits perfectly still.

P14CLOSE, Mingus

awake, on his feet, lips pulled back. For the first time in the story, he growls.

grrrrrrrrr
PAGE 8
P15THE HOLD.

The lantern gutters. A shadow slides down the ladder by itself: a long black human shape with no face, no edges and no thickness, like a hole cut in the world.

P16ACTION.

It reaches for the coat on the crate with long flat fingers.

VIGOLASkicking the crate away
HEY. That's taken.
P17POV, Greed-sight.

Everything in the hold glows by value: the shards blaze, the lantern is copper, Kompis is warm gold.

The shadow is nothing. Not grey, not dull. Absent. Greed-sight slides off it as if the eye refused it.

VIGOLAS
…What are you?
PAGES 9–10 — THE FIGHT IN THE HOLD
P18ACTION.

Vigolas swings the lantern. It passes through the shadow and smashes against the hull. Oil spreads and catches.

P19ACTION.

Kompis fires Ivar point-blank. The bullet goes through and punches out the far wall. Water spits in.

IVAR
It's not THERE, boy!
P20ACTION.

The shadow wraps around Vigolas's arm. Where it touches, his sleeve, his skin and the colour of him go grey, and a whole memory starts to drain out of his eyes. A flash panel, fading: his mother's hands braiding a rope.

VIGOLAS
Get— OFF—
P21ACTION.

Mingus barrels down the ladder, still just a dog, and slams into Vigolas's legs, knocking him out of the shadow's grip. The shadow's fingers close on empty air.

PAGE 11
P22DECK.

Ysel stands up at the stern. For the first time she lowers her hood.

Half of her face is a young woman's, and the other half is fading: grey, translucent at the edges, like a photograph left too long in the sun. Where her eyes should catch the firelight, one of them doesn't.

YSEL · K-? · Scalelist — (the number flickers and won't hold, then blanks: UNCOUNTED)

P23CLOSE, Kompis

coming up the ladder, seeing it at last.

KOMPIS
That's why you have no threads.
KOMPIS
You're not all here.
Uncounted: erased so thoroughly that the world forgets to hold onto you.
PAGE 12
P24TWO-SHOT, Ysel and Vigolas.
YSEL
Give me the black shard. Only that one. Keep the rest.
VIGOLAS
Why would anyone want the one that's empty?
YSEL
Because it isn't.
P25ACTION.

Rougeina blinks in behind Ysel with a blade at her neck. The blade passes through her like through smoke. Ysel doesn't even turn.

YSEL
You can't kill what's already half forgotten, little ghost. You of all people should know that.
PAGE 13
P26ACTION.

Ysel's shadow pours down into the hold again and tears. Planks rip, the stove topples and fire races along the oil-soaked deck. Water floods in from below.

P27CLOSE, Drekk

face lit by the fire, howling.

DREKK
NOT THE KETTLE—
P28ACTION.

Marka grabs him by the collar and hauls him back from the flames.

PAGE 14
P29CLOSE, Trollmage

wide awake, runes flickering weakly on one hand.

TROLLMAGE
I've only waited four hours since the Pass. This will be small.

He writes in the air: MACRO : SEAL HULL = 4

Four violet patches slap over four holes in the hull, and the water stops… for four heartbeats.

P30CLOSE.

The patches crack. The water pours back in.

TROLLMAGE
…Yep. Small.
PAGE 15
P31ACTION, a tier.

The crew abandons ship.

Marka throws Drekk over her shoulder and leaps for the rocks.

Kompis jumps with Mingus in his arms.

Rougeina Swaps with a rowboat.

Trollmage simply falls off the side and lets the crow pull him by the collar.

Vigolas is last out of the hold, coat bundled to his chest, all thirty-seven shards inside it, smoke pouring off him.

P32MID.

On the burning bow, untouched by the flames and not even warm, Ysel stands and watches them go.

PAGES 16–17 — SPLASH
P33SPLASH.

The Kettle burns. A small, ugly, beloved boat, wrapped in fire from bow to stern and sinking in the black fjord under the stars. Her dented brass bell rings once as she tilts. On a rock in the foreground the crew stands soaked and silhouetted: Marka with her arm around Drekk, Kompis holding Mingus, Rougeina on a ledge, Trollmage dripping, and Vigolas holding the coat full of glowing shards against his chest.

On the bow in the heart of the fire, Ysel stands, untouched.

PAGE 18 — THE HOOK
P34CLOSE, Ysel

through the fire, speaking quietly across the water, and they hear every word.

YSEL
You weren't supposed to take all of them.
YSEL
He only wanted one.
YSEL
Now he'll want everything.
P35MID.

She steps backward into her own shadow and is gone, swallowed like a stone into dark water. The Kettle slides under the surface. The bell goes silent.

P36CLOSE, Drekk

on his knees on the rock.

DREKK
…She was ugly. She was slow.
VIGOLAShand on his shoulder
She was ours.
P37WIDE, the fjord in the dark.

Silence. Then, from out on the black water, three voices at once, a man's, a woman's and something hungry, speaking in perfect, terrible unison:

THREE VOICES
ONE OF THOSE SHARDS IS OURS.
P38FINAL PANEL.

Far out on the fjord, standing on the water in the moonlight, one figure: a single body with three shadows cast in three different directions.
