Chapter 80

The Nettle Field
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, ESTABLISHING.

Astralis: a black sky crowded with stars that sit too close, like lanterns. Floating in the starlight, enormous standing mirrors, thousands of them, each as tall as a tower, angled every which way so the sky is reflected in the sky. Black panthers prowl between them, eyes like coins.

Astralis, where Rougeina was born. Mirrors and star-placement. Black panthers are its attention.
P2MID, the Marka

its hull scraping onto a shore of black glass sand. The crew climbs down, squinting at the mirror-forest.

VIGOLAS
You grew up here?
ROUGEINA
I left here.

reading.

TROLLMAGE
Katriel's octagon is in Glasheim, but every mirror-road into it runs through Astralis. Through the Nettle Field: a meadow between the two great mirrors that hold Pride and Envy apart.
P4CLOSE, Rougeina

looking at two mirrors far away on the horizon, larger than any others, one silver, one rose, facing each other across a dark field.

ROUGEINAquietly
…The Mirror Bastion. My mother took me there once. She said: never walk between them. You'll see what you are.
PAGE 3
P5WIDE, the field.

Between the two great mirrors stretches a meadow of nettles, waist-high, green-black, every leaf furred with stinging hairs that glitter in the starlight. Where nettles grow thickest the ground is cracked, as if something was broken there.

P6CLOSE, Kompis

kneeling, looking at the cracks. Sinless, he has no threads to read, so he reads the ground like a tracker.

KOMPIS
These aren't wild. Something planted them. Look how they're lined up. Like they're growing out of… promises.
PAGE 4
P7WIDE.

The nettles part. Walking out of them comes a woman, lean and wild, covered head to toe in stinging hairs, green-black skin welted red on every surface, even her own palms. Her hair is a thicket of nettles. She has never worn gloves, and she never will.

NÄSSLA · FERDINAND-6 · the Nettle · Scalelist: — (the Scarwood are not counted)

P8CLOSE, Nässla

looking at the crew one by one, nostrils flaring as if she can smell lies.

NÄSSLA
Bark. You came in a boat made of his bark.
NÄSSLA
And one of you has been lying to herself for twenty-seven years.
PAGE 5
P9CLOSE, Rougeina

stepping forward, eight blades out.

ROUGEINA
Out of the way.
NÄSSLA
Say it again. Slower. Let's see if it burns.
P10ACTION.

Rougeina Swaps behind her. Nässla doesn't turn; she expects it. Her bare arm sweeps back, the stinging hairs brush Rougeina's cheek, and a red welt blooms there instantly.

PAGES 6–7 — THE CLASH
P11ACTION, a run of fast panels.

Rougeina against Nässla among the nettles.

Rougeina's blades cut nettle-stalks into a green blizzard. Nässla walks through it, welts blooming on her own skin, unbothered.

Every touch is a sting. Rougeina's forearm, her knuckles, her neck: welts rising.

Rougeina Swaps with a mirror-shard on the ground. Nässla is already where it was, because in Astralis Swaps can be seen coming, reflected in a hundred mirrors.

P12CLOSE, Rougeina

panting, welted, furious.

ROUGEINA
I've killed better than you.
NÄSSLA
That's true. It doesn't burn. Try another one.
PAGE 8
P13CLOSE, Nässla

circling.

NÄSSLA
Why are you with them? The pirate and his dog-man and his lazy troll.
ROUGEINA
Because they're useful. Until the list is done.
P14CLOSE, Rougeina's welts.

They flare, red to white-hot, and a small nettle pushes up out of the skin on the back of her hand, green and stinging.

ROUGEINA
Ngh—!
PAGE 9
P15CLOSE, Nässla.
NÄSSLA
That one burned. Again.
ROUGEINAthrough her teeth
I stayed because they… because I said "for now"…
P16CLOSE, a second nettle

pushing out of Rougeina's wrist, right through the silver ring of her sin-mark.

PAGES 10–11 — SPLASH
P17SPLASH (double page). STING-TRUTH.

In the middle of the Nettle Field, between the two great mirrors, silver on one horizon and rose on the other, Rougeina drops to her knees in a swirl of torn nettles, welted and burning, eight blades scattered around her. The whole crew stands frozen at the edge of the field.

And in both great mirrors, enormous, Rougeina is reflected, but not as she is. In the silver mirror (Pride) she stands alone, untouchable, on top of a mast. In the rose mirror (Envy) she sits at a crowded galley table, squashed between a pirate and a man with a dog, laughing with her mouth open.

Nässla stands over her, stinging-hairs glittering.

NÄSSLA
Now. Why did you stay?
PAGE 12
P18CLOSE, Rougeina

looking up at the rose mirror. Tears and welts. And she says it, because she can't say anything else.

ROUGEINA
…Because nobody ever remembered me before.
ROUGEINA
Because they set a place for me. Because the idiot captain laughs at my jokes. Because I want to be one of them, and I'm so scared they'll forget me the way I make everyone forget.
P19CLOSE, her hand.

The nettles on her skin wither and fall away, and the welts cool from white to pink. The truth doesn't burn.

PAGE 13
P20WIDE, the crew at the field's edge.

Nobody moves. Nobody says anything. Vigolas has taken his hand off his coat. Kompis has his hand over his mouth.

P21CLOSE, Vigolas

very quietly, just loud enough.

VIGOLAS
…We're not going to forget you, you idiot.
PAGE 14
P22CLOSE, Nässla

looking down at Rougeina for a long beat. Then at her own welted palms, which have never touched anyone without hurting them.

NÄSSLA
Huh. That's the first true thing anyone's said in this field in a hundred years.
P23CLOSE, Rougeina

wiping her face with a stung hand, hard again, a blade's worth.

ROUGEINA
If you tell anyone, I'll kill you.
NÄSSLA
That one's true too. I like you.
PAGE 15
P24MID.

Nässla turns toward the space between the two great mirrors, where a faint path of starlight leads into the dark, toward a far-off octagon of light.

NÄSSLA
You want Katriel. I walk between her mirrors. They can't reflect me, because I can't pretend to be anything I'm not.
P25CLOSE, Trollmage.
TROLLMAGE
Why would you help us?
PAGE 16 — THE HOOK
P26CLOSE, Nässla

and her own skin burns: welts flaring white on her neck, a nettle pushing out of her collarbone, because what she's about to say costs her.

NÄSSLA
Because when the tree first grew me, a desk in Glasheim tried to assign me. Make me small. "Envy," the ink said.
NÄSSLA
I stung the ink right off the page. So she struck my name out of her book instead. That's why none of us burls are on any board.
P27FINAL PANEL, close.

Nässla, burning with her own truth, looking at the distant octagon.

NÄSSLA
She took my name off her desk once. I want to watch her lose hers.
