Chapter 139

Red Ink
PAGE 1
P1CLOSE, a Corrector

a grey copyist with a red quill behind his ear, stumbles with an armful of ink-pots and knocks a chained book off its pedestal. It falls. Across the gallery, without looking up from her lectern, Meirwen lifts her red pen and draws a short line in the air. The falling book's motion lines get a neat red line struck through them.

P2CLOSE, the pedestal.

The book is sitting on it. It never fell. The Corrector blinks at his own empty hands.

MEIRWENstill reading
Careful, dear.
PAGE 2
P3WIDE, the root gallery.

The crew stands in the archway, Mingus with the old tooth still in his mouth. On every pedestal a Corrector bends over a chained book and stamps the first page in red, and a word blazes across each glowing page in neat capitals: ERRATUM: VOID. Each book's glow sinks to a cinder.

VIGOLAS
Put the pen down, or—
MEIRWEN
—or you'll hit me. Yes. Everyone always does. It's in the margins.
P4CLOSE, Meirwen

finally looking up over her reading glasses, bored and elegant, red pen balanced in her stained fingers.

MEIRWEN
Seventy sleeping books. If they wake now, in this world (no collars, no assignments, no Council), they'll tell their souls whatever they like. So I'm finishing them first. Void. They'll sleep forever, and nobody will miss what they never read.
PAGE 3
P5CLOSE, Kompis, eyes gold.

Out of every chained book runs a thin, bright thread, out through the Library walls to somewhere, to someone. Each time a red VOID lands on a page, its thread goes grey.

KOMPIS
…Each book's tied to a person. Somewhere out there. She's cutting them off before they ever meet.
P6ACTION.

A Corrector turns, sees Bakasura's maw rising out of the floor, and screams, and no sound comes out at all. His mouth is wide open in perfect silence.

KOMPIS
The floor eats fear. Only pages make a noise down here.
VIGOLAS
Then nobody be scared.
PAGES 4–5 — THE CLASH
P7ACTION.

Rougeina Swaps at Meirwen, a silver-rose trail across the gallery. Meirwen lifts her pen, and a red line slashes through the trail. Rougeina is standing back in the archway. She never left.

MEIRWEN
Un-swapped.
P8ACTION, a run of fast panels.

Every attack lands, and then un-happens:

Smurjan walks the Sightline across the gallery. Red line. He is back at its start, foot raised.

Kompis fires Tyst, silent. Red line through the muzzle flash, and the bullet is back in the chamber. Tyst, in his hands, shakes with fury.

Vigolas reaches her and lands a lightning knuckle square on her jaw, KRAK. Red line. He's back mid-swing, three steps away, and her jaw is fine.

MEIRWENwriting in a margin as she speaks
A beat late. I'm always a beat late. It doesn't matter, dear. I have all the beats I want.
P9ACTION.

Bakasura surges out of the floor and swallows a whole pedestal-row of Correctors in one bite. Red line. The Correctors are back, dusting off their sleeves, and Bakasura's jaws close on air.

BAKASURA
…Tastes like… nothing. · …Again?
P10CLOSE, Kali

bursting out of Smurjan's shadow, sickle up.

KALI
You can't just keep—
MEIRWEN
—doing this forever? I can, dear. I've been doing it for eleven hundred years.
KALI
STOP FINISHING MY—
MEIRWEN
—sentences. No.
PAGE 6
P11CLOSE, Meirwen

turning her glasses on Smurjan, almost fond.

MEIRWEN
Smurjan. Wrath. I know your book; I edited it myself. Where it said precision I wrote rage. You believed me for a hundred years.
SMURJANvery quietly
…We did. We broke a lot of things believing you.
P12CLOSE, Meirwen and Rougeina

eye to eye across the gallery.

MEIRWEN
And Rougeina. Seven-seven-seven. I've read you too. Not your book: your list. The Sixth. The Eighth. The Seventh. You've been busy. (She smiles.) They were drafts, dear. Everyone is.
ROUGEINA
Then I'm the editor.
PAGE 7
P13ACTION.

The Correctors swarm. Their red quills write lines in the air, neat ruled red lines that tighten like wire around arms and ankles. Smurjan is lashed to a pedestal, Rougeina's wrists are bound, and Vigolas tears through three lines and gets caught in a fourth. Bakasura rises and eats a whole tangle of red ink.

BAKASURA
…Tastes like… lies.
P14CLOSE, Kali

half-tangled, one arm pinned, still talking, the way she always does, narrating everything in a furious torrent:

KALI
—and you SAW that, I SAW that, Rougeina was RIGHT THERE, and the captain HIT you, he hit you RIGHT in your stupid bored FACE, I SAW him—
PAGE 8
P15CLOSE, Smurjan

lashed to the pedestal, calm, saying it at exactly the same instant as Kali, the two voices from one body, one from the mouth and one from the shadow:

KALI + SMURJAN: He hit her.

P16ACTION.

KRAK. Meirwen's head snaps sideways. A bruise blooms on her jaw: the punch she struck out has landed after all. Her glasses swing on their chain. She stares, touching her face.

MEIRWEN
…Don't do that.
P17CLOSE, Kompis and Smurjan

looking at each other.

KOMPIS
Two of them said it. Out loud. At the same time.
SMURJANthird eye on her, reading
She can only strike what's already written. And what two witnesses say they saw… writes it back.
PAGES 9–10 — SPLASH
P18SPLASH (double page). WE SAW IT.

The root gallery, violet light, red ink lines strung across it like a web. The crew, bound and tangled and scattered, tied to one another by gold threads only Kompis can see, feel each other, every one, and take one breath together. Then, in one beat, out loud:

CREW
WE SAW IT.

And every struck line of the whole fight comes back at once: Rougeina's Swap lands her a hand's breadth from Meirwen; Tyst's silent bullet flies; Smurjan's open palm lands on his Sightline's end; Bakasura's jaws close on a row of Correctors; Vigolas's lightning knuckle lands a second time. A dozen blows hit Meirwen and her Correctors in the same instant. The red lines in the air snap like violin strings, and Meirwen is thrown back across the gallery in a spray of red ink, pen spinning, glasses flying out on their chain.

PAGE 11
P19CLOSE, Meirwen

picking herself up against the doorframe of the white reading room. Hair coming out of its knot, red pen still in her hand, ink on her cheek like a cut.

MEIRWEN
…Witnesses.
P20CLOSE, Meirwen

looking at the crew, and through her lenses, at what joins them.

MEIRWEN
You feel each other. All of you. How terribly vulgar.
VIGOLASgrinning, bleeding
Thanks!
PAGE 12
P21WIDE, the door behind her: THE CODEX ANNEX.

A long reading room of white stone, lamps and desks, at the root of Glasheim, where the Marhold Spine turns inside out. The door at its far end shows snowlight from the Order's city; the near door opens onto the Library's violet. On the wall over the desks, an inscription in neat red letters: EVERYTHING IS A DRAFT.

P22CLOSE, Meirwen

stepping backwards over the threshold into her seat. The doorframe glows around her like a page catching the light.

MEIRWEN
Fine. Come in, then. In here, dear, I don't even need the pen.
PAGE 13
P23CLOSE, Kompis

in the gallery, eyes gold, looking at Meirwen through the doorway. Her threads are every one of them struck through with a neat red line, hundreds of them, to colleagues and books and places and years, like a whole page of crossed-out sentences.

P24CLOSE, Kompis.
KOMPIS
…Captain. Every thread she has is crossed out. She's edited herself.
VIGOLAS
All of them?
PAGE 14
P25CLOSE, a single thread.

One, thin and silver-white and unstruck, running from Meirwen's heart down to her belt, into a small locked box: plain old wood, a brass clasp, worn smooth by a hand that has held it and never opened it.

P26CLOSE, Kompis.
KOMPIS
…Except one. It goes into that box.
PAGE 15
P27CLOSE, Meirwen's hand

closing over the little wooden box at her belt. Hard.

P28CLOSE, Meirwen.

For the first time, the boredom is gone from her face. Underneath it there's something raw and old and frightened.

MEIRWEN
…Don't.
PAGE 16 — THE HOOK
P29FINAL PANEL, wide.

The Annex doorway glowing white. Meirwen inside, in her seat, pen raised, the box clutched to her. The crew in the violet gallery outside, untangling themselves, every one of them looking at the box.

ROUGEINAquietly
…There. That's the page she can't strike.
