Chapter 208
The Bastion's jetty, wet and quiet. The fjord black and ordinary again; the Tideline gone far back toward the horizon, a pale line at the edge of sight. And at the foot of the wall of light, still standing exactly as he stood, shield to the stone, hand on the wall: Aldhrun, dead, keeping guard.
in a long line on the jetty, helmets off, saluting. Nobody has dared to move him.
at his feet where she has sat all night, the basin and cloths beside her. She stands. She puts her small hand on the old man's scarred bare one, still pressed to the wall.
(No word. She's spent it.)
Smurjan and Vigolas, very gently, lifting him. The shield coming away from the stone, and as it does, the wall of light shudders, and doesn't fall. It stays standing on its own.
Aldhrun laid out on his own tower-shield on the jetty, scarred all over, the war-axe on his chest, his face, for the first time in the series, at rest. The guards lay their own shields round him in a ring.
kneeling at the shield's edge. She takes nothing. She crosses nothing off. She just puts two fingers to the scar on his face, the one from the night of the Heist that never closed.
(It has.)
standing over the shield, cap in his hands, which he never does.
Up the Marhold Spine, over the white towers of Glasheim, the floating Archive hanging in the sky. And on the Bastion's highest gate, the great iron lock, the one that has never in five hundred years been open, clicking, and swinging free in the wind.
looking up at the gate, white.
glancing up at the open gate, and then, despite everything, the ghost of a grin.
At the jetty's end, on Bror's last puddle: Drämmen, sagging, bigger and wetter and softer than ever, half his face sloughed loose, water pouring off him in sheets. He's turned toward the white.
hurrying down the jetty to him.
barnacled, held against his chest.
and something in the barnacled pits of his eyes glows sea-green, faintly, the way it does when he drags something back.
Drämmen wading back down into the fjord, out toward the pale line of the Tideline, his outline slowly going dotted with distance, leaving a trail of puddles on the water that stay.
at the jetty's edge in a borrowed coat, watching him go. Whole. Two dark eyes. And on the sunlit stones round her feet, no shadow at all.
The Marka at anchor below the Bastion in the morning sun, grass on her deck, barley in her planter box, the Kettle's bell and the CAMILLA THE SERAPHIM plank at her bow. On the jetty above her: the crew, and among them a young woman in a borrowed coat with short dark hair and two solemn grey eyes, standing in full sunlight, everyone round her throwing long morning shadows across the stones, and she throwing none.
Over her head, for the first time in her life, a rank plate forming, flickering, and holding:
YSEL · K-I UNMARKED (new entry) · Scalelist #4,000,112
Behind them all, the wall of light still standing at the fjord's head, and an old soldier on his shield beneath it.
looking up at her own plate, then down at the place where her shadow isn't, then at Drekk.
gruff, careful.
a long, long beat, her hands twisting the red pennant she's taken back from the white.
and the old navigator's face doing something it hasn't done since the Kettle went down.
who has obviously been listening the whole time, grinning so hard it must hurt.
being run up the Marka's mainmast by Ysel herself, the old faded triangle with its stitched kettle, flying under the Marka's own flag.
The crew settling in. Ysel shown a hammock in the bilge ("It's quieter"). Mingus following her everywhere, puzzled by the missing shadow, sniffing the deck where it should be. Kali already talking at her nonstop from Smurjan's shadow.
on the deck, the Gluttony Codex on his chest, both hands on it, eyes on the horizon where the Tideline is.
The Bastion guards carrying Aldhrun up the long stair into the Bastion on his shield. Lärka walking behind, carrying the axe. At the fjord's head, the wall of light, fading at last as the sun sets, a day after its maker fell. It thins to mist, and it's gone.
watching it go, Mingus at his side.
Footsteps on the jetty. Careful, unhurried, stooped. And a soft wheeling light sliding across the stones, the hull, the faces of the crew: a slowly turning map of stars.
coming down the jetty in the dusk. Very tall, very thin, stooped like a question mark. A long grey-green coat with a hundred small labelled pockets. Three pairs of spectacles stacked on his nose. A lantern on a pole throwing a wheeling star-map over everything. Over his shoulder, a heavy leather satchel that clinks like glass.
OSWIN · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Five, Keeper of the Index
stopping before Vigolas, with a dry, polite, exhausted smile. He opens the satchel. Inside, packed in straw: eleven shards of glass, each one glowing faintly from within, and in each one, tiny, thousands of faces.
the star-map wheeling across his spectacles, his voice very quiet.
