Chapter 384
Kompis three steps from Smurjan along the crimson line, raising one open hand, palm out, the way you'd push a door you don't want to wake anyone behind.
His palm flat on Smurjan's chest, the softest push he can give. And the Arena making it a battering ram: Smurjan driven back three long strides, his bare heels tearing furrows in the bark that heal as fast as they open.
And the Wrath answering. Smurjan's right palm coming up along the Sightline before he has decided anything, straight and perfect and unhurried, the one correct strike, at the centre of Kompis's chest. At his heart.
fighting his own arm: the third eye blazing, the two grey ones wide, his teeth set.
(In the last half inch, he turns the palm.)
The turned palm, still landing: high on the chest, off the heart, on the collarbone. Kompis lifted off his feet.
Kompis flat on his back on the bark. Mingus over him at once, licking his face, whining. Along the bottom of the panel the golden pulse line stuttering: ba-dum… ba—
Rougeina dropping to one knee, both hands flat on her own chest, her face gone white, her mouth open on no breath. Exactly the way she went down once before, in a field stitched from two worst memories, on the same beat as a man she'd cut.
(No balloon.)
Vigolas, beside the troll, staring across the floor at her. His ∞−1 glitching gold over his head. Trollmage, very still, his ears flat, looking from Rougeina to Kompis and back.
(Nobody says anything.)
Krydog half over the rail, Roffe's fist in his coat, the rest of the Up-Again crew on their feet behind him.
Kompis getting up, slowly, one hand in Mingus's fur. The pulse line steadying: ba-dum. ba-dum. Smurjan standing over him, his right hand held out from his body as if it belonged to someone else.
a split panel across the whole width of the floor. Her getting to her feet in the north; him on his feet in the south. Their eyes meeting. Both of them remembering two pulse lines on a deck going flat together, and starting together.
breaking it, loud, the way he breaks everything he doesn't want to look at.
(In Rougeina's pupil, for one frame, a pinpoint of silver-rose.)
Vigolas turning toward her with his fists lit, and she isn't there. Where she stood, a silver-rose afterimage, fading.
She is on his left. She is on his right. She is behind him. She is in front of him. Silver-rose phantom trails standing in a ring round him, four of her, eight, twelve, every one of them a trail, none of them her.
every one of them speaking at once, low and clipped:
turning and turning, Greed-sight on, his eyes ringed with gold: and nothing gold anywhere. Afterimages are worth nothing. There is nothing in the ring to strike.
lowering his fists. The lightning going out of them, strand by strand.
The ring of trails folding in, and Rougeina in front of him, one body, barefoot, her blades still crossed on her back. The black panther padding out of nowhere and sitting at her side.
the grin coming back, crooked.
Four of them lying down on the bark, one after another:
Vigolas flat on his back, arms flung wide. "I yield!"
Kompis sitting down with Mingus in his lap. "I yield."
Rougeina cross-legged, not looking at anyone. "Yield."
Trollmage lying down with enormous, sincere relief. "Mm. Happily."
And Smurjan, left standing alone in the middle of the floor, looking very uncomfortable.
the letters forming, cold:
IN THIS MATCH A YIELD IS NOT AN ENDING.
landing one by one like stones on a lid:
ONE STANDS WHEN FOUR ARE FINISHED.
on his back, staring up at it. The grin gone, completely. That's how the crew knows it's bad.
His eyes filming gold, the world full of threads: and between the five of them, threads he has seen every day for years and never once looked at all together. Thick as hawsers. Gold, emerald, crimson, silver-rose, violet, braided into each other, and none of them tied. They look the way a branch looks where it leaves a trunk: grown.
(Kompis looks away. He doesn't say it.)
The five stop. All of them at once, at the same instant, as if a single nervous system had decided: enough.
Vigolas sitting up and putting his fists in his lap. Trollmage's robe going still on the bark. Kompis kneeling, one hand on Mingus's head. Smurjan's three shadows sliding together into one. Rougeina sitting cross-legged on the bark with her face turned up to the silent dead, a thousand rows of them, half of them blank.
Not one weapon raised. Not one hand clenched. Five people on a floor of living bark, under a cathedral of endings, refusing.
In the stands of the living, ten thousand people, and not one of them breathing.
the third eye closing, slowly, like a door being let to.
sitting up, his crown in his lap, asking the universe more than he is asking any of them.
looking up at eight blank seats in the stands of the dead.
(The verdict cube, in Vigolas's sash, humming.)
the moment-before-an-ending flickering faster and faster, a hundred faces in a breath, and the whole vast figure tilting what would be its head, the way it did once in a sky over the Shallows, when it noticed someone.
Its letters forming, slow, deliberate, one at a time, across the air above the stands of the dead:
RULE FIVE.
And in the front row of the dead, an old drowned bosun with a ring in one ear turning his head, very slowly, toward the floor.
