Chapter 45

The Record
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, the Shallows at dawn.

The Marka drifts toward a small island floating in the starlight: a market town built on a turtle-backed rock, stalls of patched canvas, lanterns, and a battered Scalelist board on a pole in the square.

P2MID, the crew on deck

bruised and exhausted. Kompis holds a wooden box tied with string: Ivar's pieces. Rougeina's arm is in a sling. Trollmage, asleep, is being carried in Drekk's arms like a sack of flour.

DREKK
Food. Water. Bandages. Nobody start anything.
VIGOLAS
When have I ever started anything?

(Everyone looks at him.)

PAGE 2
P3WIDE, the market square.

The crew walks in. Heads turn.

In the square, the board: dozens of names. And there, near the top section, two lines everyone in the market is staring at:

SMURJAN · K-IV · #1,602

VIGOLAS · ∞−1 · 1 defeat (HADOM)

P4CLOSE, a pair of rough men at a stall

looking from the board to Vigolas.

HUNTER
…That's him. The unnumbered one.
HUNTER 2
He lost. Says it right there. He lost.
HUNTER
Then he's not so scary, is he.
PAGE 3
P5WIDE.

A dozen bounty hunters rise from tables around the square: chains, nets, harpoons. Cheap sin-marks glow on wrists and necks.

RANK PLATE ×12: BOUNTY HUNTER · K-II MARKED · Scalelist #90,000–#300,000

HUNTER CAPTAIN
Whoever brings in the man the board can't count gets paid by Trisdel and the Bastion. Twice.
P6CLOSE, Vigolas

deadpan, to Drekk.

VIGOLAS
I didn't start it.
DREKK
You looked like you were going to.
PAGES 4–5 — SPLASH
P7SPLASH (double page). The crew, exhausted and bandaged, beats twelve bounty hunters anyway.

Rougeina, one-handed, Swaps a harpoon out of a hunter's hands and into a barrel.

Drekk, still holding the sleeping Trollmage like a sack, kicks a man into a fruit stall without putting the mage down.

Kali, one-armed too, sits on top of a hunter and eats his apple.

Bakasura swallows a net whole and burps out the knots.

Mingus has a hunter's boot in his teeth and is tugging, tail wagging, delighted.

At the centre, Smurjan stands in front of Vigolas, between the captain and three hunters with chains, his third eye open and the faint scars of crimson script on his skin glowing:

SMURJAN
He lost to me.
SMURJAN
That means the next man who touches him loses to me too.
PAGE 6
P8WIDE.

The hunters scatter. Silence in the square. Merchants peek out from behind their stalls.

P9CLOSE, Vigolas

behind Smurjan, scratching his head.

VIGOLAS
…I could've handled that.
SMURJAN
We know.
VIGOLAS
I'm just saying. I could have.
SMURJAN
We know, captain.
PAGE 7
P10INTERIOR, an inn on the island, later.

The crew at a long table, eating like starving wolves. Bakasura's head pokes through the window, chewing an entire roast pig.

P11CLOSE, Rougeina

eyeing the board through the window.

ROUGEINA
It doesn't bother you? Him above you?
VIGOLASmouth full
He earned it.
ROUGEINA
That's not what I asked.
P12CLOSE, Vigolas

swallowing, honest.

VIGOLAS
…Little bit.
VIGOLAS
Mostly I'm glad it was him.
PAGE 8
P13NIGHT, the Marka's deck, anchored off the island.

Starlight below. Vigolas sits alone at the bow beside the Kettle's bell, humming softly, the same three notes over and over, and then stopping.

VIGOLAS
Hm… hm-hm… (stops). Hm… hm…
P14CLOSE, Vigolas

frustrated, head against the bell.

VIGOLAS
Come on. Come on, it's right there.
PAGE 9
P15MID.

Kompis sits down next to him with the wooden box in his lap. Mingus flops between them.

KOMPIS
The song?
VIGOLAS
Gone. I know there was one. I know she sang it every night. I can't find a single note.
P16CLOSE, Kompis.

He thinks for a moment, then starts to hum. It's a different tune: slow, simple, a little off-key, a lullaby from somewhere cold.

KOMPIS
Hm-hm-hmm, hm-hm-hmmm…
PAGE 10
P17CLOSE, Vigolas

listening.

VIGOLAS
…What's that?
KOMPIS
My mother's. Or someone's. I don't remember where I learned it.
KOMPIS
You can't have yours back yet. So borrow mine.
P18CLOSE, Vigolas.

After a beat, he starts humming it too, badly, a half-step behind.

PAGE 11
P19WIDE, the two of them at the bow

humming a stranger's lullaby off-key under the stars, the dog asleep between them, the ship rocking. Behind them, at the mast, Smurjan has his eyes closed. Inside his chest, faintly, among the eighteen voices, one hums along.

PAGE 12
P20CLOSE, Kompis

looking down at the wooden box. His thumb strokes the string.

KOMPIS
I keep thinking he's just… quiet. Like he'll start complaining any second. About the weather. About my aim.
P21CLOSE, Vigolas.
VIGOLAS
We'll get him back.
KOMPIS
How do you know?
PAGE 13
P22CLOSE, Vigolas

grinning, the old grin, the first time since the Arena.

VIGOLAS
Because I'm greedy.
VIGOLAS
I don't leave things behind.
P23CLOSE, Kompis

laughing despite himself.

KOMPIS
You left a whole Arena match behind.
VIGOLAS
That wasn't a thing. That was a fight. Totally different.
PAGE 14
P24WIDE, the market island at night

from the deck. On the battered board in the square, lit by one lantern, the names glow. A few drunk hunters still stand under it, pointing up at the strange line, ∞−1, 1 defeat, arguing.

P25CLOSE, the board.

As they watch, the little cold tag beside Vigolas's name flickers. Then, in small hard square letters that look exactly like the Arena's hand, a second line appears beneath it:

RECORD
CALLED 1 · YIELDED 1.
PAGE 15 — THE HOOK
P26CLOSE, a hunter

squinting at it.

HUNTER
…Yielded? Nobody yields in the Arena. Nobody ever yields.
HUNTER 2
Then why'd he?
P27FINAL PANEL, the Marka at anchor

small and dark on the starlit sea, with two men humming at its bow.

HUNTERdistant
…Who gives up a win?
