Chapter 3
A city made entirely of glass, floating in a violet twilight between sleep and waking. Staircases climb into nothing. Bridges end in mid-air. Every pane holds something frozen inside it: a hand signing a paper, a door closing, a face deciding.
The crew lies in a circle on the deck, heads together like the spokes of a wheel, eyes closed. Mingus is curled against Kompis's chest.
the only one with her eyes open for a second, looking up at the stars as if she has done this before.
one eye cracked open, watching her.
The crew walks between drifting panes of glass. Each one shows a life. Marka touches one and a stranger's memory of a wedding blooms around her fingers.
A shard drifts past Kompis at eye level. Inside it, unmistakably, is his own face, with a label burned into the glass:
KOMPIS · K-II · ASSET OF ARCHITECT THREE · ENGAGEMENT ACTIVE
Kompis grabs it out of the air and shoves it into his hoodie before anyone turns around. Mingus sees. Mingus always sees.
The hall goes grey. Everything is worth almost nothing, except at the very end of the hall, where a vault door glows like a sunrise. Behind it, on a pedestal, sits a ring of thirty-eight shards, humming.
The shelves on both sides of the hall unfold. Glass panes, drawers, ledgers and brass rails assemble themselves into a towering figure three times a man's height: a body of filing cabinets, ribs of shelving and a face like a clock. A silver sin-mark glows across its chest, spread wide in crawling script.

It raises one long brass hand.
(a) Marka is ripped off her feet and slammed into a wall-slot that seals around her like a drawer: filed.
(b) Drekk is folded neatly into a cabinet: filed.
(c) Kompis freezes mid-step, pinned in place by a shining silver placement pin through his shadow. Mingus, at his feet, shakes his head and keeps walking.
tilting, confused. The brass hand points at Mingus, then slides off him, the way the eye slides off something that isn't there.
The Warden turns to Vigolas, and every pin, drawer and silver rail in the hall turns with it.
Vigolas sprints up a staircase made of frozen decisions. Every step he lands on flashes a stranger's moment: a yes, a no, a door slammed. The Warden hurls drawers like guillotines behind him, and the stairs shatter step by step under his heels.
A silver pin flies at him. He twists, the pin lands in the step instead, and that step files itself away, vanishing. He is running up a staircase that is being erased beneath him.
The Warden grabs him at last, a brass fist the size of a door closing around his whole body.
The Warden's chest opens: a black, empty drawer, the drawer marked NOTHING. It starts to shove him in.
pinned and frozen, sweat running. Mingus trots back to him, the one creature in the Archive the pins can't touch, and presses his nose into Kompis's frozen hand.
The golden pulse line flickers back to life along the panel border. Thump.
Grey world. Kompis twists out of his own pinned shadow (one try, two hundred tries, the one that works) and fires three shots. Each shot splits a placement pin. The cabinets burst open; Drekk and Marka spill out onto the floor.
half inside the NOTHING drawer, one arm still free. He reaches into his coat and pulls out the cube from chapter 1: two Sentinels, their chains of light and a ton of beach, crushed into a fist of humming glass.
He smashes the cube against the Warden's clock-face. It bursts open. Everything that was compacted explodes back to full size at once: sand, surf, two very confused Sentinels and their chains of light, which lash around the Warden's arms and neck and bind it like a parcel.
The Warden crashes to its knees, chained by its own Order's chains. Drekk is already scrambling up the broken stairs, pointing.
Behind them, the whole glass city has started to crack, panes splintering like ice in spring.
Vigolas reaches the pedestal. Thirty-eight shards hum around him. His face is lit gold from below. We do not see what he takes.
The Archive collapses into waking. Staircases dissolve into light, and the crew runs down them as they vanish. Marka carries Drekk under one arm. Kompis runs with Mingus at his heel. Ysel moves through the falling glass at a walk, never hurrying, never hit.
Everything goes white.
The whole crew jerks awake on the deck at once, gasping. Drekk grabs Vigolas by the collar.
Everyone exhales. Marka laughs in relief. Drekk sits down hard.
Vigolas throws his coat open. Sewn into the lining, glowing like a galaxy, are thirty-eight shards, every one of them.
Around him: Drekk's face is pure horror, Marka is roaring with laughter, Kompis has gone white, Mingus wags his tail, and Ysel watches the shards without blinking.
Across the world, in four different cities, the great Scalelist boards flicker at the same moment. Four numbers leap up the ladder. And at the top of every board, the line ∞−1 has started to blink red.
Kompis sits alone. One shard has slipped out of Vigolas's coat onto the deck. He picks it up. Inside it is a woman's face, a soldier being shoved into a body that is too old for her, and a label:
ROUTED BY ORDER OF ARCHITECT THREE
Kompis looks at the shard for a long time. Then he quietly slips it back into Vigolas's coat.
He doesn't report.
High above the whole crew, unseen by any of them, sits a woman who has been there the whole time: crimson hair, eight thin blades crossed on her back, and a black panther stretched along the yard-arm beside her like a shadow with eyes.
