Chapter 4

The Thief Who Was Already There
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, night, a cove under black cliffs.

A small patched boat bobs at anchor, its stern painted with a crooked name: THE KETTLE. On the beach the crew sleeps around a dying fire. Marka snores like a landslide. Drekk sleeps hugging his spyglass. Vigolas sleeps sitting up against a rock with his coat wrapped tight around himself, both arms crossed over the lining like a dragon on a hoard.

P2MID, Kompis on watch

rifle across his knees, Mingus's head in his lap. Ysel sits apart on a rock, hood up, perfectly still. Whether she is asleep or awake is impossible to tell.

P3CLOSE, Mingus.

One ear lifts. He looks up at the Kettle's mast.

P4POV, the mast.

Empty. Only the lantern swaying.

KOMPISwhisper
…Nothing there, boy.
PAGE 2
P5CLOSE, a driftwood log

lying in the sand right beside Vigolas.

P6SAME FRAME, next beat.

The log is gone. Crouched exactly where it lay is ROUGEINA: crimson hair, barefoot, eight thin blades crossed on her back.

High on the mast, where she was, the driftwood log is now wedged against the lantern.

P7INSERT, the mast.

Where she stood, a faint silver-rose silhouette of her lingers in the air like a heat-ghost, slowly fading.

(No caption. The image teaches it: she traded places with the log, and she left a trail.)

PAGE 3
P8CLOSE, her hand

sliding into the lining of Vigolas's coat, fingers walking along the seams, counting, looking for one particular shard.

P9SNAP.

Vigolas's hand clamps around her wrist. His eyes are still closed.

VIGOLAS
Nobody touches my things.
P10CLOSE, his eyes opening

emerald, already grinning.

VIGOLAS
…Hi.
PAGE 4
P11ACTION.

She looks past him at the campfire. Blink. He is now holding a burning branch instead of her wrist, and she is standing on the far side of the fire.

VIGOLASstaring at the branch
Okay, that's a good trick.
P12WIDE, the camp waking up.

Marka is on her feet with the anchor. Drekk shouts "NOT THE BOAT!" at nobody in particular. A black panther pours out of the darkness and settles between the crew and the fight like a lowered gate, its tail flicking.

P13CLOSE, Kompis

rifle half raised. The ghost of Ivar appears on the barrel, very serious for once.

IVAR
That's a K-three, boy. Don't.
PAGES 5–6 — THE DANCE
P14ACTION, wide.

Rougeina draws two of her eight blades and moves. It is a dance: a spin, a step, a turn on one bare heel. Every movement is a cut, and every cut is aimed precisely, never at anything Vigolas needs.

ROUGEINA
I only need two for you.
P15ACTION.

Vigolas dodges by inches, laughing, ducking, rolling through the sand. His coat sleeve is shredded, his hair is clipped, there's a line across his cheek.

P16POV, Greed-sight.

The world goes grey and gold. Her blades are dull silver: cheap. The panther glows warm: loved, but not his. And her eyes keep flicking to one single point in his coat, where one shard glows brighter in her gaze than all the others combined.

P17CLOSE, Vigolas

understanding.

VIGOLAS
You're not here for the bag.
VIGOLAS
You're here for one.
PAGE 7
P18MID.

He raises an open hand toward her. Green lightning flickers around his fingers.

VIGOLAS
COMP—
P19CLOSE, his face

frozen mid-word. A flash panel inside his head: the wreck of his ship on the beach and the blank where her name used to be.

VIGOLASthinking
…What do I lose this time?
P20SAME INSTANT.

That half-second of hesitation is all she needs.

PAGES 8–9 — SPLASH
P21SPLASH.

Blink. She is behind him, one blade laid flat against his throat. With her other hand, without looking, she slits exactly one seam of the lining and draws out exactly one shard. The whole beach is reflected in her blade: the fire, the stunned crew, the panther's yellow eyes. Behind her on the sand, three silver-rose ghost-silhouettes of her fade one after another, where she was.

P22CLOSE, the shard

in her hand. Inside it: the soldier-woman being forced into a body too old for her. The label burns: ROUTED BY ORDER OF ARCHITECT THREE.

P23INSERT, Kompis

eyes going wide. He has held that shard before. Ch. 3: he put it back.

P24MID.

Rougeina steps away from Vigolas and lowers the blade.

ROUGEINA
Keep the other thirty-seven, pirate. I came for one.
PAGE 11
P25CLOSE, Vigolas

rubbing his throat. Not afraid. Offended.

VIGOLAS
That one's mine. I stole it fair.
P26CLOSE, Rougeina.

For the first time her voice is not steady.

ROUGEINA
She was my mother.
P27SILENT PANEL.

The fire crackles. Nobody moves. Marka slowly lowers her anchor.

PAGE 12
P28LOW ANGLE.

The panther pads across the sand to Kompis and drops something at his feet: a glass shard, wet from its mouth. His own file. KOMPIS · K-II · ASSET OF ARCHITECT THREE. It had been in his hoodie.

P29CLOSE, Kompis

white. He puts his boot over it before anyone else looks down.

P30CLOSE, Rougeina, looking straight at him.

She says nothing, and she doesn't have to. She knows what he is.

PAGE 13
P31WIDE.

She looks up at a boulder far up the cliff. Blink. She is gone. The panther melts into the dark after her. On the beach, a line of fading silver-rose silhouettes leads up the cliff like footprints made of ghosts.

P32MID, the crew.
DREKK
…She left a trail. Like a ghost that forgot to leave.
MARKA
So what now, Captain? She took one of yours.
P33CLOSE, Vigolas.

He looks at the fading trail, and the grin comes back slowly.

VIGOLAS
I'll get it back. With interest.
VIGOLAS
We follow the ghost.
PAGE 14
P34CLOSE, Kompis

picking his file up off the sand when nobody is looking. Mingus leans against his leg.

KOMPISwhisper
She knows.

Mingus's tail thumps once against the sand.

KOMPIS
…That's not an answer.
PAGE 15 — THE HOOK
P35WIDE, the cliff top, the same moment.

Below Rougeina's trail, a line of white Sentinel lanterns is climbing the cliff path. They are following the silver-rose ghosts too.

P36MID.

A Trisdel gate-warden kneels and touches a fading silhouette with a gloved hand. It fizzles under his fingers like a spark.

GATE-WARDEN
Trail's warm.
GATE-WARDEN
Architect Three's orders. Alive. He wants to sign her himself.
