Chapter 326
The golden Sun-Wolf standing over the grounded ships, a sun in its jaws, its light pooling gold across the near half of the river. And beyond the light, the grey: thick, edged now, drawn with a line for the first time, lying across the water and the hills like a tide of fog that has suddenly been given a shape.
first on his feet in the shallows, water to his knees, bandaged fists up, the silver double-ring blazing in both eyes.
getting up off the tilted deck, rolling his shoulders, lightning crawling up both arms for the first time since the grey came, bright, eager.
Emerald Knuckle, full charge, a column of green fire thick as a tree trunk, straight into the grey's edge. And the grey taking the hit: not swallowing it, not ignoring it. Struck. A great dent punched into the fog, its edge buckling back like cloth.
and inside it, for a second, a little boat with a sleeping soul in it, uncovered, coming back into colour.
a slow, huge, pirate's grin.
The river of the dead under a golden wolf's sun, and two crews charging the grey, every one of them, every power at once, and every power landing:
Vigolas, lightning columns punching dents in the fog. Rougeina Swapping with the grey's own edge, one Swap a beat, tearing pieces off it. Svala on a Flight-Line straight through a wall of grey that parts. Kali's black-glass sickle cutting the edge like cloth ("Things with edges—"). Bakasura's jaws closing on a mouthful of nothing, and it tastes of something. Smurjan's shadow holding the grey back with seventeen voices in it. Kompis, the Five-Gun Volley, five shots on five Subtick lines, five holes in the fog. Trollmage flat on the deck: MACRO : RISE = 11 DAYS OF NAPS. Jeppson's chalk: a sea-wall rising out of the shallows, and the grey breaking on it. Emma's circle round the held boats. Roffe swinging Sleven like an oar into the fog. Perne high on the Marka's tilted mast, Fjärran, a crimson tear. Tihi laughing, laughing, and the grey letting go of a boat. Krydog in front of all of them, going down, getting up, going down, getting up.
And over them, holding the sun, the wolf.
on his knees in the shallows, chalking on a flat dry stone at the river's edge, shaking, the sea-wall rising. Tomorrow's shaking already in his hands.
flat on his back on the deck, one lazy finger lifting. The violet letters in the air: MACRO : RISE = 11 DAYS OF NAPS. And every sleeping boat in the gold light lifting off the colourless water, floating up into the sun's reach, out of the grey's.
leaning on the Marka's rail, three taps, tk tk tk, and this time sound. An emerald ruled line flickering across the grey's edge: the rule, made visible. "The rule: the grey goes where it's pointed." Pinch. One notch.
(The whole edge of the grey kinks one notch away from a row of held boats.)
in his other hand. A tiny emerald pling in the panel corner. A new line scratching itself: NULL, 1 NOTCH. DUE: ?
chalking a circle round a raft of held boats in the gold light, the line closing, and inside it, nothing can make anyone let go of a name.
on the Upp Igen's deck, his stomach roaring, the amber back in his eyes, ladling stew out of a cauldron he relit from a sunbeam into bowls passed hand to hand down the line.
Swapping with a torn piece of the grey's edge: she's where the fog was, the fog is where she was, and the fog, on the sunlit deck, evaporating. Again. Again. One Swap a beat.
cutting a long rip in the grey's edge with her black-glass sickle, and through the rip, a faint voice, a fourth one, from inside the glass of the blade: Bali.
perfectly still on the deck, and the grey in her line of sight stopping. Holding a wall of the Null itself in time. Not breathing.
(Two phases. Even time works on it now.)
standing on a sunlit raft of boats, holding up ten bare fingers, rings gone dull, prices fluttering out over the held dead, one brass tag hung over the whole flotilla.
(The grey reaching for a tagged boat, and sliding off.)
The grey giving ground: rolling back across the river, away from the ships, away from the held boats, its edge torn and dented and kinked, the gold light of the wolf's sun following it across the water. The crews wading after it through the shallows, still fighting, still landing.
(The grey pauses in front of him for exactly as long as his hand is up.)
in front, going down under a wave of grey and getting up, ba-dum, ba-DUM, and down, and up, every rise a step further across the river.
Halfway across the river. The grey pushed back to the middle of the water. The boats on the near half of Thanatos all gold-lit now, held, saved. And drifting in among them from the far side on their gold lines, before the grey closed behind them, the called: thirty-one boats in a ragged line, a hundred and eleven of a lost village, and an old troll-mason walking down out of the far stands along Drekk's called line to sit in the near ones. Both crews strung out across the river in the shallows, battered, shining, unstoppable.
wading at the front beside Krydog, lightning on both fists, looking back once at the Sun-Wolf over the ships behind them. The dog-god holding the sun so they can stand in it.
Three-quarters across. The grey pushed to the foot of the far hills. And it stops moving back. Not because it's winning. Because behind it there's nothing to push it back into.
at the far shallows, eyes gold, looking at the far shore, and going white. Seeing threads. Seeing where they end.
revealed as the grey pulls back off the water's edge. The hills where the stands of the watching dead were. Empty. Not grey. Not dark. Blank: rows of stone seats with nobody in them, boats on the far bank with nobody in them, a slope of hillside drawn in outline only, like an unfinished page.
(No balloon.)
at the water's edge, looking up at the far stands. At the eight seats in a row where Torvik, Baldr and the others sat. Empty.
beside her, eyes gold, his face wet.
at the very edge of the river, looking at the far hills. At the empty boats on the bank. The thirty-one of the Gråtrut were on this side. He counts them in his head. He doesn't know if they're among the empty.
And on the crest of the far hills, above the empty stands, where the grey is thickest, standing upright out of the ground like a doorframe with no door: a black bar, tall as a lighthouse, and through the gap inside it, the grey still pouring. Slowly. Patiently. Into the realm of the dead.
and the grey flowing through it like smoke through an open window, and beyond it, through the gap, nothing: not dark, not light, the colour of nothing at all.
Vigolas throwing an Emerald Knuckle at the black frame: the lightning landing on the grey pouring through it, and doing nothing to the bar. The bar isn't grey. It's ink.
Two crews on the far shore of the river of the dead, battered, shining, at the foot of a hill of empty seats, under a black doorframe the height of a lighthouse that the grey keeps pouring through. The Sun-Wolf's light reaching them from across the water, and stopping at the door.
and standing in the gap of it, between the grey behind and the gold in front, a tall thin stooped man with a kind face and a book under his arm, his hand on the frame.
