Chapter 325
The grounded ships. The fallen crews in the grey shallows. Jorvand stopped on the water. And on the tilted deck, Mingus over Kompis, the gold light in his eyes growing.
lying on her side in the grey, barred, her lips still moving on eight names nobody can hear. Her eyes on the dog. On the gold coming up in his eyes. And something surfacing in her, from a long time ago.
A child's bedroom. A moon-shaped lamp. A little girl with a gap in her teeth under a patchwork quilt, clutching a knitted toy wolf: Edda. And beside the bed in a cardigan, an old man with a book, reading: Baldr.
On the beam above the bedroom door, unseen, a girl with crimson hair and a drawn blade, listening, waiting for the story to end so she can kill the man telling it.
closing the book, smiling at the child.
in the grey, barred, a single tear running sideways across her face into the colourless water. Her lips moving on something that isn't a name.
on his back on the deck, his hand still reaching for his coat pocket. And the pocket glowing: Aska's ember, burning through the cloth, brighter and brighter, as if it were being called.
The ember leaving his pocket on its own: a small coal in a curl of smoke, rising out of the cloth, floating across the tilted deck through the grey, gold, steady, to the dog.
(No SFX.)
opening his mouth. Taking the ember gently in his teeth, the way he'd take an egg, or a pup, or a ball he means to give back. Not biting down.
and it growing: a coal, a lamp, a fire, a ball of light too bright to look at, gold and white, held in a dog's mouth without hurting him. Nothing burns him.
on the grey water, shielding his eyes with the book, the half of him that's still a person lit gold down one side.
starting to change: golden fur blazing, lengthening, his shape stretching, his shadow going huge across the grey, his legs growing like the trunks of trees.
The river of the dead, colourless from shore to shore, and rising out of the middle of it, standing over two grounded ships and twenty fallen people: a wolf. A colossal golden wolf from the oldest northern tales, taller than the hills of Thanatos, a coat of shaggy blazing gold, the same warm brown eyes. And in its jaws, held gently, a sun: small, white-gold, blazing, not swallowed.
Its light falling on the grey. And everywhere the light falls, colour: the river going river-grey again, the boats of the dead outlined gold, the fallen crew lit warm.
Below it, on the water, small, a tall stooped man with a book, staring up.
lowering its great head over the grounded ships, the sun in its jaws held low, so its light falls on them. On the crew. On everyone it loves, lying in the grey. Standing in the sun.
in the sun's light. The black bar across his mouth smoking. Curling at the edges like paper near a flame. Burning away.
In the sun's light, one after another, the black bars curling up and burning away like paper: off Öde's mouth (the names on her arms darkening back to ink); off Drekk's plate; off Krydog, frozen halfway up; off Emma's chalk; off Roffe's eyes, the amber coming back; off the name on the Marka's bow; off the Upp Igen's bandaged-fist figurehead.
under his arm, smoking. The page with the column of names. Every black line across every name burning off the paper, leaving the names underneath, clear, readable.
looking up at the wolf. The half of him that's grey flinching in the light; the half that's a person looking up at it like a man looking at a sunrise he forgot existed.
The grey on the near shore shuddering, thinning, its edges suddenly drawn with lines: like a fog that's been given an outline. For the first time on any page, the grey of the Null has a shape. A shape can be counted.
in the shallows, his eyes opening, a hand to his chest. Inside him, seventeen voices waking, and one big laugh among them.
beside him, sitting up, her sickle in her one hand, the black glass catching the sun.
lying on his back on the tilted deck, opening his eyes in the gold light. Looking up. At the golden wolf blotting out the grey sky. At the sun in its jaws.
enormous, warm, brown, looking down at him. The same eyes. The same dog.
(The wolf's tail, the size of a ship's mast, moves. Once. Thump.)
All round the grounded ships, the crews stirring in the shallows: eyes opening, colour coming back into faces, hands finding weapons, ladles, chalk, books, tins. Nobody up yet. Everybody remembering.
still frozen halfway up in the grey, kneeling. The bar gone. The silver ring flashing back into both eyes. And the rise that stopped halfway finishing.
on the water, lowering the book. Very quiet.
not finishing the sentence. Taking a step back on the water. The first step back he has ever taken.
sitting up on the deck, Bror under his hand, the birch grip warm, a small voice from it: "Hi." His own eyes going gold, seeing threads, all of them, coming back on, one after another, across two ships, warm, tied, counted.
getting to one knee, looking round at his crew and the other crew in the shallows, in the light of a sun his dog won't swallow.
And on the far shore of Thanatos, past the light, the grey still lying across the hills where the dead used to sit: the half of the realm already taken. Beyond the reach of the sun. Waiting.
sitting up in the shallows, the bar burned off her mouth. Looking past the wolf at the far stands. At the eight seats that went out. Taking a breath to say the first name again.
standing up on the tilted deck of the grounded Marka, in the sun's light, the golden wolf over him, and roaring, the loudest he has ever been, the motto that isn't even his ship's:
Two crews in the shallows of the river of the dead, under a golden wolf holding a sun, every head turning to the boy on the deck.
