Chapter 356
The dark corridor in his chest, warm pictures on its walls, and at the end of it a door opening, and a word walking home through it, bright and green. Its hand brushing the walls as it comes.
Not one picture this time. A whole wall of them: small, warm, all the same shape, hundreds, every one a moment of his mouth saying one word. On a beach at Gate City. In a burning village. Across a deck. In the Arena's stands. In the dark under Thanatos. The same word, every one.
(The word is drawn too small to read.)
passing along that wall. And the pictures coming down, one after another, all of them, the whole wall, like leaves.
(No sound.)
on the cabin porch, a tear running down his face that he doesn't understand, his eyes blazing emerald-white, the ∞−1 glitching gold over his head.
shaking his head, the command in his mouth now, solid, real. Looking out at the hollow: the hunters' palms flat on the snow, the realm going white, the cabin's fire down to embers, the cracked nail in the step.
raising his good hand. Not at the hunters. At the sky, where the black square letters hang: IT WILL BE FINISHED.
and in it, two lights: one grey (an ending), one gold (a reset, a fire relit, a dog's beat again). He looks at them like a merchant weighing two coins.
closing his fingers over both. A grin.
The realm of Heartbeat from above: a cabin in a hollow, rings of hundreds of grey hunters round it with their palms flat on a snowfield going white. And over it all, a pirate on a porch with one hand raised, and from his fist two lights swapping places: the grey ending lifting off the snowfield like a sheet being pulled off a bed, and flying to the hunters; the gold reset lifting off the hunters' own still bodies, where it never belonged, and pouring into the realm.
The amber light rushing back into Heartbeat from the edges inward. The snow falling again, on the beat. The cabin's window blazing: the fire roaring up out of its embers.
And every grey hunter stopping. Finished. Their own ending landed on them.
Hundreds of grey figures standing in rings in the snow, palms still down, perfectly still. Not held. Not frozen. Done. The snow beginning to settle on their heads and shoulders, and this time staying, building up, covering them. Statues in a snowfield.
snow settling on it. And beside it, in the air, the faint grey letters forming one last time, for itself:
DONE.
(And this time they don't un-form.)
The fire roaring, warm, gold, crackling, the rug, the hearth, everything. The beat coming back full.
in the porch step, the strain going out of it, the rust stopping. The pinned beat released: the realm's own beat carrying itself again.
on the line, sagging against her staff, grey strands in her hair, laughing breathlessly.
curled round the porch, its great golden head lifting, looking out at the snow-covered statues, and shrinking in a long fall of gold light back into a golden retriever, who shakes himself, sneezes at the snow, and trots straight up the steps to the boy.
on the step, the pinned beat gone from his chest, his own heart beating its own beat with the dog's again. Breathing. Mingus pushing his head under his arm.
at the rope, looking up at the sky. The black square letters there fading, unfinished, mid-word: IT WILL BE FIN—
The snow falling on the beat over a field of finished statues. The cabin's window bright. The crew on the porch and the steps, battered, alive. The amber light warm on everything. Home.
sitting on the bottom step, still getting her breath, looking up at Vigolas.
flexing his dead arm, life coming back into it now the hunters are finished. Laughing.
in the step, and the iron unfolding back up out of the wood: a gaunt man of iron standing up on the porch, pitted, rust-streaked, a crack down his chest, snow on his flat head. Looking at the fire in the window. The way he always has.
turning to the steps, to his best friend sitting there with the dog's head under his arm. A huge grin, the old one.
looking up, grinning back, wet-eyed.
laughing, opening his mouth to say the name he's said more than any word in his life, the way he always does at the end of a fight: the name, and a hand on the shoulder.
the name not coming. His mouth open. His grin staying where it is for a moment, out of habit, and then slipping.
(No balloon.)
still smiling, waiting. Then not smiling.
staring at him. At the face he knows better than his own. At the gold eyes, the dog, the five guns, the boy who chose him on a beach on the first day. Everything there. Except one word.
a hand going up to his own mouth, as if the word were stuck behind his teeth.
very still on the step, the dog's head under his hand, understanding before Vigolas does. His face going very quiet.
the corridor in his chest drawn faint behind him: a long wall, bare. Hooks where a hundred small warm pictures hung.
on the porch of the warmest place in the world, looking at his best friend with terror in his face.
