Chapter 353
The cabin, the fire frozen in its window for two beats, the hunter on the second step. The rings of grey figures turning their palms toward the eight. Snow hanging in the air round the porch.
on his knees in the snow, a hand pressed to his chest, his heart skipping in time with the cabin. Mingus beside him, whining, his own heart skipping.
Rougeina, eyes on the hunter on the second step: blink. She's on the step; the hunter is where she was, out in the snow, ten paces back. Not touched. Swapped.
The fire moving again. The snow falling again. The beat coming back, late.
breathing again, his heart catching up.
thinking fast.
Isa, going perfectly still in the snow. And everything she can see stopping: the hunters, the snow, the rings. Not finished. Held. The hunters frozen mid-step, palms out, unable to touch anything in a moment that isn't moving.
ISA (no breath; her face very still)
Smurjan, touching Isa's shoulder so he moves inside her held moment, dragging a frozen hunter by its arm off the porch steps, through hanging snow, and leaving it in the field. A statue moved. Not struck.
letting go, gasping.
(The hunters resume, turning their heads, searching for what moved them.)
rising out of Smurjan's shadow, enormous jaws, and closing them on a hunter whole. And stopping: the bite finished before it lands, the maw's jaws hanging open, numb, done.
The hunters moving now: not fast, never fast, but all together, the innermost ring stepping toward the porch, palms out, and wherever they pass the snow stops and the beat of the ground falters.
Lilla Ulv in his hand, firing a wolf-cub ricochet at a hunter's knee. The bullet finished in the air, landing in the snow, spent, a cub-shaped puff of light fading.
standing very still in the middle of it, the coil of rope on her shoulder, looking at the cabin. Measuring. The porch, the woodpile, the walls, the chimney. Round all of it.
turning to Vigolas.
a huge grin through the pain in his arm.
The crew fighting with finished things:
Vigolas, left-handed, hurling logs off the woodpile: each one already cut, already stacked, already done, crashing into hunters and knocking them flat. "That log's been finished since the AUTUMN!"
Rougeina Swapping, Swapping, hunters moved out of the way one per beat, never touched.
Kompis firing not at the hunters but at the snow-laden branches of a pine above them: snow already fallen, crashing down.
Smurjan's shadow wrapping hunters and holding them, not hitting, holding.
The hollow round the cabin in Heartbeat, snow falling on the beat, gold window, rings of grey figures pressing in. And round the cabin, a woman walking: ash staff in one hand, the rope paying out of the coil on her shoulder, laid on the snow behind her in one unbroken line, round the porch, past the woodpile, under the window, round the back wall, round the chimney-stones.
All round her as she walks, the crew holding the hunters off her without touching them: logs flying, snow avalanching off branches, blinks of silver-rose, a dark shadow holding grey arms, a still girl freezing a whole ring in place. And grey palms reaching toward Emma from every side, an inch short, every time.
rounding the last corner of the cabin, the rope's start lying in the snow ahead of her by the porch. And a hunter stepping into her path between her and it, grey palm out.
Mingus hitting the hunter from the side, full tilt, a golden retriever bowling a statue over into the snow. The hunter's palm finding the dog's flank, and finishing nothing. Nothing finishes him.
laying the rope's end down on its beginning in the snow by the porch step. The ends meeting.
A ring of rope round a cabin in the snow. And the ring waking: a faint warm light rising along it, like breath on a cold window, closing round the porch, the woodpile, the walls, the fire.
inside the ring, on the porch, palm on the cabin door. Finishing nothing. The door just a door. The snow on the step falling. The fire in the window going on.
its faceless head turning slowly toward Emma. Its palm on the door doing nothing. For the first time, something like confusion in the tilt of its head.
(No balloon. Faint grey letters in the air beside it, flickering, unable to finish forming: D— )
The crew pouring in over the rope line, careful, stepping, not breaking it, into the ring. The hunters inside it standing like statues, doing nothing, pushed off the porch like furniture. The beat of the cabin steady.
on the porch, his hand flat on the cabin wall. Warm. Real. His heart steady with the fire's.
on the line, staff planted, a grey strand appearing in her hair at the temple. And another.
The hunters, hundreds of them, stopping at the rope. Not crossing. Not needing to. Standing all the way round it in rings, palms out, faceless heads tilted at the cabin.
And beginning, all together, to do something else.
where the hunters stand. The ground's beat under them slowing. The snow falling slower. Slower. A long gap between beats.
feeling it, his heart slowing with the realm's, a hand on his chest.
right above Kompis's head on the porch. Shaking. Creaking. Bleeding rust down the doorframe in a long thin line.
looking up at it. At the dented square head. At the glow behind the rust.
The nail moving. Turning in the wood, slowly, like a screw backing out, the lintel splintering round it, rust pouring out, an inch, two inches of iron sliding free of the wood it's been driven into since the night the cabin was first lit.
a dark square hole where the nail was. And the nail falling, past Kompis's face, toward the snow, and in the falling, growing.
(No balloon.)
