Chapter 352
The allied flock on the silver road, and at the Marka's stern, Fyren's little dinghy being lowered on a line. In it, already: Kompis, Mingus in the bow. Climbing down after them: Vigolas, Rougeina, Smurjan, Isa, and from the Upp Igen, Emma with her ash staff and a coil of rope over her shoulder.
at the Upp Igen's rail with the new fist-figurehead beside him.
at the Marka's wheel.
The dinghy cast off, Isa and Smurjan at the oars, sliding off the silver Twelfth Road onto the thin amber road branching east into the dark. The fleet's lanterns falling behind.
A thread of warm light on black water, and the air changing as they row: getting warmer, smelling of woodsmoke and pine and wet dog. Snow beginning to fall out of a clear sky. Slow. Gold where the road's light catches it.
in the bow, nose up, eyes half shut, tail going slowly, the way it goes when he hears the word home.
falling. And falling in time: not drifting. Each flake landing on the water on a beat, all of them together, flp, flp, flp, like a slow pulse.
The amber road ending at a shore. A white snowfield running up from black water under a sky of soft amber light, no sun, no stars, just warm light everywhere, like being inside a lantern. And the ground, the whole white field, swelling very slightly, once, and settling. Like a chest breathing.
stepping out of the dinghy onto the snow. Stopping. His hand going to his chest.
leaping out beside him into the snow, and the two of them, boy and dog, drawn with their heartbeats visible through coat and fur: the same rhythm, exactly, one beat.
The eight of them walking up from the shore through knee-deep snow, Mingus in front, breaking trail. The snow falling on the beat. The amber light. And over the rise ahead, a thread of woodsmoke, rising straight up into the still air.
beside Kompis, quiet.
Over the rise: a hollow in the snow, and in it, the cabin. Pine logs, a low snowy roof, a stone chimney with smoke going straight up, a window full of gold firelight. A woodpile. A porch with two steps. A door with a rusted nail in the lintel. Snow falling round it on the beat, slow and endless. The warmest thing anyone in this book has ever seen.
And round it, at the edge of the firelight, in ring after ring after ring, hundreds of grey figures: faceless, still, snow on their shoulders. And under their feet, the snow not falling: a white ring of stillness in a world of slow gold snow.
On the rise, eight small figures and a dog, stopping.
nearer. Up close, they're not quite people: grey like unpainted plaster, smooth, faceless, their hands at their sides, their outlines sharp in a way nothing in Heartbeat is. Like statues of the end of something.
COMPLETION-HUNTER · unranked · the Arbiter's
eyes gold. No threads on them. And from each of them, faint, a line reaching toward the cabin, thin and straight as a ruled line on a page, all of them meeting at the cabin's door.
a blade out, its mirror showing the snowfield empty: no hunters, no cabin, no them. Flickering back.
of hunters, at the foot of the porch steps. And one of them moving: lifting a grey foot, slowly, and setting it down on the bottom step of the cabin's porch.
under the grey foot. The snow on it stopping. Not melting, not settling: stopping, mid-fall, a flake hanging in the air above the step and not moving.
Inside, the fire. And for one beat, the fire freezing: the flames hanging still, like a painting of a fire.
his hand flying to his chest. His heart skipping, the same beat. Mingus beside him yelping, his heartbeat skipping with it.
the fire moving again, flickering, warm. The flake above the step falling again. The reset catching up. The beat coming late.
very pale.
lightning crawling up his arms, already moving down the slope.
Vigolas charging down into the hollow through the snow, an Emerald Knuckle winding up, straight at the hunter on the step.
The hunter turning its faceless head, not moving otherwise, and lifting one grey hand, palm out, as the green fist comes in. Touching the lightning.
an inch from the grey palm, and stopping. Not blocked. Finished. The punch completed, its force spent, its lightning gone out, as if it had already landed somewhere else, a long time ago. His arm hanging in the air, dead, the motion over.
its faceless face tilted at him, mild, almost curious. And on the snow between them, in the air, faint grey letters in a hand no one wrote:
DONE.
Vigolas staggering back through the snow, his right arm numb and limp, unable to throw that punch, or any punch, with it, for a moment, as if his arm had already used up all its punches.
The rings of grey figures, hundreds, turning their faceless heads together toward the eight intruders in the hollow. Not attacking. Just looking. And every one of them lifting one grey hand, palm out, toward everything that isn't finished.
turning back to the door. Lifting its other foot. Setting it down on the second step.
Inside, the fire freezing again. One beat. Two. The flames still as paint. Snow hanging in the air outside the glass. And above the door, the rusted nail in the lintel shaking, creaking, bleeding a thin line of rust down the doorframe.
