Chapter 351
A road of silver light laid on the black sea, overgrown with grey thorns that the fleet's bows push through. Behind the Marka and the Upp Igen, the allied flock strung out for miles, lanterns like a city on the water. Overhead, faint: THE CONVERGENCE. ONE MATCH.
Sleeping-rings in chalk on the planks, every sleeper inside one. And in one ring, Kompis, asleep on his side with Mingus pressed against his back, the dog's head on his hip.
A cabin of pine logs in deep snow. A lit window. Inside, a fire. A rug by the hearth. Snow falling, slow, endless, gold in the window-light. The colour of it fierce against the white creeping into every other sleeper's dream on the deck around him.
Kompis's dream-self walking up through the snow to the door, the way he has a thousand times. A rusted iron nail in the lintel above it, the way it always is. The latch. The warmth leaking out under the door.
Kompis's hand on the latch. And stopping. Turning his head.
The snowfield round the cabin. And standing in it, at the edge of the firelight, all the way round, in perfect rows, still, grey: figures. Hundreds of them. No faces. No breath steaming. Snow settling on their shoulders and not melting.
(No balloon.)
frozen at the door, staring at them. His eyes going gold, even in the dream, seeing the grey figures' threads: none. They just end, like a sentence with a full stop.
at the front of the rows, turning its faceless head toward him. Slowly. And taking one step forward through the snow. And the snow under its foot not crunching. Just stopping falling, where the foot comes down.
where the grey figure stepped: white. Not snow-white. The white that's been eating everyone's dreams. A patch of it in the corner of the one dream it never touched.
inside it the fire flickering, low, as if a door had opened somewhere and let the cold in.
A small cabin of pine logs in deep snow at the centre of a realm of amber light, its window gold, smoke rising from its chimney, snow falling slow and endless. A place so warm and still it looks painted.
And round it, in perfect rings, the way an army circles a city: hundreds of grey figures, faceless, still, snow on their shoulders, standing in the snowfield at the edge of the firelight. Waiting for something. And where the front ring stands, the snow under them has stopped falling.
Above the cabin's door, very small, a rusted iron nail in the lintel. Trembling.
(No balloon.)
in the dream, trembling, and a faint creak coming from it, like old iron in cold.
looking up at the nail for the first time in a thousand dreams. Seeing it. A dented square head. And behind the rust, a faint glow, like firelight reflected.
creaking again, longer. A sound like a word that hasn't been used in a very long time.
staring.
the white spreading from the grey figures' feet in toward the cabin, the snowfall stopping in a widening ring, the firelight in the window dimming.
Kompis jerking awake in his chalk ring on the Marka's deck, gasping, sitting bolt upright, Mingus already on his feet beside him, hackles up, growling at nothing, at the east, at a direction no compass has.
staring east into the dark, growling low. Whining. Scratching once at the deck with one paw as if he wants to dig through it to somewhere.
waking in the next ring, sitting up, seeing his face.
The crew waking round him: Vigolas, Rougeina, Smurjan, Isa, Trollmage half asleep. Kompis on his knees with a hand on the dog.
very awake.
quietly.
putting it together, the letters in the sky behind him.
looking east. His jaw tight.
her blade half drawn, its mirror flickering, empty, then back.
standing up. Mingus pressing against his leg, trembling, growling east.
a breath. A short wet laugh.
at the rail, looking down at the road of light under the ship. At its edges, where it branches: thinner roads splitting off, silver threads on the water, leading away to every side.
of amber light branching off the Twelfth Road into the dark to the east, so faint it's almost not there. Smelling, very faintly, of woodsmoke.
Kompis at the bow, Mingus beside him with his nose pointed east down the faint amber road, every hair on his back standing up.
his eyes gold, looking down the road toward a place he has only ever dreamed of.
