Chapter 354
a hand's length of rusted iron tumbling past Kompis's face toward the snow, and lengthening as it falls: a bar, a beam, a shape.
The iron landing in the snow at the foot of the steps standing up: unfolding upward like a hinge, rust flaking off it in sheets, into a man. Tall, gaunt, as if hammered out of a single long bar. Long arms. A seam for a mouth. The top of his head hammered flat, crowded with the dents of a thousand strikes.
standing in the snow. Rusted orange-brown flaking over black. Two rivet-holes for eyes, a warm glow inside them: the cabin's firelight, reflected, always. Snow already settling on his flat head and shoulders.

under his iron feet, and the wood blackening in a ring round him, spreading out from where he stands like a stain.
walking straight up to the iron man, unafraid, tail going, and sniffing his knee. Thoroughly. The way he'd sniff at the door every beat.
staring up at him.
turning his rivet-eyes on Kompis. The firelight in them flickering.
behind them, his dead arm hanging, lightning in the other.
The hunters in their hundreds standing at the rope, and the realm's beat under them slowing, the snowfall slowing, a long, long gap between beats. The amber light of Heartbeat dimming at its edges.
looking out at it. At the slowing. Very still.
(He means it.)
turning to Kompis.
a hand on his chest. On his heart, beating in time with a dog's. With a fire's.
The porch of the cabin in Heartbeat. A gaunt man of iron becoming a nail mid-stride: his whole length narrowing, hardening, flattening into one long square spike, and driving himself down through the porch boards through Kompis's shadow where it falls on the step, deep into the root that runs under the cabin. The boards blackening round him in a ring.
And Kompis standing over the nail, his heart drawn through his chest, one beat of it lit up gold, held.
And beyond the porch, beyond the ring, out across the whole snowfield of Heartbeat, the realm's slowing beat catching on that one held beat and repeating it: the same good beat, again, again, again, steady, the snow falling on it, the amber light holding.
in the porch step, square-headed, dented, rust running from its head like a nosebleed. Glowing faintly behind the rust.
his heart beating the same beat over and over: not stuck, kept. His face going calm, warm, strangely young.
The hunters at the rope, palms out, trying to finish the realm's beat, and the beat coming back, the same one, every time they finish it. Their faceless heads tilting. Confused. The faint grey letters forming in the air beside each of them, DONE, and un-forming, again and again.
and rust welling up round it, thicker, orange, the iron pitting as they watch.
crouching by the nail on the step, his dead arm in his lap.
on the porch rail, looking out at the hunters.
The hunters giving up on the realm's beat. Standing still. Turning, all together, their faceless heads sweeping the hollow for anything else in progress. Anything unfinished outside the ring.
outside the rope, out in the snow on the far side of the cabin where she went to hold a ring of hunters off Emma's walk. Still holding them. Perfectly still. Not breathing. Her lips going blue. Alone out there.
(No balloon. She can't.)
on the porch, seeing her. Seeing her thread, out past the rope, thin, straining, and every grey head in the hollow turning toward it.
every one of them, lifting, turning toward the girl in the snow who is holding her breath. The longest thing in progress in the whole hollow.
held still, her eyes the only thing alive in her face, seeing them turn. Seeing them come. Knowing that if she breathes, they move, and if she doesn't, they finish her.
(Her time in the panel corner: 2:11… 2:12…)
on the line, gripping her staff.
already moving. Down the porch steps. Toward the rope.
at the rope, one foot raised over it. Looking back at the cabin. At the nail in the step. At the girl in the snow.
Kompis stepping over the rope and running out into the snow toward Isa, Ivar in one hand, Bror in the other, Mingus bounding at his side, the hunters' heads swinging from the girl to the boy as he crosses the hollow: the boy whose heartbeat is pinned to the cabin.
A boy and a dog running through slow gold snow toward a still girl, and from every side of the hollow, grey palms turning toward him, faceless heads tilting, the rings of hunters closing like a hand.
still holding, 2:30, seeing Kompis come, her eyes going wide in a face that can't move. Trying to warn him with her eyes.
reaching out of the closing ring toward the back of Kompis's running head. An inch away. And the faint grey letters beginning to form in the air beside it, slow, certain:
