Chapter 382
The haze settling, the way sand settles when it's poured into a mould nobody can see: thickening at the bottom first, then climbing. Shapes inside it slowing down.
Each shape in it freezing in grey-white, like plaster, like frost: a fist an inch from a jaw. A body halfway to the ground. A sword at the top of its swing. A man on his knees with one hand raised. A woman stepping backward off an edge. Each one stopped at the last instant of a match, and packed against the next.
It stands at the centre of the floor, taller than the Arena's walls, its shadow lying across the whole bowl. It is built of frozen final moments, thousands upon thousands, packed together like the stones of a cathedral: last blows for shoulders, falling bodies for ribs, raised fists stacked into arms, a column of bowed heads for a spine. Its feet stand on the living bark. Its head, vast and bowed, rises level with the top rows of the stands.
And where a face should be, there is no face. There is a moment, flickering, the instant just before something ends.
At its feet, very small: five figures and a dog.
In the stands of the living, ten thousand people not breathing.
looking up at it. Five faces turned up into its shadow. Each one going still in a different way.
A wall of black water at the very top of its rise, curling, the instant before it breaks over a red-sailed ship with a six-winged figurehead. Gold in her hold. A young captain at her wheel, steering into it.
A doorway full of fire, and a roof beam above it, burning, the instant before it falls.
(His hand goes to the coin-tear in his beard.)
A great mirror in a white room, and in its corner, the very first hair of a crack, the instant before it runs.
An old woman walking up out of the surf on a grey beach, in a body far too old for her, the instant before her knees give.
(Rougeina's hands close on two of the hilts behind her shoulders. She doesn't draw.)
A hand on the last page of a book, the instant before the page turns and there are no more.
A tall gaunt woman in mourning grey with a cypress-green blindfold and a cloud of thin white braids tied with lead name-tags: Ögar, her bell-staff across her knees. She turned her head toward the centre a beat before the haze became a figure. Beside her, a hooded lookout with a patch and a long brass rifle across the rail: Perne, with no Perch to sit in.
A long-limbed woman in a tunic split down the middle, ink-black and violet on one side, star-black and crimson on the other: Orka, both hands open at her chest as if carrying something hot, the magenta light between her fingers guttering, her face greyer and older than it should be, so far from her star.
Letters forming, one at a time, slow and deliberate. Black square letters, hard-edged, no tail, written by no hand:
THE CALLED HAVE ANSWERED.
THE MATCH IS THE CONVERGENCE.
YOU MAY FIGHT. YOU MAY REFUSE. YOU MAY NOT LEAVE.
RULES ONE TO FOUR STAND.
FIVE, SIX AND SEVEN WILL BE READ WHEN THEY ARE REACHED.
in three thin panels, each reacting to the same line.
(Kompis and Rougeina look at each other across the floor. They saw half of Six once. Neither says so.)
writing slower now, heavier, each one landing like a stamp on stone:
THE OUTCOME WILL BE WRITTEN.
the heaviest yet:
A MATCH ENDS WHEN ONE STANDS.
the words sinking in, one face at a time.
sitting at Kompis's heel, looking up at the letters with his head on one side. A low, thoughtful sound.
the verdict cube humming loud enough to rattle the others against it. Vigolas pulling it out and holding it up at the figure, on his palm, between two fingers.
flickering, giving him the wave again. And the letters, ignoring him entirely:
BEGIN.
Nobody moves. Five figures standing a long way apart on a floor of bark, a dog sitting down, a cathedral of endings over them, ten thousand people holding their breath in the stands. High in the stands of the living, one grey woman with an iron-grey crop isn't holding hers: she is drawing a whetstone down a straight sword with no guard. A long, long beat.
putting the cube away, raising one hand, cheerful as a man ordering a drink.
cold:
A YIELD BEFORE A BLOW IS NOT A YIELD.
her jaw tightening. She has read that sentence before, in a field built from two burning memories.
doing something the crew rarely sees: thinking. Then the grin coming back, slow, wide.
his third eye still shut.
looking up at the figure, his hand on Mingus's head.
Krydog leaning so far over it Roffe has a fist in the back of his coat. Daniel beside him, watching the floor the way a clerk reads a contract.
Vigolas turning to the south-east, spreading his arms wide, presenting his chest. And all round the edge of the floor, very faintly, the bark tilting a degree inward, the whole bowl leaning in to watch.
unhooking the brass chain of his Codex with a sigh, the crow lifting off his head, and his heavy-lidded eyes opening for once, all the way, blazing violet: days and days of waiting, all of it lit.
