Chapter 1
A small black-sailed pirate ship, lanterns swinging, climbs the face of a wave forty metres high. Lightning cracks green on the horizon.
The crew is screaming, clinging to ropes, being thrown overboard. At the wheel, lashed to it with his own belt, stands CAPTAIN VIGOLAS: dark windswept hair, emerald eyes, midnight-green coat. He is not screaming. He is looking up.
The wave is not what is reflected in them. Gold coins, torn loose from the flooded hold, glitter in the spray around the ship.
The wave comes down.
Vigolas sinks with his eyes open. A single gold coin drifts past his face, and he reaches for it.
A thin heartbeat line runs across the page and goes flat.
The trees have no leaves, only pale bark. Footprints press into the moss with nobody making them, until they stop at a stump. FENNA sits there with an open book across her knees: plain grey coat, a face that looks like it has never been surprised. Vigolas stands in front of her, soaked and barefoot, dripping onto moss that does not get wet.
She turns the book toward him. Columns of names, each with a mark beside it.
His name is there: VIGOLAS. In the rank column, the ink will not settle. K-I… K-IV… K-?… scrolls and glitches, then burns into a symbol nobody prints:
∞−1
For the first time her expression changes, very slightly.
She closes the book. The forest starts to fade behind Vigolas.
Wreckage everywhere. Vigolas gasps awake on the sand, coughing seawater. Up on the cliffs stands a harbour city, and in its centre rises a colossal glowing board taller than a cathedral, crawling with millions of names and numbers: the Scalelist.
Three figures land around him in a spray of sand: TRISDEL SENTINELS in white armour with faceless helmets, glowing collars at their throats and spears of hard light.
RANK PLATE ×3: SENTINEL · K-II MARKED · Scalelist #211,904
Standing up, dripping, grinning.
(a) A spear of light stabs where his head was. He is already gone.
(b) He rips a broken oar out of the wreckage.
(c) The world through his eyes: everything glows by value. Sand is grey, the spears are dull silver, and the seam of one Sentinel's collar burns gold, the most expensive part of him.
The oar smashes the gold seam. The collar shatters, and the Sentinel drops like a puppet with its strings cut.
The other two Sentinels lash chains of light around his arms and throat and drag him to his knees. One raises a judgement-blade over his neck. Close on Vigolas's eye: a spark of green lightning wakes inside it. A voice that is his and not his, from a life before this one:
Vigolas, on his knees, opens one hand.
Green lightning explodes outward. Space folds. Both Sentinels, their chains, a ton of sand and the breaking surf are crushed inward from every direction into a perfect, humming cube the size of a fist, which drops onto the beach.
Vigolas picks up the cube and turns it in the light, admiring it. A Sentinel's tiny helmet is visible inside, pressed like a flower in glass.
His smile falters. He looks out at the wreckage of his ship.
·
Nothing. He cannot find it. He touches his temple like something is missing from it.
On the colossal board, a new line burns into existence among millions. The crowds on the city walls are pointing at it:
∞−1 · UNNUMBERED
He pockets the cube and looks at the board the way he looked at the gold in the storm.
Bookshelves, a fireplace and a white-haired man with a kind, grandfatherly face, signing a document with an ornate silver pen. Beside it lies a birthday card he has just signed with the same pen: "To little Edda, seven years old!"
BALDR · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Three, Keeper of the Engagement Protocol
He slides the document across the desk to a masked aide, still smiling.
