Chapter 34

The Brightest Hole
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, the ridge above Vrångö.

Hrafnkell rises out of the long grass and stands, tall and unhurried, brushing seeds off his ledger-coat.

P2CLOSE, Mingus

in the middle of his new pack on the beach. His head snaps up toward the ridge. His lip curls. A low growl. Every hound around him turns its head the same way.

P3CLOSE, Vigolas

on Old Bengt's rock, following Mingus's look up to the ridge.

VIGOLAS
…Oh, you.
PAGE 2
P4WIDE.

Hrafnkell walks down the slope on two legs, hands loose, like a man coming to collect a parcel. Two hundred and twelve misrouted souls shrink back from him.

HRAFNKELL
Captain.
VIGOLAS
How's the jaw?
HRAFNKELLtouching the purple bruise
Learning.
P5CLOSE, Hrafnkell

stopping at the foot of the ridge.

HRAFNKELL
I lost you once, you know. At the Archive. You went in, you came out, and I followed your trail to the door and found nothing.
HRAFNKELL
I was smelling for something. That was my mistake.
P6CLOSE, Hrafnkell

nostrils wide.

HRAFNKELL
I've spent every day since then learning to smell nothing.
PAGES 3–4 — SPLASH (double page)
P7SPLASH. THE BRIGHTEST HOLE. Hrafnkell's scent-sight.

The beach as a hound smells it. Colour is gone; the world is drawn in smells.

Every soul on the beach is a smudge of ink, with columns of tiny numbers rising off it like smoke from a chimney. The misrouted are drawn in smeared ink, their numbers crossed out and rewritten and crossed out again. Kompis is ink and gunpowder. Rougeina is ink with a long trail of roses behind her. Smurjan is three overlapping smudges in one outline. Mingus is nothing at all: a clean, warm, dog-shaped blank, not even a gap, just dog.

And on the rock in the middle of it all is Vigolas: not ink, not smoke, but a hole in the world, a torn-out place blazing white, so bright that every other smell bends toward it, like a lighthouse in fog.

HRAFNKELLsmall, at the edge of the spread
The brightest thing I've ever smelled.

P8WIDE.

Out of the drift-bank, the Tally glides into view just off the beach. On her iron plate, Saltbrand raises his branding iron.

P9ACTION.

A wall of white fire sweeps up the beach and curls around, closing in a great ring around the two hundred and twelve, and around Kompis, Rougeina and Smurjan among them. Vigolas, up on Old Bengt's rock, is outside it.

SALTBRANDfrom the Tally, flat
What dies in there stays dead.
P10CLOSE, Vigolas.

He's already moving.

VIGOLAS
No you don't—
PAGE 6
P11CLOSE, Hrafnkell's throat

the scratched silver tag swinging.

HRAFNKELL
Audit.
P12WIDE.

The howl rolls across the beach in ruled lines. Iron plates slam down on the crew inside the ring:

KOMPIS · K-II MARKED · Scalelist #3,107

ROUGEINA · K-III TESTED · Scalelist #777

SMURJAN · K-IV SHAPED · Scalelist #2,201

On Smurjan, the plate clamps down and Kali and Bakasura are crushed back into his shadow. One body. One plate. He's alone in there.

AAAAWOOOOOOOOOOOOO
P13INSET, far out on the water, the Marka's deck.

Trollmage, lying by his sign (WAITING. DAY 3.), jerks as an iron plate falls across his chest. His finger twitches toward the air to write. He clenches his hand shut.

TROLLMAGEthrough his teeth
Not this time.
PAGE 7
P14ACTION, inside the ring.

The fire is closing, a pace at a time. A washed-up fisherman's shed at the ring's edge catches, and its burning mast tips toward Old Bengt and Lova, who are clinging to each other.

P15CLOSE, Kompis

hand on Mingus.

KOMPIS
Subtick.
P16GREY WORLD, seven afterimages.

In one he saves Bengt and Lova dies. In one he saves Lova and Bengt dies. In one he runs for Vigolas, and the mast comes down on Bengt and Lova together. Four more, worse. Then the grey snaps back.

VIGOLASfrom outside the ring, yelling
The girl! Kompis, the GIRL!
P17ACTION, colour.

Kompis keeps the seventh. His shot shatters the burning mast in mid-fall, and he throws himself over both of them as the pieces rain down. A burning splinter scores his back.

TAK — KRRSSH
KOMPIS
…Both. I got both.
PAGE 8
P18ACTION.

Vigolas hurls himself off the rock at the Tally, straight through the howl. The ruled lines bend around him like water. Greed-sight: the ring of fire is grey, and its one weak point glows gold, out on the Tally's deck: Saltbrand.

P19CLOSE, Hrafnkell.

He snaps his jaws shut on the howl in mid-breath. The ruled lines in the air vanish.

P20ACTION.

In the same breath, he pulls something from inside his coat and throws it: a chain of pale ledger-light, but its links are empty, each one a ring around nothing.

HRAFNKELL
Every chain in the Registry holds a number.
HRAFNKELL
I had this one made for a hole.
PAGE 9
P21IMPACT.

The chain doesn't go for Vigolas's body. It whips up over his head and snaps tight around the faint, flickering ∞−1 above him, like a collar closing around a halo.

KLINK
P22ACTION.

Vigolas's body jerks to a stop in mid-leap, as if he'd hit the end of a rope, and slams into the sand.

P23CLOSE, Vigolas's hands.

Two more lengths of the empty chain whip around his wrists and clamp his fists shut. He strains to open his hands. Green lightning sputters between his knuckles and can't get out.

VIGOLAS
…Oh, that's rude.
PAGE 10
P24WIDE.

The other end of the chain runs back out over the water to the Tally, where Bastion guards throw themselves on the capstan and start to turn it.

KLAK — KLAK — KLAK — KLAK
P25ACTION.

Vigolas digs his heels into the sand and pulls back. For a moment, the whole Tally lurches toward the shore. The guards on the capstan skid. Then he begins to slide, plowing a deep trench down the beach with his boots.

P26CLOSE, Hrafnkell

walking alongside him, hands in his pockets, quite calm.

HRAFNKELL
You could open your hand and fold me into a cube, if you could open your hand.
HRAFNKELL
That's the trouble with hands.
PAGE 11
P27ACTION, inside the ring.

The howl is gone and the plates have lifted, but the ring of salt-fire is still closing. Kali bursts out of Smurjan's shadow, one-armed, and Bakasura's maw rises behind her, but neither can go near the white flames.

P28POV, Smurjan's third eye.

The ring as a diagram. Every flame is drawn. Between two of them, low to the sand, there's a gap no wider than a man's shoulders. It's opening and closing as the fire breathes.

P29ACTION.

Smurjan goes through the gap with a child under each arm, comes back, goes through again. Rougeina, Swapping with the burning shed's falling planks to knock them away from the crowd, glances down the beach at Vigolas being dragged toward the water.

ROUGEINA
Vigolas!
PAGE 12
P30CLOSE, Vigolas

being dragged into the starlight surf, sand and light spraying around him. He twists to look back at them.

VIGOLAS
STAY WITH THEM!
VIGOLAS
Keep them SAFE! That's an order!
P31CLOSE, Rougeina

a blade already in her hand, her weight already shifting to Swap.

P32CLOSE, Vigolas

chin-deep in surf, grinning through it.

VIGOLAS
They're ours, Rougeina!
VIGOLAS
…And somebody feed the dogs!
P33CLOSE, Rougeina.

She lowers the blade. She turns her back on him, and walks back into the fire-ring to lead the next family out. It costs her everything to do it.

PAGE 13
P34WIDE.

The Tally's capstan hauls Vigolas up out of the surf and over the rail like a netted shark. The ring of salt-fire on the beach dies as Saltbrand lowers his branding iron. Every last one of the two hundred and twelve is outside it.

P35MID, the Tally's deck.

Bastion guards chain Vigolas to the foot of the mainmast with the empty chain. The ∞−1 above his head is still collared in Ledger-light. Hrafnkell strips off Vigolas's midnight-green coat and holds it up, sniffing the lining.

HRAFNKELL
Pieces of my Archive. Sewn into a pirate's coat.
VIGOLAS
Careful with that. It's got my things in it.
P36CLOSE.

Hrafnkell hangs the coat high on the mast above Vigolas's head, out of reach, like a trophy. The Tally turns, and slides into the drift-bank fog.

PAGE 14
P37WIDE, the Tally's quarterdeck, dusk in the fog.

On a brass lectern stands an open book of white pages. Hrafnkell lays his palm on it, and a projection rises out of the pages in pale light: a tall, thin man in slate-blue robes, iron-grey and tired, standing very straight. On his breast glows the crest of a closed gate.

P38MID.

Hrafnkell drops to one knee. Saltbrand, on his iron plate, bows his crusted head.

HRAFNKELL
Architect Ten.
P39CLOSE, the projection

looking past them at the man chained to the mast.

ARCHITECT TEN
So that's the thief.
PAGE 15
P40CLOSE, Vigolas

chained, coatless, cheerful.

VIGOLAS
Hello! Love the crest. Very closed.
P41CLOSE, Architect Ten.

No smile.

ARCHITECT TEN
You walked into my Archive, and you walked out again with pieces of it. And the Ledger can't even write down your number.
P42CLOSE, Vigolas.
VIGOLAS
I'm keeping them, by the way. The pieces. Greed keeps everything.
PAGE 16
P43MID.

Hrafnkell rises and lays one hand on the empty chain at the mast, the way a hunter lays a hand on the deer.

HRAFNKELL
The man the Ledger can't hold.

(He glances up at the projection.)

HRAFNKELL
The Architect wants him held anyway.
P44CLOSE, Architect Ten.
ARCHITECT TEN
Bring him to the Registry, Hrafnkell. Him, and the coat.
ARCHITECT TEN
Do this, and I'll unseal what I sealed.
P45CLOSE, Hrafnkell.

Something flinches in his face, quickly, like an old wound touched. His hand goes, without his meaning it to, to the silver tag at his throat with the scratched-out number.

HRAFNKELL
…Yes, Architect.

The projection folds back into the pages and is gone.

PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P46WIDE, the Marka's deck, night

anchored off Vrångö. The crew, sooty and burned, stand at the rail looking at the fog. Two hundred and twelve people sleep on the beach behind them, a pack of grey hounds curled among them.

P47KOMPIS'S SOUL-SIGHT.

One golden thread runs from Kompis's chest out over the starlight and into the fog, thin and stretched and holding.

KOMPIS
I can still see him.
ROUGEINA
Then we go. Now.
SMURJAN
Into the howl again? We're paper in there.
P48MID.

Behind them, Trollmage sits up, slowly. He picks up his sign, wipes WAITING. DAY 3. off its face with his sleeve, and paints one word across it in soot:

AWAKE.

P49FINAL PANEL, close on Trollmage

the crow on his shoulder, holding up the index shard on its string. Its sleeping lights wake one by one in violet.

TROLLMAGE
Then we find out what's written on his paper.
