Chapter 35
Fog glittering like frost on the starlight. The Marka creeps through it with her sails furled, Drekk at the wheel, Kompis beside him with his eyes half-closed.
Trollmage sits cross-legged with his book open in his lap and the index shard glowing violet on its string, reading. The crow is asleep on his head. His sign stands beside him: AWAKE. Under it, small: (day 4).
crouched together on the deck around a lantern.
Drekk rolls a row of casks to the rail and knocks the lids loose.
crouching to Mingus, forehead against his.
Vigolas sits chained at the foot of the mainmast, his fists clamped shut in empty links, the collar of Ledger-light around the ∞−1 above his head. High on the mast above him hangs his coat. Curled at his feet like a dog in front of a fire, Hrafnkell is asleep.
On his iron plate a few paces off, Saltbrand stands awake, staring out at the starlight.
A long silence. A few grains of salt flake from the dry corners of his eyes and drift to the plate.
Out of the fog, the Marka's bow looms up alongside. Blink: Rougeina is on the Tally's yardarm, blades out, the panther landing beside her.
Kompis, on the Marka's rail with Mingus, fires. A Bastion guard's spear snaps in half.
Smurjan leaps the gap between the ships and lands on the Tally's deck in a crouch, three shadows unfolding behind him.
Drekk swings the Marka's wheel hard and the two hulls grind together.
His eyes are open before the noise is over.
the scratched tag swinging.
The howl rolls over both ships. Iron plates slam down:
ROUGEINA · K-III TESTED · Scalelist #777
KOMPIS · K-II MARKED · Scalelist #3,107
SMURJAN · K-IV SHAPED · Scalelist #2,201, and Kali and Bakasura are crushed back into his shadow.
TROLLMAGE · K-II MARKED (assigned) · Scalelist #120,331, falling across Trollmage's shoulders at the Marka's bow, flattening him to the deck.
Vigolas, chained, unchanged.
flat on the deck under the weight, his violet runes flickering with four days of waiting, his finger aching to write. He makes a fist.
Saltbrand sweeps his branding iron, and sheets of white fire roll across the Tally's deck at Smurjan.
Smurjan, alone, no Kali, no Bakasura, fights inside the fire. His third eye reads every flame and his body passes through the gaps between them: a hand's breadth here, a finger's breadth there. He doesn't touch a single flame, and he can't get close.
From the Marka's rail, Drekk heaves a bucket of sweet water. It splashes the edge of Saltbrand's iron plate. He snarls and steps back, his boot hissing.
Rougeina Swaps at Hrafnkell, blink, ten paces, all she's got, and he's already turned, nose first, following her trail.
He catches her wrist and slams her into the rail.
Kompis on the Marka's rail: seven afterimages, seven shots at Hrafnkell, seven misses. The grey snaps shut.
Rougeina pinned under his arm.
cheek on the Marka's deck under his plate, the index shard glowing an inch from his eye. He isn't looking at the fight. He's thinking.
the howl blazing out of Hrafnkell's throat, every plate slamming down around him, and his own plate nowhere.
Hrafnkell snapping his jaws shut on the howl, then throwing the chain.
lifting the shard to his eye with a hand that weighs a ton.
Inside it, the seventy-seven sleeping lights. His breath fogs the glass, and one light wakes, and a drawer of light slides out of it, as if from a filing cabinet, holding one frozen decision.
drawn like a page sealed with wax:
HRAFNKELL, the Ledger-Hound. Registry Defence.
SEALED by order of Architect Ten. Not to be shown on any board.
He reads it twice. Then, slowly, for the first time since the slipway, he grins.
He pushes himself up off the deck. The iron plate on his shoulders is heavy enough to bend him double. He gets one knee under him. His arms shake.
teeth gritted, sweat running down the violet runes.
He stands, under the plate, bent like an old man, at the Marka's bow rail, facing the Tally.
filling his lungs.
On both decks, for one heartbeat, everything stops. Even Saltbrand's fire seems to hold its breath.
holding up the glowing shard.
the branding iron lowering an inch. He turns his crusted head toward his leader.
His face goes white, then dark. His hand closes around the silver tag at his throat as if he could hide it.
to his crew, fast now:
The empty chain at the mast has a thread of its own, and it runs straight back to Hrafnkell's throat. While the howl is ringing, one link of it is fraying, gold strands unwinding.
Mingus pressed hard against his leg.
GREY WORLD, seven afterimages, each one firing at a different link. On the seventh, the frayed one cracks.
Rougeina twists out of Hrafnkell's grip and Swaps: blink. Ten paces. Exactly ten. She's at the foot of the mast, and her mirror-steel blade goes straight through the cracked link.
The collar of Ledger-light around ∞−1 shatters like glass. The empty links around Vigolas's wrists fall away. His fists open. Green lightning floods into both palms.
still bent under his plate, calling across to the hound.
cornered, proud, furious. He chooses.
He snaps his jaws shut. The howl dies. The plates lift off everyone at once.
Hrafnkell at full rank is fast: he's across the deck at Vigolas before the plates have finished vanishing.
standing straight now, the weight gone. His violet runes blaze all at once, four days of waiting lighting him up like a lantern. He writes in the air with one finger, unhurried:
MACRO : STONE = 4 DAYS
The Tally turns to stone. From the keel upward, grey troll-stone spreads through her like frost over a window: through the bleached bark of the hull, up the white iron of the bow, across the deck under Saltbrand's iron plate, up the masts. The white sails go grey and heavy and crack like slate. All along her flanks, carved troll faces bloom out of the stone with their eyes closed, like the faces on the cliffs of home.
The ship groans like a mountain and begins to sink into the starlight.
The crew leap for the Marka: Kompis with Mingus in his arms, Smurjan with a guard he's pulled out of the fire, the panther with Rougeina's sleeve in its teeth.
And in the middle of it all, Vigolas is running up the mainmast as the stone climbs it beneath his boots, snatching his midnight-green coat off its peg one heartbeat before the stone reaches it.
He leaps from the masthead, coat in one hand, and with the other, wrapped in green lightning, meets Hrafnkell coming up after him in mid-air, square on the jaw, on the same bruise.
Hrafnkell drops into the starlight beside the sinking stone ship. Out of the fog, the Tally's little bark jolly-boat, which hung over her stern and isn't part of her, drifts free, and Saltbrand is in it, hooking Hrafnkell out of the light by his collar with the branding iron. They slide away into the fog.
Trollmage falls flat on his back, spent, his runes dark. Vigolas lands beside him, hauls him up into a bear hug, and lifts him off his feet.
The last stone mast slides under. Where the Tally sank, the starlight is slowly turning grey, as if ash were rising through it from somewhere very deep. Drekk leans over the wheel and stares.
