Chapter 98

Appointment
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, the Clocktower

from below. A tower taller than a mountain, its mile-wide dial gaping where the hour hand is missing. A brass sun arm sweeps past its face with a clunk.

P2MID, the crew

climbing the outside of the tower on the great pendulum chain, a chain as thick as a house that swings slowly back and forth across the dark.

VIGOLASclinging, grinning
Front door was scheduled. We're not.
PAGE 2
P3ACTION.

They swing in through a vent at the top of the pendulum's arc, perfectly timed, Drekk counting, "…three, two, NOW," and tumble onto the floor of the throne room.

P4WIDE, the throne room.

The inside of the great dial: the back of the mile-wide clock-face, its numerals glowing through from outside like stained glass, with gears turning on every wall. In the centre, on a brass throne that ticks, a tall woman sits perfectly upright.

PAGE 3
P5FULL FIGURE. OTUR.

Tall and severe, in a gown of overlapping brass plates that tick softly as she breathes. Her eyes are clock faces: tiny hands sweeping round the irises. Her hair is wound in coiled springs of silver, piled high. One gloved hand rests on the arm of the throne, beside a small closed music box. Her fingertip is touching its lid.

OTUR · DRIFTING-2 · K-IV SHAPED · Scalelist #611 · Empress of Urverket

P6CLOSE, Otur

not surprised. Of course not.

OTUR
You are late.
VIGOLAS
I'm always late.
OTUR
You have always been late. Today you will be on time: for your funeral.
PAGE 4
P7CLOSE, Kompis

eyes gold, looking at the one crooked thread running from her to the music box. He says nothing yet.

P8CLOSE, Otur

her clock-face eyes ticking. She lifts one finger.

OTUR
At twelve and three seconds, the bridge falls.
P9WIDE.

Across the throne room, the brass walkway the crew is standing on, a bridge over a shaft of turning gears, has nothing wrong with it. Rivets tight. Beams sound.

PAGE 5
P10CLOSE, a clock on the wall.

12:00:01… 12:00:02…

P11ACTION.

12:00:03. The bridge falls. Not breaking, just falling, as if gravity had been scheduled to notice it. The crew drops toward the grinding gears below.

P12ACTION.

Rougeina Swaps up to a beam, grabbing Kali. Smurjan catches a chain. Vigolas grabs Drekk and Trollmage by the collars, and the crew claws its way up onto the gear-walls.

PAGE 6
P13CLOSE, Otur

a second finger rising.

OTUR
At twelve and nine, the pirate's left knee.
P14CLOSE, Vigolas

scrambling onto a gear-tooth, hearing it, looking down at his knee.

VIGOLAS
My what—
PAGE 7
P15ACTION.

12:00:09. CRACK. His left knee buckles sideways under him. Nobody touched it. It was appointed. He goes down screaming onto the gear.

P16CLOSE, Kompis

sliding down to him.

KOMPIS
Vig!
VIGOLASthrough his teeth
I'm fine! I'm fine, I've got another one!
PAGES 8–9 — THE CLASH: EVERYTHING ARRIVES FIRST
P17ACTION, a run of fast panels.

The crew attacks, and she's already there:

Smurjan walks the Sightline toward her. "At twelve and fourteen, the three-eyed one blinks." He blinks, the line breaks, and he stumbles.

Rougeina Swaps toward the throne. "At twelve and fifteen, the assassin arrives one step to the left." She arrives one step to the left, into a gear's teeth, and barely tears free.

Kali borrows Smurjan's Wrath. "At twelve and seventeen, the borrower forgets what she borrowed." The crimson in Kali's eyes goes out mid-swing.

Kompis raises Lilla Ulv. Subtick, the world grey, a thousand versions of the shot, and in every version, at twelve and twenty, the pistol jams. Because it was appointed.

P18CLOSE, Kompis

colour snapping back, the pistol jammed, his nose bleeding.

KOMPIS
…I lived it a thousand times. It jams in all of them.
PAGE 10
P19CLOSE, Otur

perfectly still, one finger raised.

OTUR
You fight like people who think the future is open.
OTUR
It isn't. Not here. Here, the future is a list. And I write the list.
P20CLOSE, Mingus

growling up at her from beside Kompis. Otur looks down at the dog, and for one beat the tiny hands in her clock-eyes stutter.

OTUR
…That one isn't on any list.
PAGES 11–12 — SPLASH
P21SPLASH (double page). APPOINTMENT.

Otur stands. Her gown of brass plates ticks louder, tick tick tick, and every clock on every wall of the throne room swings its hands to point at the crew. Around them, in glowing engraved script in the air, appointments write themselves, dozens of them, all at once, each with a time and a victim:

12:01:00 · the troll falls asleep · 12:01:02 · the navigator's mask slips · 12:01:04 · the shadow-mouth chokes · 12:01:06 · the borrower's sickle breaks · 12:01:08 · the assassin's eighth blade is lost · 12:01:10 · the pirate's coat-button

Otur stands at the centre of it like a conductor before an orchestra, one finger raised, clock-eyes spinning. Tiny, almost unseen, her other hand is still resting on the closed music box.

PAGE 13
P22CLOSE, Vigolas

on one knee, reading the appointments.

VIGOLAS
RUN! EVERYBODY RUN! BACK DOWN THE CHAIN!
P23ACTION.

The crew flees, Smurjan carrying Vigolas, Drekk carrying the sleeping Trollmage (12:01:00 · the troll falls asleep, right on time), and leaps back out through the vent onto the swinging pendulum chain.

PAGE 14
P24ACTION.

Behind them, the appointments come due, on the second: the navigator's mask slips (Drekk catches it, one-handed), Kali's sickle cracks, Rougeina's eighth blade slides out of its sheath and tumbles into the gears far below. Each one is small, exact and humiliating.

P25WIDE.

The crew slides down the pendulum chain into the dark, routed.

PAGE 15
P26WIDE, back in the gaps.

The Unwound patch them up: Vigolas's knee in a splint, Kali's cracked sickle bound with wire, Rougeina staring at the empty eighth sheath on her back.

P27CLOSE, Vigolas

flat on his back, knee splinted, staring at the brass ceiling.

VIGOLAS
…You can't stop it. Can you. Anything she says, it just happens. Bridge, knee, blade. And at nine o'clock on day nine, the Marka.
PAGE 16
P28CLOSE, Kompis

quiet.

KOMPIS
She touched the music box. The whole time. Even when she stood up. Like she was holding someone's hand.
P29CLOSE, Gran Fjäder

in the corner.

GRAN FJÄDER
Three hundred years, nobody's heard it play. She's never scheduled it.
PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P30CLOSE, Trollmage

who has been asleep all through the retreat, opening his eyes. Wide. Violet. Very, very awake.

TROLLMAGE
…No. You can't stop it.
P31FINAL PANEL, close on Trollmage

sitting up slowly, a lazy, enormous, dangerous smile spreading under his tusks.

TROLLMAGE
But nobody said you have to let it happen her way.
