Chapter 137
Ingrith walks toward the bed where Trollmage sleeps against Mingus. Old Stav steps into her path and lays the carved king-staff across it like a gate. Six troll guards close in behind him. Kompis has Ivar up.
Stav as she sees him: an enormous troll-shape with no face, just a plate floating where his face should be: K-I · Scalelist #2,846,903.
Ingrith lifts the First Seal over the sleeping heir. A door-sized bronze seal drops out of the air onto the King's Bed and slides off him like water off a duck. Her lenses whir, click, and find nothing.
snapping open a little brass pocket-watch, then glancing at the light shaft high above, where the black is turning grey.
(Ingrith goes. The old woman with bone spectacles stays, her K-IV rod blazing, a dozen K-IV Examiners at her back.)
Summer on a Brygdar mountainside. A very small half-troll naps on a sun-warm ledge of stone. Grandmother Ulla knits beside him.
Under the sleeping child the mountain is lit from inside, violet, deep, a whole underground lake of violet light, layered like years. Every nap of a childhood, banked in the rock. Ulla's knitting needles click on.
The Chief Examiner's K-IV squad hits the guards. Seal-domes freeze two trolls slow, and a rod cracks against the king-staff. Stav, unpowered, holds the gap with his body. Vigolas crashes in through a side passage, smoking with lightning, and takes two Examiners off their feet.
Smurjan limps in behind him, a K-I with one shadow, bleeding from the scalp. He stops, looking up at the light shaft. The grey up there is turning pink.
The violet glow under the moss rises, out of the stone and into the sleeping figure on it, like water drawn up a wick. Mingus lifts his head and licks Trollmage's ear.
opening. Violet, brighter than anyone has ever seen them, blazing like two lamps with the wicks turned all the way up.

sitting up in the King's Bed, very quiet.
ears drooping, the truest thing he has ever said.
Ingrith's army in perfect rows from wall to wall, rods lowered, perfectly still, a white carpet of soldiers waiting to be stamped. Ingrith on her lead tower lifts the First Seal. The first sliver of sun touches the ridge, and on every plate the words (certified · until sunrise) flicker and start to fade.
Smurjan's one shadow on the floor splits into three. Crimson script relights across his skin like a city waking up, and his shadow bursts open:
Trollmage stands up on the King's Bed, a huge slouched figure with a crow on his head and his grandmother's scarf around his neck, and raises one long finger. He writes in the air, and the violet letters burn across the whole hall, each as tall as a troll guard:
MACRO : RISE = BRYGDAR
A small tempo counter, the kind this saga draws when a heartbeat burns: TEMPO 2. Then it rolls, past a thousand, past a million, numbers blurring upward faster than they can be drawn, as every nap of a childhood fires in one heartbeat.
Dawn over the troll nation, and the mountains stand up.
Along every gorge and every fjord-cliff, the stone kings tear free of the rock: colossal trolls of grey granite rising out of the mountainsides where they have slept for centuries, moss and snow and whole pine forests pouring off their shoulders, broken rings of white iron sliding from their throats and falling like bracelets into the valleys. On every slope, in every hall doorway and on every slipway, every living troll in Brygdar stands up at the same instant, thousands of them, as if the whole nation had been pulled upright by one string.
And in the Pass, the ground Ingrith measured stands up under her army. The gorge floor heaves into the shape of an enormous stone shoulder, and the perfect white rows go tumbling down the Pass like pebbles off a lifted rug, seal-towers toppling and bronze bells bouncing and ringing down the rocks.
Very small, in a high window of the mountain, a half-troll in slippers stands with one finger raised.
on her tower as it tips, the First Seal swinging out over empty air. She brings it down anyway, and the bronze stamp lands on nothing. The still, neat rows she measured aren't standing there any more. Nothing in the Pass is holding still.
Ingrith leaps from the falling tower and lands hard among her tumbling soldiers. Below, the army is routed: Examiners running, rods dropped, plates fading back to K-II as the sun climbs. The Chief Examiner's squad flees the King's Hall at a run.
The stone kings stand in a ring around Brygdar like a wall built by giants, silent, looking down at their valley. One of them, the oldest, with a beard of hanging pines, turns its great head toward the high window and slowly lowers its chin. A bow.
Smurjan, three shadows strong again, script blazing. Bakasura's maw yawns out of the floor behind him.
The numbers roll down as fast as they rolled up: a million, a thousand… TEMPO 2.
Trollmage sways on the King's Bed. His knees fold. He is asleep before he lands, and Stav catches the whole huge, limp, snoring heir in his arms like a sack of flour.
cobwebbed, three hundred years of dust. Inside sits a crown: a heavy band of dark troll-iron, plain and thick, a little bent. Stav lifts it out and sets it on the sleeping heir's head. It goes on crooked.
Every troll in the hall kneels again, and this time the crew does too: Kompis with a hand on Mingus, Rougeina on her carved perch with her head bowed, Smurjan, three shadows bowing with him.
looking at Trollmage, then down through the bed into the stone. The violet lake under the mountain is empty: dark rock with not one glimmer left in it.
looking at the snoring figure with the crooked crown.
Dust, scattered rods, a toppled seal-tower on its side. Ingrith sits on a rock in the wreckage, her spectacles cracked across one lens, calmly winding her measuring tape back onto its spool. A grey little clerk approaches, carrying a long brass tube full of wood.

holding out the tube. Inside it, a core of grey bark marked with fine rings.
in the King's Hall, the sleeping king still in his arms. Suddenly he goes grey, as if something had cut him somewhere far away.
In the morning light, every standing stone king turns its head, slowly and all together, to the south, toward the violet glow of Codexia on the horizon.
