Chapter 380

The Match Is Called
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, dawn, the Arena.

The sun coming up over the curve of the world tree's trunk, light pouring into the amphitheatre from the east, gold down the near stands, gold along the great loop of rope on the floor below them, gold across the bare bark beyond it. And reaching, last of all, the far stands: a thousand rows of bark seats, curving up and away. Full. Or half full.

P2CLOSE, the far stands in the dawn light.

People. Sitting very still, in rows, hands in laps. Drawn in full detail but without colour: every face, every coat, every braid in shades of grey, like a photograph left in the sun. Nobody saw them arrive. They're simply there, the way the dead are always already there.

(No balloon.)

PAGE 2
P3CLOSE, the near stands.

The allies waking on the benches, sitting up, looking across the floor. A Brygdar troll with his mouth open. A Tidekant fishwife standing up slowly, her hand going to her chest.

FISHWIFEbarely a voice
…Haldor?
P4CLOSE, the far stands, one grey face among thousands

an old fisherman, sou'wester in his lap, lifting one hand off his knee toward her. Not a wave. Just a hand.

(No balloon. The dead don't speak across the floor.)

PAGE 3
P5WIDE, across the floor, the living and the dead looking at each other.

All down the near stands, people standing up, one after another, finding faces. A troll pressing both fists to his chest. A lamp-bearer child pointing. Kvar, the old soldier, standing very straight, staring at a block of grey men in old birch-bark armour in the far stands' middle rows: a sergeant, a big man, a boy of sixteen with a drum.

KVARa whisper
…Sergeant.

(In the far stands, Sergeant Holt, grey, unsmiling, touches two fingers to his brow.)

P6CLOSE, the far stands, the lower half.

And here the rows are empty. Row after row after row of bark seats, bare, no one in them, from the floor halfway up, and across half the curve. Not dark. Not broken. Just blank, like the second half of a page nobody finished writing.

PAGE 4
P7CLOSE, Daniel

on a near bench, staring at the empty rows.

DANIELquietly
…The far shore. · · · Everyone the grey took there, they've got no seat.
P8CLOSE, Rougeina

at the rim, her eyes going row by row across the blank half of the far stands, very fast, the way you'd search a crowd for a face. Then slower. Then stopping.

(Her lips moving: eight names. She knew. She looked anyway.)

PAGE 5
P9CLOSE, Rougeina

turning away from the far stands. Her crimson hair across her face. Her hand on her blade's hilt, holding it, not drawing it.

ROUGEINAvery low
…They'd have sat at the back. · · · They always sat at the back.
P10CLOSE, Kompis

beside her, eyes gold, saying the eight names with her, under his breath. Then taking her hand. She lets him.

(No balloon. Two pairs of lips. Eight names.)

PAGE 6
P11CLOSE, Vigolas

at the rim, looking across at the full rows. Finding, high up and toward the middle, thirty-one grey sailors sitting together in two rows, a captain with a grey beard at the end, and on the aisle, a skinny ship's boy of fourteen, waving both arms.

VIGOLASbarely audible
…Tobbe.

(He lifts two fingers to his brow. Thirty-one hands lift two fingers back.)

P12CLOSE, Vigolas

his eyes moving along the row past the Gråtrut's crew. And stopping. Lower down. A different block. A dozen sailors in old black-sail coats, sitting together, wet, their hair grey with more than the dawn. His first crew. The ones he drowned for the gold. And among them, a gangly gap-toothed boy. Ture. And at the end of their row, a broad, weathered woman with two grey braids, a gap tooth and a scar through one eyebrow, a face like a walnut that used to laugh, sitting with her arms folded, looking straight at him: Hild, who stood at the wheel of the Camilla.

PAGE 7
P13CLOSE, Vigolas

the colour going out of his face. His hand dropping from his brow. Not breathing.

VIGOLASa breath
…Hild.
P14CLOSE, Hild

grey, across the floor, arms folded. Her face unreadable. Not a nod. Not a turn away. Just looking at him, the long level look of a captain at a deck-hand, the way she must have looked at him when he was fifteen.

(No balloon.)

PAGE 8
P15CLOSE, Vigolas

a long beat, then not looking away. Holding her eyes across the floor. His fist closing on the knot-mark at his brow.

VIGOLASto himself
…Nobody gets left on the wrong side of the rail. · · · I left all of you there. · · I know. I know what I did.
P16CLOSE, Kompis

letting go of Rougeina's hand and putting it on his brother's back. Seeing the thread from Vigolas to that row of drowned sailors: thin, black, very old, and still there.

KOMPISsoftly
…They came to watch. · · That's all. · · · For now.
PAGE 9
P17CLOSE, Smurjan

a hand on his chest, scanning the far stands, his face tight. Looking for one face, everywhere, a broad laughing woman, and not finding her. And then breathing out, slowly, almost smiling.

SMURJAN
…She's not there. · · · Good. · · She's here. (His hand on his chest.)
P18CLOSE, the far stands, middle rows.

A huge grey man standing among the seated dead, the only one of them standing, broad as a wall, arms folded: Aldhrun, last Keeper of the Bastion, looking down at the floor as if he could still hold a line across it.

TROLLMAGEquietly, beside Smurjan
…Mm. · · He's still standing.
PAGE 10
P19CLOSE, Kompis

the last of the five to look. His eyes moving across the far stands for a small figure. A boy of five. Not finding him. And his hand going, without his thinking about it, to the gun at his hip. Bror. And inside it, the faint warm hum of a little brother who never went to any shore.

KOMPISto the gun, very quietly
…You're with me.

(The gun is warm under his palm.)

P20CLOSE, Mingus

at Kompis's heel, looking across at the far stands, his nose working. Ears up. Tail slow. Interested, the way he'd be interested in a crowd on a quay. Not afraid. Then looking up at his boy, and waiting.

PAGE 11
P21WIDE, the rim.

Roffe at Mätt, ladling breakfast, steam rising into the dawn, the allies filing past him into the near stands with bowls. The five standing at the head of the steps that go down through the near stands to the floor.

ROFFEhanding each of the five a bowl, one after another, gravely
…Nobody fights hungry. · · · That's the rule.
P22CLOSE, Vigolas

eating fast, watching the far stands over the rim of the bowl. Trollmage eating slowly. Rougeina not eating, then eating because Roffe is watching her. Smurjan's shadow eating half of his. Kompis giving a bit to Mingus.

VIGOLASmouth full
…Good.
ROFFE
…I know.
PAGE 12
P23CLOSE, the Up-Again crew

in the front row of the near stands, at the foot of the steps, just above the Ring's gold line: Flexsnus in his lean with his tin, Daniel with his docket, Perne with Fjärran, Tihi on the bench-back, Jeppson with his steady hands, Roffe coming down to join them. And Krydog, standing, one boot inside the ring.

TIHIas the five come down the steps
…Captain Vigolas! · · If you fall down—
VIGOLAS
…I know. · · Get up.
TIHIgrinning
…Upp igen.
P24CLOSE, Jeppson

as the five pass, pressing something into Vigolas's hand: a stub of chalk.

JEPPSON
…In case you need a door. · · · It won't rise for you. · · But you'll know where one should go.
PAGE 13
P25CLOSE, Flexsnus

as Kompis passes, sliding a slip of paper into his hood. Kompis pulling it out: a neat merchant's script, a ruled line.

FOR SERVICES: ONE (1) NOTCH, ANY RULE, WHEN NEEDED. AMOUNT DUE: COME BACK.

KOMPIS
…Flex—
FLEXSNUSnot looking at him
…Don't sign anything.
P26CLOSE, Daniel

standing as Rougeina passes. Formal. A small bow.

DANIEL
…For the record. · · · I'll be watching the rules.
ROUGEINA
…Somebody should.
PAGE 14
P27CLOSE, the gold line

at the foot of the near stands. Emma kneeling at the Ring's knot just inside it, her staff planted, the silver all through her braid catching the dawn. Looking up at the five as they reach the line.

EMMA
…Nobody can make you end in here. · · · Remember that. · · Whatever it shows you. · · · Come back in when you need to.
P28CLOSE, Krydog

at the line, standing, one boot in, the other out. He doesn't say anything. He puts out a bandaged fist. And one after another, all five bump it as they pass.

tk. tk. tk. tk. tk.

(Mingus sniffs the fist. Krydog laughs.)

PAGES 15–16 — SPLASH
P29SPLASH (double page). THE ARENA.

The Arena in the side of the world tree, from high above the floor, full morning, open to the sky. On the left, the stands of the living: one curve of bark seats packed with every ally in the world, trolls and fishwives and lamp-bearers and ex-Everlasting and plateless refugees, Iskall's lamp held up, Aska and Ivo, Svala perched on a rail, Njord and Sill in the top row, Isa a beat late to stand, the Up-Again crew in the front row, a cook with a cauldron, a captain with one boot in a ring. On the right, facing them across the floor, the stands of the dead: a thousand rows, grey, silent, every face turned to the floor, and half the rows empty, a great blank curve of bare seats like an unfinished page.

Between them, the bare bark floor, ridged, grey-gold in the sun, wide as a harbour. On its near side, under the stands of the living, the gold loop of the Great Ring, a thousand and four ropes knotted end to end, a silver-streaked woman kneeling at its knot. And walking out across the Ring and past its far edge onto the open floor, toward the centre, the five: a pirate in a long coat with a chalk stub in his fist, a boy in a hood with a gun at his hip, a woman with crimson hair and a blade, a quiet man with a shadow that moves on its own, a troll-mage with a crow on his head. And at the boy's heel, a golden dog, stepping onto the bark of the Arena as if it were any morning on any beach.

(No balloon. No sound.)

PAGE 17
P30CLOSE, the five's boots

on the bare bark floor, walking toward its centre. And Mingus's paws. And behind them, all round the floor, the bark rising: a ridge of Ferdinand's own bark lifting along the foot of both stands, smooth, waist-high, sealing the floor off from the stands without a sound, the Ring and the woman at its knot inside the seal with the five. Krydog's boot, which was over the gold line, pushed gently back up onto the step by the rising bark. He lets it. At the rim, the top of the Bridge of Every Ship cut off from the Arena by a single black line drawn across the bark.

P31CLOSE, the far stands and the near stands at once

split panel: on one side the living leaning forward, on the other the dead, not moving. Both watching the floor.

PAGE 18 — THE HOOK
P32WIDE, the floor.

The five at its centre, small in the middle of all that bare bark, back to back without having decided to, looking out at the two curves of faces. Mingus sitting down at Kompis's feet.

P33FINAL PANEL.

Across the whole bare floor of the Arena, from rim to rim, under the five's feet and round them, black, square, enormous, the letters writing themselves into the bark, one word at a time:

THE MATCH IS CALLED.

NO ONE ENTERS.

NO ONE LEAVES.
