Chapter 412

Nothing Gets Past
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, night, the raft-city.

Grey shapes climbing out of the black sea onto a thousand lashed hulls, headfirst and palms first, the way they once climbed down the bark: like lizards, smooth, faceless, slow. Lanterns swinging. Ship's bells ringing alarm from deck to deck across the whole fleet.

DONG-DONG-DONG — dang-dang — DONNNG
P2CLOSE, Kompis

at the Marka's rail beside the berth, eyes going gold, looking at the nearest climbing hunter. And seeing nothing on it. No threads. Not one. A grey shape tied to nothing in the world.

KOMPIS
…No threads. · · Same as before. · · · But before, they had somewhere to be.
DANIELbeside him, his plain sword drawn left-handed
…They were the Arbiter's. · · The Arbiter is a balloon.
ROUGEINAon the berth roof
…So nobody's calling them off.
PAGE 2
P3CLOSE, Emma

by the wheel, leaning on her ringed staff, watching the hunters' faceless heads all turn the same way as they reach each deck. Following their turn with her eyes. To the little bone-white cabin. To the snoring coming out of its door.

EMMAthe colour going out of her face
…They go for whatever's most unfinished. · · · And he's paying four thousand nights.
P4CLOSE, Emma

turning to the others, her voice level the way it goes level when it's bad.

EMMA
…If one of them lays a palm on him, it finishes the sleep. · · All of it. · · · Every night he owes, landing in one beat.
JEPPSONhands shaking
…His heart holds one borrowed beat. · · That's all it's ever held.
EMMA
…I know. · · · That's the overflow.

(Nobody says anything. Inside the berth, Krydog snores.)

PAGE 3
P5CLOSE, Vigolas

standing up off Drekk's bucket in the doorway. Looking down at his own boots on the chalk threshold. The ∞−1 in his eyes beginning to blink gold.

VIGOLAS
…Right.
P6CLOSE, Vigolas's chest

one heartbeat, the Minus One drawn the way it's always drawn: a single beat in which he could do every possible thing but one, and has to name the one.

VIGOLASquietly
…I give up leaving this door.
ba— — (his heart stopping for one beat, the price, then coming back) —DUM.

(A faint emerald ring glows round his heels on the chalk threshold, and stays.)

PAGE 4
P7CLOSE, Kompis

staring at the ring round his boots.

KOMPIS
…Vigo. · · That's for the whole fight. · · · Last time you gave up standing still, you shuffled for two days.
VIGOLAS
…And yesterday I got it back. · · So I'm giving up the other thing. · · · It's one fight. It ends when he wakes up.
KOMPIS
…You can't take it back.
VIGOLASsitting back down on the bucket, grinning
…Didn't want to.
P8CLOSE, Rougeina

on the roof, drawing two of her eight blades and then, very deliberately, sheathing them again. Looking down at the deck and calling the rule the way a bosun calls a sail.

ROUGEINA
…Nobody starts anything! · · No punches! No bites! No shots! · · · Swap them. Hold them. Throw what's finished.
PAGES 5–6 — SPLASH
P9SPLASH (double page). THE FIRST NIGHT.

The Marka's deck in swinging lamplight, a little chalk cabin at its heart with a lit port and an open door, and grey hunters coming over the rails on every side. And everyone fighting by the rules: Rougeina blinking from roof to rail to masthead, a silver-rose afterimage left at every point, Swapping hunters one per beat with empty air above the sea so they drop, finished by nothing, into the water; Isa, her hand pressed to the frost-scar on her chest, holding a whole cluster of them frozen on the starboard rail while trolls from the next ship pry them off with oars like barnacles; Svala from the mainmast in one white streak, the first thing in her path a grey arm; Bakasura rising out of Smurjan's shadow and closing his vast jaws on a hunter, and the bite finishing, harmless, the hunter still standing; Roffe holding his cauldron Mätt up like a wall, grey palms sliding off iron that was finished the day it was cast; Tihi pelting juggling balls; Drekk at the wheel doing nothing but holding it, because steering is in progress and he daren't. And in the doorway of the cabin, Vigolas, on his bucket, emptying his coat.

BAKASURAchewing nothing
…Didn't eat.
PAGE 7
P10ACTION, a run of small panels: the coat.

Vigolas throwing everything he ever kept that's already finished, left hand, right hand, at grey faces coming over the rail:

a fistful of bottle caps, PING PING PING, knocking a hunter back over the side;

iron nails from Flisa's ring, THK-THK;

a brass button; a cabin biscuit ("That's been FINISHED since the OVEN!");

a very old fish, "not fresh", SPLUT.

VIGOLAS
…THIS is why I keep everything!
P11CLOSE, Tihi

behind Roffe's cauldron, winding up a juggling ball like a pitcher, Daniel standing over her with his sword held still and flat as a gate.

TIHI
…They're finished balls! · · I finished learning them when I was six!
BONK.
DANIEL
…Noted.
PAGE 8
P12CLOSE, inside the berth

through the doorway past Vigolas's shoulder: the hammock sagging to the planks, the captain snoring in it, and Mingus, on the captain's chest, his head up now, ears forward, staring at the door. Not moving off. A low growl in his chest.

grrrrrrrrr…
P13CLOSE, Trollmage

asleep on his coil of rope on the berth floor, and his crow, wide awake on his stomach, screaming warnings at the doorway.

CROW
…KRAAAK! KRAAK! KRAAAAK!
TROLLMAGEnot waking
…Mm. · · …five more minutes…
PAGE 9
P14ACTION.

One hunter getting through: over the rail behind Roffe, along the deck, under Rougeina's blink, straight at the berth door. Vigolas's coat empty: pockets turned out, nothing left to throw. He grabs its wrist: his grip a thing in progress. And the grip finishing, gently, uselessly, his hand falling away. The hunter's other palm coming up, flat, and laying itself on his shoulder.

P15CLOSE, Vigolas's face

and over his head, faint grey letters, like breath on a window:

DONE

His eyes going quiet. The grin going out. A strange, peaceful emptiness settling on him, the face of a man who has worked enough.

VIGOLASmildly
…Oh. · · · …I've done enough.
PAGE 10
P16ACTION.

Vigolas standing up off the bucket, calm, turning to go: away from the door, away from the berth, the way a man walks away from a job that's over. And his boots not moving. The emerald ring round his heels flaring. He looks down at his feet, puzzled.

VIGOLASvaguely
…Hm. · · · Why can't I leave?
P17CLOSE, Kompis

across the deck, eyes gold, seeing the thread from his brother to the sleeping captain going slack, grey, finished, like a fishing line with nothing on it.

KOMPIS
…ISKALL!
PAGE 11
P18CLOSE, the berth's port.

Iskall, seven years old with knee-length braids, lifting her clay lamp in both hands and turning its white flame through the window onto Vigolas's face. One emerald freckle on her cheek lighting as she does it: a day of her growing up, spent.

ISKALL
…Look.
P19INSET, soft-edged, warm: THE LOOK.

His joy, the one it showed him on Lumen. Not gold. The Marka's deck at night, the whole crew asleep round the fire in heaps (a dog, a troll-mage under his hat, a quiet man, a woman with a blade across her knees, a hooded boy), and himself awake on the rail, watching over them.

PAGE 12
P20CLOSE, Vigolas

the grey letters over his head breaking up like frost. The grin coming back. His eyes filling.

VIGOLAS
…Oh. · · Right. · · · Them.
P21ACTION.

Vigolas grabbing the nearest finished thing in reach, Drekk's upturned bucket, and swinging it two-handed into the hunter's smooth grey face. The hunter going backwards over the rail and into the sea. Vigolas dropping straight back down on the bucket in the doorway.

BONK. …splash.
VIGOLAS
…Thanks for the bucket, Drekk!
DREKKfrom the wheel
…THAT'S MY BUCKET!
PAGE 13
P22CLOSE, Kompis

coming to the door, wiping a nosebleed, looking at the emerald ring round his brother's boots. Understanding.

KOMPIS
…That's why you gave it up. · · Leaving. · · · You knew they could finish your reason. · · So you made sure your feet couldn't go.
VIGOLAS
…Did I? · · Ha! Clever me.
ROUGEINAdropping onto the deck beside them
…You didn't know.
VIGOLASa beat
…No. · · · But I would have.
P23WIDE, the Marka's deck, the last hour of the night.

The last hunters going over the rails, Swapped, held, bonked, shoved. Grey heads sinking into the black water. The crews standing in the wreck of their own finished things (caps, nails, juggling balls, a fish) breathing hard. The bells across the raft-city going quiet one by one.

PAGE 14
P24CLOSE, Isa

sitting down hard against the mainmast, both hands over the white frost-scar on her chest, a race of heartbeats running across the panel.

ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum
EMMAkneeling to her
…Short holds. · · That heart's scarred, Isa. · · · Short ones.
ISAa beat late
…They were short.
P25CLOSE, Mingus

in the berth, laying his head back down on the captain's chest. Sighing through his nose. Tail thumping once against the hammock.

KRYDOGasleep
…khhhrrrRRRR…
PAGE 15
P26WIDE, dawn.

The sun coming up over the curve of the sea, gold on the raft-city, gold on the grey bark of the world tree going up into the sky. And on the Marka's deck, a little bone-white cabin, a sleeping man inside it, and a pirate on a dented bucket in its door, bottle caps all round his boots.

P27CLOSE, Jeppson

at the berth's outer wall, his hands still shaking from yesterday's day of steady hands. He chalks his old sum out of habit, 4,106, and crosses it out, because nobody has the number any more. Under it he draws one tally-stroke. Badly. Wobbling. The way Drekk scratched four months into the Marka's rail.

|

JEPPSONlooking at his own wobbly line
…Hm. · · Ugly. · · · One night paid. · · Don't ask me how many to go.
PAGE 16
P28CLOSE, Vigolas

in the door, eyes red-rimmed, grinning, toasting the sunrise with Kompis's cold tea.

VIGOLAS
…One.
KOMPISsitting down beside the bucket with his back to the cabin wall
…And how many more?
VIGOLAS
…Ha! · · · As many as it takes.
P29CLOSE, Smurjan

at the Marka's rail, looking down into the water where the hunters sank. His third eye opening, crimson-rimmed, the world going to grey diagram lines in it: the hull, the roots under the sea, the sea floor beneath them. And something on it.

SMURJANquietly
…They're not gone.
PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P30CLOSE, Smurjan

his third eye fixed downward, his voice flat as the sea.

SMURJAN
…They're walking. · · On the bottom. · · · From every direction.
VIGOLASfrom the door
…How many?
SMURJAN
…We'd have to count the sea, captain.
P31FINAL PANEL, below the water, wide

drawn in Smurjan's grey diagram lines: the roots of the world tree going down into the dark like the legs of a mountain, and across the sea floor toward them, from every horizon at once, grey figures walking, in long patient lines, palms out, faceless, hundreds upon hundreds, all coming the same way.

(No balloon.)
