PAGE 1
P1WIDE, dusk on Fyren.
The black rock, the white lighthouse, the Beam sweeping out again, steady and whole, ten thousand silver threads across the sea behind it. On the flat rock below the tower, a Long Table made of Upp Igen planks and Marka barrels, and both crews round it.
P2CLOSE, Roffe
at the head of the table with the cauldron Mätt steaming, ladling stew into bowls and passing them down the line.
ROFFE
…Wreckers' rations, Fyren's fish, Värn barley. · Eat. · Everyone eats.
BAKASURAfrom the shadow, faintly, mouth full
…Good.
ROFFEbeaming
…Good, he says! · Give him more!
PAGE 2
P3CLOSE, Roffe's own bowl
empty in front of him. He hasn't touched any. He never does. Kompis noticing, frowning, pushing his own bowl across.
KOMPIS
…You're not eating.
ROFFEcheerfully, pushing it back
…My cooking doesn't feed me, lad. · Never has. · I eat by watching you eat.
P4CLOSE, Kompis
staring at the huge man, something nagging at him. A kitchen. Steam. Being eight.
KOMPIS
…Have I met you before?
ROFFEvery gently
…I was a kitchen boy, once. · In a place under a mountain. · There was a little lad in a big hoodie who wouldn't eat for a week. · I put an extra potato on his plate every night till he did.
PAGE 3
P5CLOSE, Kompis
frozen. Then laughing, choked, wiping his eyes.
KOMPIS
…The potato. · There was always one extra. · I thought it was a mistake.
P6CLOSE, Mingus
under the table, head on Roffe's boot, being slipped fish by an enormous hand.
PAGE 4
P7WIDE, the foot of the lighthouse.
Hallbard standing at the tower door, one enormous hand on the frame, his white eyes turned out to sea. He doesn't come to the table.
HALLBARDcalling, a foghorn, gentle
…Eat without me, sons. · I'm learning the dark.
P8CLOSE, Hallbard's white eyes
and in them, as the Beam sweeps past far out at sea, one flash of silver: a little fishing boat a hundred leagues off, lit, seen for one instant. Then nothing again.
HALLBARDto himself
…There's one. · Red sail. Two nets. · Going home to a woman who sings.
PAGES 5–6 — SPLASH
P9SPLASH (double page). WHAT THE BEAM TOUCHES.
The whole Current at night, seen the way Hallbard sees it now: all black, totally, except, wherever the Beam is sweeping, a brilliant silver wedge of the world: a fishing boat, a whale's back, a cliff with a goat on it, a child on a raft waving, all of it sharp and clear and silver for one instant as the blade of light passes, and then gone to black again behind it.
In the centre, the old giant at his tower door, white-eyed, smiling faintly, seeing only what his light touches: and seeing it better than he ever has.
PAGE 7
P10CLOSE, Drekk
coming up to the tower door with a bowl of stew, pushing it into Hallbard's hands.
DREKK
…You'll eat this, you stubborn old lamp.
HALLBARD
…Stubborn, says the man who wore a bell-rope over his face for most of a year.
P11CLOSE, Hallbard
reaching inside his oilskin and pulling out a thick logbook, salt-stained, four hundred years of ships in it. Pushing it into Drekk's hands in exchange for the bowl.
HALLBARD
…The Keeper's Log. · Copy it. · Every ship I've lit. Every course. · You're the only one who can read the Beam without it burning your eyes out, sailor. · Somebody should know the way.
PAGE 8
P12CLOSE, Drekk
holding the log like something holy.
DREKK
…I'll copy it. · Every word. · (Gruffly) And I'll bring it back.
HALLBARD
…You'd better. · Grumpy old sailors are hard to find.
P13CLOSE, Ysel
beside Drekk, looking up at the lighthouse, quietly.
YSEL
…He can't see it any more. · The lamp. · What if it goes out and he doesn't know?
PAGE 9
P14WIDE.
At the very end of the Long Table, alone, wrapped in a borrowed blanket, a bowl of untouched stew in front of her: Natta. Thin, dark-eyed, lightless, emptied. Nobody quite knows what to do with her. Emma sitting beside her. Tihi on her other side, chattering.
TIHI
…and then he hit him with a fish—
P15CLOSE, Natta
her head turning slowly toward the tower, sniffing the air.
NATTAsoftly
…The big one's burning steady. · Sixty-one turns a night. · There's a draught on the north side of the glass. · It'll gutter in a storm.
PAGE 10
P16CLOSE, Hallbard
at the tower door, his white eyes turning toward the sound of her voice.
HALLBARD
…You can smell that?
NATTAvery small
…I can smell every light. · I just can't see any. · I can tell you if it ever goes out. · Before you'd know.
P17CLOSE, Hallbard
a long, long silence. Then, gruffly:
HALLBARD
…I need someone on nights.
PAGE 11
P18CLOSE, Natta
staring toward him with her lightless eyes.
HALLBARD
…And then you gave it all back. · All over the sky. · That's more than most Wreckers ever do.
HALLBARD
…Neither can I, girl. · Not any more. · We'll make a fine pair. · One of us sees what it touches. · The other smells if it's there.
P19CLOSE, Emma
beside Natta, very quietly.
EMMA
…You'd be keeping the lamp that saves ships. · Not the ones that sink them.
NATTAa long beat, then a whisper
…Okay.
PAGE 12
P20CLOSE, Daniel
further along the table, setting down his spoon, turning to Rougeina, who is sitting with her soot-black blades across her knees, not cleaning them yet.
DANIEL
…You said "was". · The executioner. · Was.
P21CLOSE, Rougeina
wary.
ROUGEINA
…My list's done. · Every name crossed. · One unwritten before I got there.
DANIEL
…And the ones you crossed. · Nobody remembers them but you.
ROUGEINAcold
…And Kompis. And Kvar. · What's it to you?
PAGE 13
P22CLOSE, Daniel
calm, honest.
DANIEL
…I'm not appealing you. · I don't appeal verdicts people chose. · But I've read the record of your first. · A warden-sergeant. Torvik. · With a child's drawing of a horse.
ROUGEINAgoing very still
…How do you know about the horse?
DANIEL
…I was a clerk. I read everything.
P23CLOSE, Daniel.
DANIEL
…Some day I'd like to ask if he deserved to be forgotten. · Not killed. · Forgotten. · That's a different verdict. · Think about it.
(Rougeina doesn't answer. But she doesn't leave the table either.)
PAGE 14
P24WIDE, night.
The table emptying. Krydog asleep sitting up at the end of it, raw-eyed, the first sleep he's had in twenty rises, snoring. Vigolas draping a blanket over him.
VIGOLASwhispering to Emma
…How long will he sleep?
EMMAwhispering back
…Twenty nights' worth. · About an hour. · He's stubborn.
P25CLOSE, Krydog
asleep, mumbling.
PAGE 15
P26WIDE, the lantern room, midnight.
Hallbard at the lens, white-eyed, wiping it out of habit. And at the top of the stair, wrapped in her blanket, sitting with her back to the wall, her face turned toward the lamp she can't see: Natta. The night-keeper.
NATTAsoftly
…Still burning.
P27CLOSE, Hallbard
talking across the water, to the dark, to someone.
HALLBARD
…I've got an apprentice, Mörda.
MÖRDAfar off, smoky
…I heard. · She's lucky.
PAGE 16 — THE HOOK
P28WIDE, dawn.
The Beam sweeping out over the sea, and on the horizon, lit silver for one instant as it passes, a line of sails: a dozen ships, rigged for chasing, every one flying a crude flag with a chair painted on it.
P29FINAL PANEL, close on Hallbard
at the glass, his white eyes catching that silver flash of a dozen sails, his face going grim.
HALLBARD
…Chair-hunters. · A dozen of them. · (Quietly) And I'll have to light them too.
