Chapter 362
The Great Chain lying across the glowing road in the Gate like a dropped belt. On every Order sail from horizon to horizon, the square black letters: THE FIVE MAY PASS. THE REST GO HOME. And a mile back, a thousand allied ships, silent, every deck turned toward the same two.
without meaning to be, standing apart on the Marka's deck: Vigolas at the bow with his hands on his hips. Kompis with Mingus against his leg. Rougeina on the rail, barefoot, eight hilts in an X. Smurjan with Kali rising out of his shadow, one-armed, the black-glass sickle on her shoulder. And Trollmage, flat on his back in a chalk ring by the mast, his crow pecking his nose.
quietly, looking down the road at the lowered chain.
not looking at the Gate. Looking back over her shoulder at the fleet: lamp-boats, troll longships, plateless rafts, a black barge.
climbing onto the Marka's bowsprit, cupping his hands round his mouth, and roaring a mile down the road at the four flagships.
The windlasses turning. The Great Chain rising off the road, link by link, back up into the air. And on every Order sail, the old letters sliding away, and two new words writing themselves, smaller, colder:
THEN NONE.
Boats rowing in from every part of the fleet and lashing themselves alongside her and alongside each other, until the Upp Igen sits in the middle of a raft of hulls, her deck crowded with captains: the first council of the whole Gathering.
A troll jarl, grey and mossy, a stone axe as big as a door on his shoulder, a stone king carved on his longship's prow.
Njord in Young Pike alongside, Sill at his elbow, ready to sign.
Iskall in her lamp-boat, standing, and Gammel-Ljus, a hundred and four, holding the oars.
Aska on her stump on the black barge, smoke for hair; Ivo beside her with a ladle.
The plateless net-maker, old, a cord of knots in her fingers, on a raft with washing on it.
A Gate City skipper with a broken nose and a salt-stiff coat.
A Splinterlands sailor under a fox-red sail, a root fox asleep round her neck.
Flyttfågeln's whistle-girl, ten, dropping out of the sky on a glider-cloak and landing on the Upp Igen's rail with a bone whistle round her neck.
Torva, sitting on a coil of rope, the great bark horn across her back bound tight with Jeppson's lashing.
balloons stacked on balloons:
at the edge of the crowd by the scarred fist, arms folded. Saying nothing. Daniel beside him in his clean grey coat, watching the argument like a judge watching a bad trial.
in Young Pike, lifting one huge hand, and the deck going quiet round him, the way a harbour goes quiet when the oldest fisherman stands up. He looks straight at Vigolas.
every face turning to Vigolas. The troll jarl lifting his axe.
a long beat. The grin nowhere. He looks up the trunk at the Arena, small and high and bare. Then back at them.
quiet, the whole deck straining to hear.
Every head on the council turning, slowly, the same way. Toward the scarred fist. Toward a big man in a patchwork coat, whose face is doing something it has never done in front of a crowd: going pale.
and in a small inset beside his head, faded like an old memory: a Kneeling Quay in a sea-cave, rows of kneeling candidates, a nineteen-year-old in the middle of them on his feet, bleeding, and a bronze seal coming down on a file: UNPLACEABLE: NOT FOR SERVICE.
All four flagships blooming with white smoke at once, broadside after broadside, the sound arriving a heartbeat after the light, and fifty iron balls arcing up out of the smoke toward the crowded council of boats.
A plateless raft splintering, washing and people flung into the sea, the old net-maker among them. A troll longship's oars snapping like kindling. A ball striking Eken, THONK, another ring. And a ball smashing through the Upp Igen's rail beside the scarred fist, and the splinters and the blast throwing Krydog off the bow, coat flaring, out over the water, and down, flat on his back, onto the glowing road ahead of the ship.
Krydog flat on the silver light, eyes open, blood in his teeth, and two heartbeats drawn as a doubled silver pulse across the panel, silver light leaking through his bandages.
And Krydog rising: one arc, flat to standing, no hands, the coat flaring out behind him, the gash on his scalp closing in silver stitch-light. Standing on the road of light, on the sea, a mile in front of the Order's guns, in front of a thousand ships, the broadside smoke still drifting over his head.
Krydog walking along the road, the light rippling under his boots, to where the old net-maker is going under in the black water beside it. Crouching. Reaching down. A bandaged hand closing on her wrist and hauling, and her coming up out of the sea onto the road, gasping, onto her knees, then onto her feet, because he doesn't let go until she's on them.
A troll floundering beside the shattered longship, too heavy to swim, going down. Krydog lying flat on the edge of the road, getting both arms under a stone shoulder and heaving, and the troll coming up out of the sea, streaming, and standing on the road beside an old woman and a man in a patchwork coat.
stepping up onto the Upp Igen's broken rail, his grey coat spattered, his face calm. Not raising his palm. Just his voice.
before he can finish:
Njord lifting his tide-rod over Young Pike, already. "Aye."
Sill with both hands up.
Iskall, her clay lamp held high.
Aska, a burning hand lifted, her coal eyes on Krydog.
The troll jarl, bringing his stone axe down on his shield: KRANG.
The net-maker, soaked, on the road, one hand up, the other still in Krydog's.
The sea at Ferdinand's foot under drifting gunsmoke, and across the whole allied fleet, from the Upp Igen outward like a fire catching through dry grass: lanterns running up to every masthead, one after another after another, a thousand lights climbing a thousand masts in broad day. Troll longships hammering axes on shields. Tidekant fishers holding up their nets. Lamp-boats lifting their lamps. The plateless rafts waving their washing. Overhead, Flyttfågeln's ten thousand birds wheeling in one vast slow spiral, the whistle-girl's note cracking through it. And on the Upp Igen's mainmast, the bandaged fist on black, run up to the top.
And in the middle of it all, standing on a road of light on the sea, below the bow of a battered ship, an old woman on one side of him and a dripping troll on the other: a big man in a patchwork coat, bloody-toothed, staring up at a thousand lamps as if nobody has ever voted for him for anything in his life. Because nobody has.
wiping his mouth with a bandaged fist. The fleet going quiet to hear him.
squinting down at him.
The fleet's lanterns still at every masthead. The Upp Igen's bow, the scarred fist pale in the dark. Krydog sitting on the bowsprit, unwinding the bandage on his right hand and winding it again, higher, to the elbow, over a thin silver sentence crawling up his forearm that no one has ever read. Beside him, Rougeina, crouched on the rail, one of her eight thin blades drawn and held out flat toward him, its mirror-bright face turned his way.
turning his head away a heartbeat before the steel's face can catch him. Not angry. Very tired.
Far down the wall of chained hulls, away from the Gate, where two old Sentinel hulls ride high and their chain sags low between them: a small grey boat shooting out under the sagging chain, a single sail cracking full, and behind her an Order pinnace giving chase, and all along the line the flash of guns turning on her.
plumes of spray from near-misses on either side, and at the tiller a ragged girl of ten, a grey collector's cap blowing off her head, standing up and shouting across the whole mile of water at the top of her lungs:
