Chapter 363
The mile of black water between the Order's line and the allied fleet. Across it, most of the way already, slapping over the swell with a single grey sail cracking: a small grey cutter. Behind her, gaining, a long black Order pinnace with twelve oars a side and a brass bow-chaser cannon. And along the line, far behind both, guns flashing one after another, plumes of white water climbing round the cutter.
A grey hull with grey ledger-chains looped along her rails like bunting. Where a figurehead would be, a brass abacus bolted to the stem, its beads rattling. On her bow, in neat grey letters: COMPOUND. A fat grey book with a chain through its spine lashed to the thwart. And at the tiller, braced with both bare feet, a girl of ten, all elbows, in a coat sewn together from a hundred little stolen pockets, a bag of marbles on a string round her neck, a grey collector's cap three sizes too big crammed down over her ears.
The pinnace's bow-chaser firing: a ball skipping low across the swell, whap, whap, whap, straight at the cutter's stern.
on the Marka's rail, very still. A plain shirt, ten rings on ten fingers, platinum hair catching the last light. His eyes going pale gold, coin-gold, emerald-rimmed. One ringed hand lifting. And a little paper tag on a string flipping into the air over the fleeing cutter, close enough now to see the girl's face, swinging.
The skipping ball arriving and stopping a hand's breadth from the planks as if it had hit a wall, and dropping, hissing, into the sea. Over the stern, the tag, turning on its string, the number on it drawn so the reader can read it:
not lowering his hand. A muscle moving in his jaw. Behind him Flexsnus, leaning on the mast, going very quiet.
The pinnace still coming, a grapnel swinging up in a marine's fist. And on the pinnace's bow: blink. A silver-rose afterimage on the Marka's rail where a gull was. A gull, very surprised, on the Marka's rail. Rougeina on the pinnace's bow, barefoot, one blade flicking through the halyard.
The pinnace's sail dropping over its oarsmen like a sack over a cage of birds, oars tangling, the boat slewing broadside. Rougeina standing on the canvas over twenty struggling men, her blade not pointed at anyone.
Compound sweeping in alongside, ledger-chains rattling. The girl at the tiller hurling a line up the Marka's side without looking, and Levla catching it without looking either, as if they had done this a hundred times.
The girl scrambling up over the rail, all knees and elbows, dropping onto the planks and planting herself square in front of Levla, chin up, cap askew.

looking Levla up and down: the plain shirt, the bare forearms, no coat of a hundred currencies, nothing in his pockets.
leaning in between them, delighted.
The Memory Market under its glass roof, jars on every stall. A small ragged girl sliding a jar off a shelf under a sign that reads SOLD, running down an alley with it, and pressing it into the hands of an old woman on a doorstep, who opens it and starts to cry. And on a balcony above the market, a young man in a long coat of a hundred currencies, leaning on the rail, watching. Not calling the Ränta. Not moving at all.
back in the present, looking at her.
eyes gold. Between the man and the girl, a thread: thin, old, gold, a little frayed at both ends, one of only two threads on Levla that old. The other runs across the deck to a lanky man leaning on the mast with a tin in his hand.
pulling the bag of marbles off over her head and slapping it into Levla's palm.
crouching to the girl's height, his patchwork coat brushing the deck.
dropping the fat grey book onto the deck at Levla's feet. THUD. A chain through its spine. On the cover, stamped in grey: THE ORDER'S LAST FLEET · ACCOUNT.
Levla on one knee on the Marka's deck with the grey ledger open across his thigh, his eyes blazing coin-gold, emerald-rimmed, a tiny price tag turning in each iris. And beyond him, the Order's whole line at dusk, horizon to horizon, as Levla sees it: every hull, every mast, every gun, every keg in every powder-room, every ball in every shot-locker hung with a glowing price tag on a string, a thousand thousand tags swinging over the water like a market at night. And on every keg of powder and every ball of shot, the same grey stamp: RÄNTA · ON CREDIT.
Only the Great Chain across the Gate carries a different tag: PAID IN FULL · THE COUNCIL'S LAST TREASURY. And on the two black-and-silver ships with their rows of grey figures: no tags at all. Nothing there that anyone ever paid for.
a clerk's tidy grey hand: HULLS: LEASED. POWDER: 9,412 KEGS. SHOT: 61,000. COLLATERAL: EVERY KEG OF POWDER AND EVERY SHOT IN THE LINE. DUE: AT THE CONVERGENCE.
looking up from the page. Very slowly.
A lantern on an upturned barrel. Round it: both crews, the troll jarl squatting like a boulder, Njord leaning in from Young Pike with Sill signing at his elbow, Torva on her coil of rope. Krydog in the middle, looking deeply uncomfortable.
cracking his knuckles, green lightning flickering.
his third eye opening, a thin crimson line lifting off it into the air, drawn straight down the silver road toward the distant Gate.
(Every head turns, slowly, up to the Marka's yard, where a small figure in a white scarf is perched with her knees under her chin.)
on the yard, the crimson line from shoulder to fingertip beginning to glow, a grin spreading.

closing the ledger on his finger.
flat on his back at the edge of the lantern-light, one eye open, his crow on his chest.
later, alone on the Upp Igen's bowsprit beside the scarred fist, knees drawn up, looking down the silver road at the dark trunk. Perne on the rail below her, switching her eyepatch to the other eye, Fjärran at her shoulder.
through the scope, past the Gate, a mile on, the open eye bleeding one crimson tear: the Road's End. White cork-foam churning under a falling cork-river. A great root arching into it like a jetty. The smashed Order warship on the roots. Nothing moving. Nobody there.
