Chapter 50

The Lucid
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, the ridge.

The Nightmares pour down the slope toward the crew like a black avalanche, snow spraying upward around them.

P2MID, the crew

drawing weapons.

VIGOLAS
Okay! Same as on the ship! Smurjan finds the knot, we hit the—
SMURJANthird eye open, scanning
There's no knot. Not here. Here they're not borrowed. Here they're home.

P3ACTION.

Rougeina Swaps toward the front of the stampede, aiming for a rock.

P4WIDE.

She lands somewhere else entirely: a narrow hallway lined with mirrors, her own face in every one of them slowly fading, far from the others. The ridge, the crew and the snow are gone.

ROUGEINA
…No. That's not where I—
P5CLOSE, a mirror.

Her reflection smiles at her a half-second late.

PAGE 3
P6BACK ON THE RIDGE. ACTION.

Vigolas swings green lightning at the stampede. The lightning comes out as snow: harmless, glittering, falling upward.

VIGOLAS
What?! WHAT?!
P7CLOSE, Trollmage

hands up, panicking.

TROLLMAGE
Dreams don't obey rules, they obey dreamers! This is Kompis's dream! It's doing what his sleep thinks lightning is!
P8CLOSE, Vigolas

shaking snow out of his fist.

VIGOLAS
He thinks my lightning is snow?!
TROLLMAGE
He thinks your lightning is pretty!
PAGE 4
P9ACTION.

Drekk swings his axe into the first Nightmare: solid hit. It works. He grins.

P10CLOSE, Drekk's hands

on the axe haft. They're going transparent, fading like breath on glass.

DREKK
…Why can I see the snow through my fingers?
P11CLOSE, Smurjan

grabbing his shoulder, shaking him.

SMURJAN
You're forgetting you're asleep! You think you're really here, and the dream is taking you! Remember the deck! Remember the dog!
P12CLOSE, Drekk

eyes squeezed shut, gasping.

DREKK
Deck. Dog. Deck. Dog. Marka snoring like a walrus.

His hands go solid again.

PAGES 5–6 — THE STAMPEDE
P13ACTION, a run of fast panels.

The Nightmares hit them.

Smurjan walks the Sightline through the front rank, one palm strike per Nightmare, precise and fast, but there are hundreds, and each one he drops rises again behind him.

Bakasura erupts from his shadow and bites a Nightmare in half. It tastes like a scream, and he spits it out, gagging. "…Worst… thing… I've… ever… eaten…"

Trollmage has waited for nothing and can cast nothing. He hits a Nightmare with his Codex, hard. It doesn't help.

Drekk swings, solid now, roaring, "DECK! DOG! DECK! DOG!"

P14WIDE.

The crew is pushed back to the edge of a frozen cliff. Below them, the river of black ice cracks with old voices. Nowhere left to go.

PAGE 7
P15CLOSE, Vigolas

back to the cliff, snow-lightning fizzling in his fists.

VIGOLAS
Anyone got an idea that isn't snow?!
P16A SOUND.

A small, clear ding, like a bell on a shop door.

P17WIDE.

A light comes down the ridge: one small warm lantern, swinging, carried by a figure walking calmly through the Nightmares, which part around her like water around a stone.

PAGE 8
P18FULL FIGURE.

VAKA. A girl of fifteen in an oversized nightshirt and big snow boots, a moth-eaten scarf wrapped three times around her neck, hair in two messy braids. She carries a battered iron lantern on a pole, its flame a steady, gentle gold. She looks exhausted, and amused.

P19CLOSE, Vaka

raising the lantern.

VAKA
You're new. You're doing it wrong. Hold still.
PAGE 9
P20ACTION.

She touches the lantern to Drekk's forehead. Light blooms in his eyes, gold, warm. He gasps.

DREKK
…I'm asleep. I'm asleep. I'm lying on my own deck with my hand on a dog.
P21CLOSE, Drekk

looking at his hands, solid and steady. He looks up at the stampede with new eyes. Then, slowly, he imagines: his axe grows, until it's the size of a ship's mast.

DREKK
…Oh, I like this.
PAGE 10
P22ACTION.

Vaka lights them one by one: Trollmage, Smurjan, Vigolas. Each one's eyes catch the gold.

VAKA
You know you're dreaming now. That's all lucid means. The dream can't fool you, so you can push back.
VAKA
Not much. Don't get cocky. It's still his dream.
P23CLOSE, Vigolas

lit, looking at his fists. He thinks hard. The snow on his knuckles crackles and turns green: lightning again. Weaker than in the waking world, but his.

VIGOLAS
Ha! There you are.
PAGES 11–12 — SPLASH
P24SPLASH (double page). THE LUCID.

Over the ridge behind Vaka, carrying lanterns of every shape and size, come the Lucid: dozens of dreamers from every corner of the realms, in nightclothes, night-caps, an old man in a bathrobe with a rolling pin, a soldier in long johns with a sabre, twin children on a sled, a troll in a nightgown swinging a bedpost. Every one of them has golden light in their eyes.

They hit the Nightmare stampede from the flank, lanterns blazing. Where the light falls, the Nightmares lose their shapes, flickering back into shadow.

At the front, Drekk swings an axe the size of a mast in a great arc, roaring. Vigolas rides behind the swing, green lightning on both fists. Smurjan walks the Sightline through the gap they open.

PAGE 13
P25WIDE.

The stampede breaks and scatters up the ridge into the upward snow. The Lucid cheer, sleepily. The troll in the nightgown yawns hugely.

P26MID, Vaka

lowering her lantern and leaning on its pole, suddenly very tired.

VAKA
They'll be back. They always come back. This is her country tonight.
PAGE 14
P27TWO-SHOT, Vigolas and Vaka.
VIGOLAS
You're asleep? Like, right now? In the real world?
VAKA
Eight years.
VIGOLAS
…How?
P28CLOSE, the lantern's flame.
VAKA
Every time I light someone, I sleep one more day. That's the price. The Lantern costs my mornings.
VAKA
I've lit three thousand people. I'll wake up when I'm old.
PAGE 15
P29CLOSE, Trollmage

horrified.

TROLLMAGE
Why would you do that?!
P30CLOSE, Vaka

shrugging, smiling a little.

VAKA
Because when I was six, I had a nightmare and nobody came.
VAKA
So I decided someone should.
P31CLOSE, Vigolas

looking at this tired kid with her lantern. He doesn't joke.

VIGOLAS
…Okay. You're my favourite person in here.
PAGE 16
P32CLOSE, Smurjan

third eye on the horizon.

SMURJAN
Where's our man?
VAKA
The Rider has him deepest down. Where the dream hurts most.
P33CLOSE, Vaka

pointing with the lantern.

VAKA
She always sits where it hurts. She likes the warmth.
PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P34WIDE, the horizon

under the vast sleeping golden flank of the sky-dog. Far away, a horse of shadow gallops across the sky, hooves striking sparks of frost from the clouds, toward a single lit cabin standing alone in the snow.

P35FINAL PANEL, close on Vigolas

watching it.

VIGOLAS
…And where's Rougeina?
