Chapter 145

The Hungry Book
PAGE 1
P1CLOSE, the Gluttony Codex

on the Library step, pages parted like a mouth, amber light dripping, aimed at the gold-bound book in Kompis's lap.

P2ACTION.

It lunges. The book launches off the step like a dog off a leash, pages snapping. Kompis throws himself sideways, clutching the Lust Codex to his chest. The amber maw clamps on empty air.

PAGE 2
P3WIDE.

The Gluttony Codex grows: pages multiplying, unfolding, a book the size of a door, then a cart, then a house, an amber maw of paper, teeth made of page-edges, hovering in the empty Library.

P4CLOSE, Trollmage

staring at his own book, horrified.

TROLLMAGE
…It's mine. It's my Codex. It's incomplete; it's been incomplete my whole life. Why's it awake?
SMURJAN
The Second Sign woke every book.
PAGES 3–4 — THE CLASH
P5ACTION, a run of fast panels.

The maw hunts the crew's Codices:

It lunges at Rougeina, at the rose script up her arm (Envy, written). She Swaps away and it bites a pedestal in half.

It swings toward Smurjan's crimson script-scars. Smurjan walks the Sightline at the book's spine, strikes, and the maw only flinches.

It snaps at Vigolas's chest, where the Greed Codex opened at Brygdar, emerald under his coat. He punches it in the pages, thwack, and it eats the lightning and grows bigger.

VIGOLAS
…It ate my punch!
P6CLOSE, Kali

from Smurjan's shadow, borrowing Trollmage's Gluttony for sixty seconds out of sheer instinct, and immediately regretting it, clutching her stomach.

KALI
Oh, that's awful. That's like being starving in every direction.
PAGE 5
P7CLOSE, Trollmage

watching his own book try to eat his friends. His hands are shaking.

TROLLMAGE
…It eats whatever's near. Stand close. That's the lock. And I've been standing close to all of you for years.
P8CLOSE, Kompis

cornered against a pedestal, the Lust Codex in both arms, the amber maw looming over him.

KOMPIS
…Trollmage? Any time now.
PAGE 6
P9CLOSE, Trollmage

closing his eyes. Thinking, as slowly and carefully as he's ever thought.

TROLLMAGEthinking
…Gluttony: take things into yourself. It wants to grow. It wants to eat.
TROLLMAGEthinking
I could feed it. Seventy books just flew past me. Feed it one, and I'd be stronger than anyone. The strongest troll who ever—
P10CLOSE, Trollmage

opening his eyes. Very calm.

TROLLMAGE
…No.
PAGE 7
P11ACTION.

Trollmage walks into the middle of the Library, right under the amber maw, and lies down, flat on his back on the stone floor, hands folded on his belly, the crown sliding off his head and clattering away.

P12CLOSE, Vigolas

staring.

VIGOLAS
Is he— is he taking a nap? Now?!
PAGE 8
P13CLOSE, Trollmage

on the floor, eyes half-closed, voice slow and gentle, talking to the book above him.

TROLLMAGE
Hey. You. Hungry one. Come here.
TROLLMAGE
I've got another book, you know. Sloth. Written into me all the way. You know what Sloth is? Stored potential. Waiting.
P14CLOSE, the amber maw

hesitating above him, pages twitching, confused.

PAGE 9
P15CLOSE, Trollmage.
TROLLMAGE
You can eat. Or you can wait. Wait with me. Lie here. Be hungry. Don't eat anything. Just… be hungry, and wait. And see what happens.
TROLLMAGE
I've been hungry and waiting my whole life. It's not so bad. You get used to it. You get strong from it.
P16CLOSE, the maw

sinking, slowly, lower and lower toward the troll on the floor.

PAGES 10–11 — SPLASH
P17SPLASH (double page). SLOTH AND GLUTTONY.

In the centre of the empty Library, under seventy bare pedestals, a big half-troll lies on his back on the stone with his hands folded, eyes closed, doing nothing. And settling down onto his chest, shrinking as it comes, from a house to a cart to a door to a book, the amber Gluttony Codex curls up on top of him like a cat, pages slowly closing, amber light dimming to a hungry, patient glow.

Up his left hand, the violet Sloth script glows. Under the amber book, the two lights meet, violet and amber, and hold. A hunger that has learned to wait.

TROLLMAGEbarely a whisper
…Good. Good book. Wait with me.
PAGE 12
P18WIDE, the Library.

Silence. The crew slowly lowers their weapons. Trollmage asleep on the floor, the Gluttony Codex asleep on his chest.

KALIvery quietly
…The lazy one tamed a hungry book by being lazy at it.
SMURJAN
Sloth is a virtue. Stored potential.
P19CLOSE, Kompis

letting out a long breath, sinking down against the pedestal, the Lust Codex still in his arms.

KOMPIS
…Okay. Okay. That was close.
PAGE 13
P20CLOSE, Kompis

opening the Lust Codex to check it. Gold pages, his own threads written in gold script. He turns them, one, two, three—

P21CLOSE, the book's spine.

A ragged edge. A page torn out. Right in the middle of the book, a strip of torn gold paper, and a few amber flecks on it, like crumbs.

PAGE 14
P22CLOSE, Kompis

very still.

KOMPIS
…It got one.
P23FLASHBACK, a single panel

the first lunge, when Kompis threw himself sideways. One page flapped open, and the amber maw's edge snipped it out, quick as a heron.

PAGE 15
P24CLOSE, Trollmage

waking just enough, seeing Kompis's face, seeing the torn edge. His face crumples.

TROLLMAGE
…Oh, no. Oh no, Kompis. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
KOMPIS
It's okay. It's— it's one page.
P25CLOSE, Trollmage

struggling up on one elbow, the book still on his chest.

TROLLMAGE
It's not okay. A Codex page eaten by Gluttony is gone. Not lost. Digested. Whatever was on that page, it's in my book now, and my book can't read it.
PAGE 16 — THE HOOK
P26CLOSE, the torn edge of the Lust Codex.

Kompis runs his thumb along it. On the page before the tear, the last line of gold script runs right to the edge and stops, mid-sentence:

THE SECOND TECHNIQUE OF LUST
when you hold two threads in one hand, you may—
P27FINAL PANEL, close on Kompis

looking at the sentence that ends at a torn edge, forever. Then at Trollmage, miserable on the floor. He puts the book down, crawls over, and puts a hand on the troll's shoulder.

KOMPISquietly
…Then I'll just have to find out the long way.
