Chapter 328
The black doorframe tall as a lighthouse, the grey pouring through it in a slow, patient flood, past Jorvand standing in the gap with his closed book. Below, the crews. Behind them across the river, the gold light of the Sun-Wolf's sun.
at the back of the crews, one eye shut, sighting along the black frame like a man sighting along a plank. Measuring it.
turning to Krydog, his hands shaking from every build since the Burn.
kneeling at the foot of the hill on the stone threshold of the empty stands: dry stone. Chalk out. His shaking hand on the rule.
hearing him. Looking up at the black doorframe. At the grey pouring through it. At the man standing in it.
a crooked grin. Cracking his neck. Starting up the hill.
Vigolas walking up the empty slope through the flood of grey, the grey pouring round him, not taking him: his name still glowing gold in it, faintly, because behind him two crews are already saying it.
KRYDOG, KOMPIS, ROUGEINA, DREKK, EVERYONE (low, steady, a roll-call): …Vigolas. Vigolas. Vigolas.
in the doorway, watching him climb. Not moving out of the way.
Vigolas stepping into it, beside Jorvand, shoulder to shoulder with the man who made him, the grey pouring past them both. And then turning, and planting his feet, facing into the door, into the nothing beyond it, arms spread, hands on the black frame on either side.
hitting a counted man standing in its doorway, and beading off him. Like water on wax. Pooling round his boots and going no further. The flood through the frame stopping. Banking up behind him like a river behind a stone.
his back to the realm, his face to the nothing, the grey pressing on him from inside the door, his arms shaking on the frame, his name glowing gold on him.
at the foot of the hill, goggles down, chalk flying. Drawing a door: full size on the stone, eleven metres, four across, every plank, every hinge, every nail-head, in long single strokes. The violet grid in his eyes. Numbers floating up off the lines.
The far hill of Thanatos under a grey sky. At its crest, a black doorframe tall as a lighthouse, and in it, arms spread, hands on both sides of the frame, a pirate in a long coat, standing in the Null's own door with his back to the realm of the dead and his face to nothing at all, the grey of the Null piled up against him inside the door like a sea against a breakwater, beading off him, going no further. His name glowing gold on him.
Beside him in the frame, a tall stooped man with a closed book, looking at him.
Below, at the foot of the hill, a wiry man on his knees on the stone, drawing a door the size of a building in chalk. Round him, two crews, saying one name over and over.
And far behind, across the river, in a pool of gold light, an old woman on a stump, writing.
in the frame, very close to him, speaking quietly under the roar of the grey.
looking down the hill at Jeppson drawing. At the chalk. Something almost like admiration on the half of his face that's still a person.
sweating, shaking, drawing the hinges. A line going a hair off. His hand stopping. The old freeze.
a breath. Not rubbing it out. Drawing on.
in the frame, his arms shaking harder, the gold of his name flickering as the voices behind him go hoarse. The grey pressing.
And across the water, on the near shore, out of the boats of the witnessed dead, out of the stands, voices joining: not loud, sleepy, the resting dead saying in their sleep the name of the man who called theirs. Thirty-one of them first.
hearing it. Over the grey. A merchant crew he burned, asleep in the boats of the dead, saying his name. His eyes filling.
(The gold on him blazes back.)
the last line. The chalk-line reel. His shaking thumb on the snap.
in the frame, letting go of the sides with both hands, turning, and putting one palm flat on the grey piled up in the doorway behind him. A doorway's worth. Within his measure.
The grey in the doorway gone: sent back through the frame to before it came, the gap inside the black bars clear for one heartbeat, nothing in it at all but the nothing beyond. And Rougeina's eyes on Vigolas from the foot of the hill: blink. She's in the doorway; he's at the bottom of the hill, falling on his back on the stone beside Jeppson.
snapping the line.
Rougeina blinking back out of the frame onto the slope, and a door rising out of the chalk on the stone, standing up like a pop-up book, pale as bone, violet ticks on every edge, eleven metres of planks and iron hinges, swinging up the hill and into the black frame, and shutting.
A black doorframe tall as a lighthouse, and in it, a door: pale chalkwork, a hair off true at one hinge, shut. The grey behind it, on the other side, pressing, not coming through. Not one wisp.
on his back on the stone, chalk-dust everywhere, his hands locked, shaking, looking up at his door. Tears running into his goggles.
standing on the hillside beside the shut door, his hand on the chalk. Feeling it. Looking at the hinge that's a hair off.
getting up off the stone, bloody, grinning, walking up to Jorvand. Holding out his hand. His wrist with Aska's black handprint on it. His palm open.
looking at the hand. A long, long time. His own hand lifting, the half of it that's still flesh, an inch. Stopping.
opening his book, turning to a blank page, and drawing a single black bar across himself: his plate, his name, his outline. Fading, gently, into the white of a margin.
The far hill: the shut chalk door in the black frame, the crews round it, battered, alive. Vigolas's hand still held out to nobody. And beyond them, down the far side of the hill, the far shore of Thanatos: the empty stands, the empty boats on the bank, the hillside drawn in outline.
Where half a realm of the gentle dead rested yesterday. Not grey. Not dark. Not a ruin.
Nothing.
(A blank panel, its borders drawn, nothing inside.)
