Chapter 329
The near shore: the slow grey river, the boats of the witnessed dead asleep in it, soft light over each one like a blanket. The far shore: a hill with a shut chalk door in a black frame at its crest, and beyond it, nothing. Between, two ships floated off the shallows and moored to an old stone jetty, lashed together still.
on the near bank, lowering its colossal head to the Marka's deck, and opening its jaws: the sun inside shrinking, a ball of light, a lamp, a coal, a small ember in a curl of smoke, dropped gently into Vigolas's open palm.
The golden wolf shrinking in a long fall of gold light, smaller and smaller, until it's a golden retriever, wet, standing on the Marka's deck, shaking himself all over everybody.
trotting straight to Kompis and lying down across his feet with an enormous groan, as if he'd had a long walk. Kompis on his knees, both arms round the dog's neck, face buried in wet fur.
(Mingus licks his ear. Very thoroughly.)
Both crews sitting where they dropped. Nobody talking much. Bandages going round. Svala's burns. Kali's arm in a sling. Jeppson's hands still locked, Roffe feeding him stew off a spoon. The refugees from the uncharted islands, crowded in the Upp Igen's waist, staring at the grey river.
at the wheel, doing the head-count: by sound and weight, every soul on deck in one beat. Eyes shut. Lips moving.
(For the first time in the series, the count comes up right.)
sitting on the Marka's deck with his back against the mast, beside Vigolas. Both of them battered past standing. Krydog's head drooping. Jerking up. Drooping.
settling, finally, onto Vigolas's shoulder. His eyes closing. Asleep. Snoring almost at once, a sound like a ship's timbers.
not moving a muscle, a sleeping rival on his shoulder, looking at the Up-Again crew across the lashings, who are all staring.
organising, in whispers, a watch over their sleeping captain: Perne up the mast, Daniel at the rail, Roffe with a blanket, Jeppson (hands locked) sitting guard with his elbows out, Flexsnus leaning on nothing beside them.
Rougeina sitting alone at the very end of it, her boots over the grey water, looking across the river at the far shore. At the hill. At the stands she can't see from here, where eight seats are empty.
where there was nothing a moment ago: a stump. And on it, already seated, knees together, a book closed on her lap: Fenna. Not looking at Rougeina. Looking at the same far shore.
(Neither of them says anything for a long time.)
not turning.
her jaw tight, her eyes wet, saying them under her breath, the way she will every day now.
Thanatos at nightfall, drawn wide. On the near side of the river, the witnessed dead asleep in their boats under soft light, hundreds, a quiet harbour of resting souls. In the middle, two ships lashed together at a stone jetty: on one deck a captain asleep on a pirate's shoulder and a whole crew keeping silent watch; on the other a boy asleep with a goat across his feet. At the end of the jetty, a woman with short crimson hair and an old woman on a stump, side by side, looking the same way.
And across the river, on the far hill, a shut chalk door in a black frame, a hair off true at one hinge, holding. And beyond it, half a world of nothing: drawn as blank page, the borders of the realm running into white.
opening her book on her knees, turning a page, and on it, in the margin, very small, writing one word in her exact hand.
(We don't see the word.)
glancing sideways at last. And Fenna gone: the stump empty, then not even the stump. A little moss where it stood.
on the Marka's deck, reading her arms by lamplight. A hundred and eleven names. Every one still there, ink dark. She touches them one by one.
Krydog still asleep on his shoulder, Aska's ember warm in his free hand. Looking down at the grey river. At thirty-one boats in a ragged line near the jetty, asleep under soft light.
(In one boat, a ship's boy of fourteen smiles in his sleep.)
sitting up against the rail with Mingus, eyes gold, looking out across the river at the far shore. Seeing no threads there at all. Not cut. Not ended. None.
(Mingus puts his chin on Kompis's knee and doesn't answer. Dogs don't count. They just know.)
beside them, ten dull rings, looking at the same nothing.
The watch round the sleeping captain. Flexsnus leaning against the rail beside Levla's shoulder (they've drifted together), flicking open his tin by habit. Reading the lid by lamplight.
Nine ruled lines, seven scratched. Most struck through. Two still open:
MOUTH, 1 NOTCH. DUE: ?
NULL, 1 NOTCH. DUE: ?
A tiny emerald notch-icon.
the first line changing under his eyes, the pin-scratches rearranging themselves by no hand:
MOUTH, 1 NOTCH. DUE: SOON.
leaning, looking out over the dark river toward the way they came in: the Witness Wood, the Deep, and far beyond it, past the fixed star, the Mouth where he bent the world one notch so two ships could go through side by side.
on the Marka, lifting his head off Kompis's knee. Ears forward. Very still. Looking down: at the deck, at the water, at the ground under the river.
on the Marka's rail, Roffe's, untouched. Its surface trembling. Tiny rings spreading across it.
the soft light on the sleeping boats flickering, the whole slow surface of it shivering, as if something very, very large, very far down, had moved.
(No SFX yet.)
on Vigolas's shoulder, waking up in one jolt, eyes wide, an hour exactly.
The realm of Thanatos, the river, the jetty, two ships, a door on a hill. And from under all of it, under the water, under the hills, under the realm, under the world, a sound, drawn as a single long crack across the whole panel, like the grain of an enormous tree splitting:
