Chapter 216
The ceiling of decrees falling: slabs tipping free one after another, each carved with a name, FJELLHEIM, KRÅKBERG, a hundred villages, coming down like gravestones. The grey spreading from the window. The crew backed against the hidden door.
looking up at a thousand falling writs, then at his own open hands.
both palms up toward the falling ceiling, green lightning crawling up his arms.
The whole falling ceiling of a thousand decrees folding: slab into slab, name into name, the stone and the falling dust and the weight of five hundred years of signatures folding in on itself, smaller and smaller, into a single grey cube the size of a fist, which drops into Vigolas's waiting hands with a dull, heavy thunk.
staggering under the weight of the little cube, and his face going blank for one moment. Searching for something.
(He can't remember. The size rule: beyond his measure, another, smaller memory.)
shrugging it off, stuffing the grey cube into one of the thirty-six pockets of his coat beside the others.
Silence. Kompis, Isa, Trollmage, Smurjan and Mingus round the bench where Vider sits. And a tremor: the sand-gold rim-stone shuddering under them, as if something far away in the world had just been let off a chain.
(Empty SFX box. It's the Silence.)
A crack racing along it, through the stone, under the bench. The whole ledge Vider sits on tilting, slowly, toward the endless dark of the Second Void.
grabbing for Vider's huge sleeve, signing frantically to the others.
on the tilting bench, not moving, not reaching, not making a sound. His great hands folded. Still waiting. Still feeling for her through the Knot. He won't let go of that, even to save himself.
in the Silence, at the very edge of the tilting ledge. He looks at the great hooded giant who scratched his ears. At Kompis, sliding. At Isa, Trollmage, Smurjan, all on the stone that's falling.
And his tail stops wagging.
Warm. Brown. And gold coming up behind them like dawn.
(In the Silence, even the thrum is silent.)
At the edge of the world, in total silence, beneath the tilting rim of sand-gold stone: a golden cave-bear the size of a hill, a coat of shaggy, blazing gold, rising up out of the dark of the Second Void and setting his enormous shoulders under the ledge. He takes the weight of the whole rim, the bench, the ring of ten violet slots, the seated mountain in his hood, and the four small people clinging to the stone, on his back, and holds it up. Level. Steady.
His warm brown eyes, the dog's eyes, looking up at Vider.
And Vider's great grey hand, very slowly, reaching down to rest on the golden head.
sprawled on the leveled ledge, staring down at the bear holding up the edge of the world, tears in his eyes, signing to nobody in particular:
on the bear's head, and his other hand signing, slowly, to Mingus:
The Vault, ceiling gone, open now to a dark shaft rising into the mountain. The grey spreading across the floor from the open window, waist-high at the far end. And Solvig, standing inside it at the window, grey in the grey, the leash gone from her hand, looking out at nothing. Three paces from Rougeina. Three paces of grey.
at the grey's edge, the eight letters of her name still circling her like moths, her hair half grey, her blades steel-grey.
taking the first step into the grey. On foot. No Swap; there's nothing in it to swap with. Her boot greying the moment it lands.
grey, soft, and then, as her name is shouted behind her, holding. Not uncounted. Not yet. Called.
(Inset, small: Kompis at the rim, feeling it through the Knot, his hand tightening on Vider's.)
second step. The grey to her knees. Colour draining up her legs, up her coat. The circling letters closing in on her, almost landing.
hearing that from him, and almost laughing, half grey, in the middle of the Null.
at the window, turning her head to watch the woman walking toward her through the grey, and her grey eyes blinking, twice.
very quietly. For a moment she looks less like an Architect and more like someone very old and very tired.
one pace from Solvig, grey to the waist, blades up. The eighth letter, A, landing on her hand and hanging there.
hearing her own full name said aloud, whole, in someone's mouth, for the first time in centuries. Her lips part.
rising. Eight steel-grey edges. One heartbeat from Solvig's throat.
A golden thread pulled taut, all the way across the world, from a black room deep in a mountain to the rim of the Second Void. Every inch of it humming at once.
at the rim, gasping, his hand on Vider's, feeling it, both ends, and signing one word with his free hand, as hard as he can:
unfolding from his lap for the last time in a thousand years.
And Vider stands. Rising from the bench for the first time in a thousand years, up and up, taller than anyone imagined, a hooded mountain unfolding at the edge of the world, the golden cave-bear holding the ledge beneath him, the crew small at his feet.
Beside him, the ring of ten slots, all ten blazing violet.
rising to the edge of his hood.
The hood falling back. And inside it, still only shadow, deep as a well, no face, no eyes, nothing to see. But for the first time in a thousand years, the shadow opens, like a mouth about to speak.
(The Silence, for one heartbeat, holding its breath.)
