SCALELIST UNIVERSE

Chapter 129

The Routing Study
PAGE 1
P1WIDE, the top of the Marhold Spine at dusk.

A small, ordinary wooden door set into the white stone of an Architect's tower, a brass knocker, warm light under it. The kettle inside is still whistling.

P2MID, the crew at the top of the stairs.

Rougeina in front, pale, steady. Behind her, filling the stair-street below, Couriers rising up from every terrace, satchels open, a hundred of them.

VIGOLAS
Go. We'll hold the stairs.
ROUGEINA
…It's my mother.
KOMPIS
We know. Go. We'll feel it if you need us.
PAGE 2
P3CLOSE, Rougeina's hand

on the brass knocker. She doesn't knock. She pushes, and the door is unlocked.

P4WIDE, THE ROUTING STUDY.

The only seat of power in the whole Order kept like a home: a warm, low, book-lined room, every wall stacked with shelves of handwritten notes in tidy bundles tied with string. A fire crackling. A worn armchair. A kettle whistling on a hob. Three scarves hanging on a hook by the door. It smells of tea and old paper.

P5FULL FIGURE, EDVAR

rising from the armchair to take the kettle off the hob. Slender, calm, neat. Silver hair, round spectacles, a grey robe cut like a suit, three scarves wound round his neck anyway, fingerless gloves. In his hand, a chipped teacup, steaming. He shivers, faintly, all the time.

EDVAR · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Seven, Keeper of Routing

P6CLOSE, Edvar

pouring a second cup, pleasant.

EDVAR
Ah. You came. Sit, please. Milk? I'm told it's polite to offer.
PAGE 4
P7CLOSE, Rougeina

standing, blades on her back, not moving.

ROUGEINA
You know who I am.
EDVAR
I know your name. Rougeina, of Astralis. Daughter of a soldier-woman. Pride and Envy, assigned at four. (He sips.) That's what I always know. Names.
P8CLOSE, Edvar

sitting back down, cradling the cup in both gloved hands for warmth.

EDVAR
I have routed millions of souls. I have never met one.
PAGE 5 — CUT: THE STAIRS
P9ACTION.

Outside, the Couriers attack: a blizzard of red-wax slips flying up the stair-street. Vigolas punches them out of the air. Smurjan's Triple Pulse. Kompis's Four-Gun Volley, Fru Gnista bursting fireworks that burn slips by the dozen. The troll-crow catches slips in his teeth and spits them out, delighted.

P10CLOSE, the crow-Trollmage

on Kompis's shoulder, screaming directions.

THE CROWTROLLMAGE
LEFT! Slip on the LEFT! I'm a very useful bird!
PAGE 6 — THE STUDY
P11CLOSE, Rougeina

finally sitting, on the very edge of a chair across from him, tea untouched.

ROUGEINA
My mother. You routed her.
EDVAR
I expect I did. Most people, really. Let me look.
P12ACTION.

Edvar gets up and runs his gloved finger along a shelf of tied bundles, humming, the way a librarian looks for a book. He pulls one out and unties the string.

PAGE 7
P13CLOSE, the routing note

in Edvar's own neat, kind, rounded handwriting, a teacup ring in one corner:

Soldier, female, Astralis. — ROUTED BY ORDER OF ARCHITECT THREE. — Deliver to: available body, Gate City surf, aged (78). — Sealed. E.S.

No face. No description. Just a name, an order and a destination.

P14CLOSE, Rougeina

reading it. Her hands begin to shake.

ROUGEINA
…"Available body." "Aged." She was thirty-one. She died within a year in a body that couldn't breathe properly.
PAGE 8
P15CLOSE, Edvar

mild, genuinely puzzled.

EDVAR
Was it a bad body? I'm sorry. I don't see them, you understand. I write a name, and the slip does the rest.
EDVAR
If I'd seen her, I'd have chosen better. I'm quite good at choosing. I just never see.
P16CLOSE, Rougeina.
ROUGEINA
…You never once looked.
PAGES 9–10 — SPLASH
P17SPLASH (double page). THE STUDY.

The warm, cosy, book-lined room, firelight on a thousand tied bundles of routing notes. Every bundle is a life sent somewhere. Millions of them, floor to ceiling, shelf after shelf, the ceiling itself lined with them. In the middle of it all, a slender, shivering man in three scarves holding a teacup in both hands, and across from him on the edge of a chair, a barefoot assassin holding her mother's routing note.

Out of the shadows of the shelves, faint, the reader sees a thousand faint figures: everyone those notes delivered, standing in the dark between the books, faces turned to the man who never looked at one of them.

PAGE 11
P18CLOSE, Edvar

shivering harder, wrapping a scarf tighter.

EDVAR
You'll forgive the cold. Every routing costs me a body's worth of warmth. Millions of them. I haven't been warm in… (he thinks) …I don't remember.
EDVAR
I keep this room like a home. It doesn't help.
P19CLOSE, Rougeina

standing slowly, setting the note down on the tea-table.

ROUGEINA
Why did you invite me?
PAGE 12
P20CLOSE, Edvar

very honestly.

EDVAR
Because you're crossing Architects off a list, and the Return is broken at the edges. I've grown cold enough to be curious.
EDVAR
And because I have a slip with your name on it. It's been on my desk since the Third Chair went dark. I thought it rude to send it without tea.
PAGE 13 — CUT: THE STAIRS
P21ACTION.

A slip gets past Vigolas's fist and hits Smurjan and Vigolas together. Two ribbons of light cross. For a page, Vigolas is in Smurjan's tall grey body with three shadows, and Smurjan is in Vigolas's clinking coat.

VIGOLASIN SMURJAN
WHY DO I HAVE THREE SHADOWS?!
SMURJANIN VIGOLAS
…This body is very loud.
P22ACTION.

A second stray slip hits them again, and by pure luck they swap back.

VIGOLAS
…Never again. Never again.
PAGE 14 — THE STUDY
P23CLOSE, Edvar

rising, crossing to a little writing desk under the window. A quill. A slip of paper. A stick of red wax warming over a candle.

EDVAR
You understand, I don't do this out of malice. It's tidy. You're very untidy, Rougeina. You make people disappear. That throws my ledgers off terribly.
P24CLOSE, Rougeina

blades drawing slowly.

ROUGEINA
What are you writing?
PAGE 15
P25CLOSE, Edvar's quill

writing in that neat, kind hand:

Rougeina of Astralis — deliver to: the body of the soldier-woman, as it was in its last year.

P26CLOSE, Rougeina

reading it upside-down across the desk. Her mother's body. Old, failing, dying, a year left. To be poured into it the way her mother was.

ROUGEINAa whisper
…You'd put me in her.
PAGE 16
P27CLOSE, Edvar

mild.

EDVAR
It seemed fitting. You'd understand her better. And it's a body with a very short future, which tidies things up.
P28CLOSE, Rougeina's knuckles

white on her blade-hilts. Her heart, ba……dum, heavy. Behind her eyes, five stones.

PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P29CLOSE, the red wax

dripping onto the folded slip.

P30FINAL PANEL, close on Edvar's gloved thumb

pressing his seal into the soft red wax: a small neat E.S. The slip is sealed. He looks up at her through his round spectacles, pleasant, cold, and holds it between two fingers like a card.

EDVAR
More tea before you go?
